The Undeclared War (2022)
Exceptional
Hannah Khalique-Brown is truly exceptional in this. Perfectly cast and just interesting. Absorbing too. Surely only sociopathic trolls wouldn't enjoy this.
The Kardashians (2022)
Fresh as a daisy & full of life
I loved every episode, finding it fresh and alive. Inspirational and aspirational, but above all human - it lit up my life. I can't wait for more episodes, from a lovely family who actually make things happen.
Madres paralelas (2021)
Best Actress, Best Film
...no matter what the juries decide. Absolutely beautifully filmed in a way that loves the actors and caresses their performances. Interesting story too. Penelope Cruz delivers her finest work here, in a nuanced and relatable performance that's the best of this year or any other - truly great.
My vagueness is intentional, just watch it!
Belfast (2021)
Masterpiece - Best Picture
A medley of memorable moments. A true celebration of life. This is definitely the Best Picture. Branagh's flawless masterpiece is a feast for the eyes and heart.
A real must-see.
Spencer (2021)
Absorbing, highly recommend
This film is about being in one's mind. Everything else is incidental. That's why this film and the greatly nuanced performance from Kristen Stewart are so intense, and not understood by everyone.
The reviews are like chalk and cheese with this. If you take things too literally in life you'll hate it and appreciate a Marvel movie more. If you think less literally then you'll love it.
I recommend you take a look at this, and ponder the great mind of the protagonist which was as beautiful, thoughtful and tormented as the rest of us.
Mandy (2019)
Instant classic, majestic comedy
Each of Diane Morgan's creations of 'Mandy' are 15 minutes of absolute bliss.
Reach out metaphorically and you'll discover a multi-dimensional titular character that's so easy to ride along with in the genius and unexpected stories she inhabits.
The supporting characters, especially Michelle Greenidge as Lola, and cameos are universally sublime and compliment the show perfectly.
Utterly absorbing, razor-sharp and instantly memorable - I couldn't recommend it enough.
BAFTA and Emmy voters please do take a look, have many laughs like the rest of us - and above all give our master creator, Diane Morgan, and her superb show the awards they truly deserve.
No Time to Die (2021)
Best Actor Academy Award for Mr Craig please.
I loved every aspect of this film. The story was absorbing, action scenes exciting, script perfect, acting exceptional (without exception), filming, producing, costuming sensational and the loveliest score and bond song to accompany this important, final, chapter for Daniel Craig, and the series. What's not to like here.
As 007, Mr Craig has an unparalleled stature in the role, having worked to bring us the James Bond for our times. He layers the role while giving just the right amount of panache. Being from the same home town he's also a true inspiration for actors and dreamers like myself. I hope the Academy give him the appropriate recognition. I can't think of a more deserving and exciting win.
Physical (2021)
Honest
I've never seen more honest character portrayals in any other movie or TV show. Ever. All are multifaceted and truly reflective of reality in the sense of the beauty and the beast in each of us. Something we don't always want to admit. How this ever got made is a miracle but it'll restore your faith miracles happen. Roll on season 2!
Nomadland (2020)
A beautiful masterpiece
This film is so important to me. I think it has universal themes that will resonate with most people on the planet just now. The story is Fern's, and ours. Every frame, every word, every sound, every direction - every heartbeat - is so meticulously done. Frances McDormand's third Best Actress Academy Award was so well deserved I cried - just one more to go... A subtle epic, this really is a masterpiece of our time and perhaps the most deserving Best Picture Oscar winner of all time.
Superstore (2015)
Universally Fabulous
So so sad. Just watched the final ever episode of 'Superstore'... I cried.
Best ending ever for THE best sitcom ever. Better than 'Friends', 'Cheers', 'Frasier' and even 'Not Going Out'. It was timely and each character was relatable and meant something. It mattered more to me than 'Parasite' or 'Nomadland', and I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who thinks that.
Out on a high I know but I'll always miss it - it got me through three lockdowns here in the UK, a sign of its universal appeal.
The Dig (2021)
Exceptional
A real gem of a film, I hope won't go under the radar. The acting is flawless without exception and the story for me was unexpectedly fascinating and universal. Themes of love, loss and how fleeting life is are about as important as you can get. The sign of a truly great film.
Finding Alice (2021)
Keeley's finest hour...
Keeley Hawes' finest hour, and she's had several in her time. Very watchable in this. Becoming a national asset (beyond treasure). It even has Joanna Lumley in it for goodness sake so what more convincing do you need to watch it? From some of the reviews I think some folks aren't getting the humour. If I was them I wouldn't admit that. Life's too short to be so literal, and such a troll. So figured I'd post a positive review. Richly deserved I think.
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
Underrated gem
The critics of this are the lefty types cocooned in their own belief this memoir subverts to stereotype. How wrong, patronising, out of touch and deluded they are. Ron Howard's film is expertly put together with rich characters brought to life by actors at the top of their game. Well worth a look.
Ghost (1990)
A Classic
This film is known for the most deserved Oscar win in History, for Whoopi Goldberg. Everything works about this film, just watch and watch over. It's the best.
The Split (2018)
Important series, very special
The BAFTA (and SAG, Golden Globe, Oscar) - worthy, and Olivier Award-Winner, Nicola Walker plays Hannah Stern intelligently, humanly. The second series develops all the characters without exception expertly and interestingly, and the stories are all absorbing. Shout-outs to Barry Atsma, Stephen Mangan, Annabel Scholey, Fiona Button and Deborah Findlay - who are all superb in their lead roles. Donna Air is also a revelation. This is an important drama about everything it means to be human nowadays. Very special indeed.
The English Patient (1996)
A Rare Masterpiece
The late, great, Anthony Minghella's masterpiece is a beautiful collaboration of some of the greatest filmmakers of all time. The screenplay is exquisite, an intimate epic telling of a nurse caring for 'The English Patient' at the end of WWII, who learns of the tragic romance earlier. The filming and music is unforgettable. All the actors own their roles, the Oscar-Winning Juliette Binoche as Hana is standout and the Nominated Kristin Scott Thomas as Katherine has never been better. A nine-time Oscar-winner worth every second of your time, and should be appreciated as the truly rare gem it is. I've never seen a film like it, before or since.
Big Business (1988)
Hidden gem
Never saw this before! Can't believe it.
Anything with Bette Midler milking a cow whilst singing is an instant classic.
Sit back, let yourself go and enjoy the ride.
Fabulous:)
Keeping Faith (2017)
Captivating
This an engrossing series that had me hooked.
Eve Myles' tour de force performance transcends greatness and is truly captivating. This comes in part from her, and the audience, having the time to get to know each other - a result of expert direction and film making. Eve deserves a BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe for her work in this. The rest of the cast are also universally great.
I hope this gets seen, because it truly deserves to be.
