On the Buses (1969)
A relic of a time long past
I've seen episode of this over the years. Never once have I laughed. Never once did I like any of the characters. Never once enjoyed watching this. And I genuinely believe that the people who DO only do so because it reminds them of when they were younger when this was on one of the only three channels we had here.
This is one of those shows that, if I NEVER saw it again, life would be better due to never having to be put through the cringe factor it induces.
Star Trek: Prodigy: A Moral Star, Part 1 (2022)
A kids show? Nah! An AWESOME show.
Prodigy keeps getting better and better every episode. What makes it so good for me is that the characters are genuinely likeable and that each episode has one or more of those "moments" that makes me grin from ear to ear. This started in the pilot with funny little bits like Dal's faces when he's trying to communicate with Zero and Zero's having none of it. When the Protostar first powers up and takes to the air accompanied by some of the finest music in the Star Trek Universe. In this most recent episode it's the part where Dal has to make his decision, and there's a working together montage, and when they set of for their mission to Tars Lamora.
So many things about this show, it's characters, stories and sounds have me hooked. And I'm a 43 year old!! And this is supposed to be a kids show?! Nah, like I said, this is just an AWESOME show.
I'll take all of it, thank you.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Six - The Vanquishers (2021)
Does anybody else know what's going on
So, the purple dude and his blue lady friend end up getting disintegrated by someone we know not who, with no explanation of who THEY were in the first place. There were three doctors just because. That serpent fella got put on an asteroid and that's that. And the big end of the universe cataclysm.....got put in space jail.
I'm really sorry. I'm not one of those ranters, but this was absolutely abysmal. Oh, and just to try and get our interest back up, the somebody at the end that NOBODY knows who it was went and mentioned a "master". My days, I'll be glad when all this is over and maybe, just maybe we can get back to some semblance of coherent and entertaining stories.
Star Trek: Prodigy (2021)
Fully Grown Adult's Subjective Opinion About a Kid's Show
Per the review title, my thoughts on this show that's aimed at a younger audience are these:
I think it's great for the kids. There are lessons to be learned from it. The first two episodes, as Kate Mulgrew expounded, are about perseverance. The third is about asking for help when you need to. I haven't seen the fourth yet as it's not out here in the U. K. yet. But any show that helps kids learn about this sorta stuff, through the lens of Star Trek, has gotta be a winner, right?
The animation style is attractive and enjoyable. I watched the first two episodes enthralled by the visuals that even though I'd read what was going to happen in the episode before I watched it, I found I was enjoying it so much I was caught in the moment and forgot about what was coming, so that when stuff did happen I still enjoyed it.
The characters are all likeable. Some I like more than others, but don't get me wrong.... I do like them all.
The USS Protostar.....very noice. The first of the more recent Star Trek ships I've imagined how much fun it would be to have a go in it. Looking forward to learning more about it, and it's holographic helper.
Three episodes in and I've gotta say, I'm liking it.
Feel free to not like or dislike this opinion, cos that's all it is. I'm not qualified to recommend or not recommend this. These are just my rambling thoughts on a kids cartoon I enjoyed and feel has a place in the Star Trek Universe.
National Geographic Explorer: Big Sur-Wild California (2010)
Vapid
Very pretty documentary on the surface, but I can't think of anything that can be said that can be more damning to a "documentary" than
"I learnt nothing because it taught nothing."
Be warned, this is no Attenborough.
The Orville (2017)
Just can't be what it wants to be.
This sort of thing has been done before, and far, FAR better than this. Remember Galaxy Quest? Surely one of the best Star Trek films ever made (😏). You can see this is what MacFarlane et al were aiming for, but have missed the mark rather severely. Galaxy Quest made self deprecating humour of having the tittilating character of Gwen DiMarco in it only to draw in the young male audience. Orville does this also in several of its female characters, but there is no self deprecation involved here. A shallow attempt to draw in a certain demographic is painfully obvious.
The humour also falls far from the marks eliciting only subtle giggles instead of the intended guffaws. The ship itself if far from aesthetically pleasing. The score and title music sounds like a fan made it with very little thought. And the overall intention to make this series is less than honourable. Seth MacFarlane was in the running to be a showrunner for the new Star Trek televisual universe But was told no. So he's made this in a clear attempt to flip the bird at CBS. A rather futile attempt at getting "one up". And it's failed. This show is derivative at best, and has no real character in the way so many other shows have.
Leave Star Trek to Star Trek, Seth. Some people may not recognise it right now, but this show proves you've NEVER recognised it for what it was.
