Doctor Who: The Timeless Children (2020)
An appalling end to a terrible season
This final episode was just a total mess. Overly long drawn out talking segments which added little but destroy the Canon of the series developed over 60 years. Poor continuity and writing and at times cringe worthy acting.
Some SFX were good but some also very poor i.e. The Cyber-Timelords looked cheap. Throughout the series Jodie Whitaker has looked either bored or lost, which again is down to poor writing and direction. Also the music this series (and in this two-parter in particular) has been at times intrusive and has even drowned out dialogue which in a series as complex as Doctor Who has become, is unwelcome.
A problem which as been in evidence since Chris Chibnall has taken the helm is the ever-increasing supporting cast, many of who I could care less about due to the lack of character development.
As has been the case for a while now, even during the Peter Capaldi years Doctor Who has suffered from a problem of creating an ever increasing number of questions but never truly answers them or the answer is somewhat anti-climatic with no payoff as was the case here. The problem with this is that there is always a risk of going against canon something which Star Trek has struggled with in Enterprise and especially Discovery.
A chance to kill off some characters was missed and indeed it seems new characters have been added. At a time of forecast cuts at the BBC the future of the series must be in doubt. Having watched all episodes since the 2005 reboot and many earlier episodes, the Chibnall era has been by far the poorest in terms of writing, story, entertainment and characters. This needs to change quickly or Doctor Who's future looks bleak.
Doctor Who (2005)
Doctor Who Series 12
Have been a fan of Doctor Who since the reboot in 2005. Christopher Ecclestone, David Tennant and Matt Smith were excellent Doctors with superb stories and excellent supporting cast. Things started to go downhill with Peter Capaldi but it was still watchable. Since Jodie Whittaker took over in 2018 almost every episode has been preaching moral issues and social (in)justice, which is all well and good but it makes for very boring entertainment which is what the show is supposed to be. The show also suffers from very poor character development. The Doctor now has three assistants, none of which adds anything of value to the show as no investment of backstory has been put into them. Also, the stories are so hideously complex it is difficult to understand what is supposed to be going on (the actors don't seem to either). Too much is crammed into 50 minutes to grasp what is happening.
The main problem however is that Whittaker seems uninterested in the stories that she is acting in, she may be a good actress but she is not good in this, as her version of the Doctor is so dull although this could be due to the poor writing and direction.
Doctor Who needs to change quickly or it risks damaging the legacy it has built up over the years.
King Gary (2018)
30 minutes of my life I won't get back
One of the worst 'comedies' I have ever seen. Nothing was even remotely funny or entertaining. How this was ever commissioned as a series is anyone's guess. Total waste of the licence fee. Bring back Del Boy, Victor Meldrew and Edmund Blackadder. It. Is. Rubbish.
