It was a neat idea
30 September 2020
It was a cool idea to have a collection of folklore/horror stories from different countries made by and in those countries, but dear god, the execution on the majority of these short films is awful. For about 2/3s of these stories, the plot and acting is so poorly done that they're almost hard to watch. I wouldn't call it a complete waste of time, but don't go into it with any higher expectations than an extremely low-budget student film.

One of the worst and most annoying movies I've ever seen
23 October 2019
I'm a huge horror fan, and as such I feel very strange that this movie is so revered and well-oiled, because, other than being one of the first slasher movies, I can't find anything remotely redeemable about this film. The first half is so boring that I had to force myself to pay attention, and the second half is a noise filled, annoying mess.

The only frightening part of this movie was when I realized I still had another shrieking, Benny Hill chasing 30 minutes left. I'm still in shock over just how bad this movie was given the amount of praise there is for it.

In short: "AHHHHHHH!" *chainsaw revving* *slow jogging through the bushes* "AHHHHHHHHH!"

Primal (2010)
5/10
All the makings of a decent horror movie up until the very end
8 October 2019
In horror movie terms, Primal is nothing new or original. It follows a very predictable path of the whole "young people camping in the woods with a monster" story. The characters are fairly predictable, as is the ultimate ending.

What makes Primal stand out, though, is, aside from the Australian Outback setting, the monster itself. Sure, the general idea is pretty standard, but the actual character of the monster is one that, at least for me, is new and exciting. Definitely pulling from the name of the film, the monster is very animalistic in its movements and behavior, but what was most exciting is the bridge between man and beast that it creates. This is perhaps the most terrifying part of the entire movie; the hinting of ourselves from, relatively speaking, not that long ago.

Sadly, all of the tension, thrill, and the interest of our primal selves completely falls apart in the last twenty minutes or so, as it seems that the filmmakers blew their budget, in terms of both money and creativity, as we get a terrible and confusing climax full of horrible (especially by 2010 standards) CGI which hurls us through the wormhole (you'll see) to the expected, but not entirely bad, conclusion.

Oh, and one of the best, and most Aussie, ending lines to any movie.

Arrival (II) (2016)

In My Humble Opinion, One of the Best Sci-Fi Movies Ever Made
9 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Arrival is a beautifully made, intriguing, suspenseful, and intelligent film. It forgoes the worn-out, overused alien movie script of: Aliens arrive, humans contact aliens, aliens attack humans, humans fight back and win against overwhelmingly stupid odds that seems to come out every other year. Instead, the film asks the question of "What if extraterrestial life came to Earth NOT to mindlessly kill everything? What if, instead, they came for a mysteriously greater purpose that our two species must learn to communicate in order to understand?" And it is a question that makes for one constantly tense, suspenseful ride that leaves you uncertain until the very end. I do not understand the negative reviews claiming it to be boring. My only guess is that the people who find Arrival boring would prefer a Michael Bay CGI-explosion filled Independence Day remake; this time, with TRANSFORMERS! However, if you are a person who enjoys experiencing a great story, rather than watching a two hour action sequence, you should give Arrival a look.

Frankenfish (2004 TV Movie)
Typical syfy movie
28 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Frankenfish is probably one of syfy's worst movies to date.

There is absolutely no plot what so ever, except for the "mutant fish killing people" if that can be considered a plot. A man is found horribly mutilated, investigators are sent in, and are killed off one by one. Most within a 20 min time period. The filming is mostly in the dark and makes it hard to see everything, especially the few shots of the fish in the water, it looks mostly like a blob. Also, most of the main characters are killed randomly and very quickly in one or two scenes. The characters are very poorly developed as well. The fish themselves are never filmed for more than 5 seconds, due to the horrible special effects. Just another Syfy creature feature (I created a profile JUST to review this movie, if that tells you anything)
