The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018)
Ridiculous fun - laughed more than we thought we would
Clearly, the people who did not like this movie do not have well-developed senses of humor. Kate McKinnon is as intensely funny here as she is on SNL and Mila Kunis did good playing the straight (wo)man or foil to the wacky Kate. We loved their friendship and how they supported each other through thick and thin, silliness and danger.
There are not many action comedy films with female-centric stories, so if critics are comparing this to male action buddy movies, they are already biased about what is or is not funny based on male stereotypes. This film pokes fun at those male behavioral cliches and also shows the female BFF perspective. We were laughing way more than we thought we would - be open and check it out for yourself - cheers!
The Musketeers (2014)
Fun & Well Done...wish they did more seasons
As usual, British productions are beautifully costumed, the locations and sets are incredible with much attention to detail and authenticity, and the acting is excellent. Although we wished the network had not canceled the series, we were glad to see all three seasons. Thanks for a job well-done!
47 Ronin (2013)
Amazingly good - Don't listen to critics
The critics don't know jack. We loved this film from the gorgeous cinematography and CGI to the incredible detail in the sets, costumes, swords and traditional armor. Keanu Reeves' strong performance captured the essence of being an outcast in the rigid social structure of feudal Japan. The best Japanese actors did a brilliant job and bring authenticity to this beautiful and tragic story. Hiroyuki Sanada was a stand-out in his ability to portray pathos and stoic determination.
Most western critics seem to be ignorant of Japanese culture, in general, and pan this film because it's not to their taste - to them it's too slow, too melancholy, not bloody enough, and they don't like the revenge for honor motif. If they had actually seen any old Japanese Samurai films, they would know and understand that this movie references the timeless black and white films directed by Akira Kurozawa and others of his era. These contemporary critics are viewing this film with modern eyes and the attention spans of gnats who are used to fast action and blood-spurting gore. Obviously they don't "get it."
Forget the critics - 47 Ronin is worth seeing!
A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
For Romantics Only
A Walk In The Clouds is a lovely and unabashedly romantic film with gorgeous cinematography and a strong cast. Keanu Reeves is authentic as the orphan soldier who tries to help the beautiful daughter of a well-established Spanish family that owns a vineyard and winery in Northern California.
Aitana Sanchez-Gijon plays Victoria with heart and sensitivity, and she and Keanu seem like a couple from the moment they meet. Anthony Quinn, who plays her grandfather steals every scene he's in with his charming performance. Keanu and Anthony have great chemistry together, and look like they could be related since they are similar in their height and build, their noses and even their face shapes!
Although it came out in 1995, it holds up visually, since it takes place after WWII. The production values, sets, costumes, and hairstyles are appropriate for the time period.
I heartily recommend this for all die-hard romantics!
And lastly - Roger Ebert liked it, 'nuff said!
Dil Bole Hadippa! (2009)
Funny & Heartwarming!
I'm constantly amazed at how negative and hostile some reviewers are when a film is happy and lighthearted. It's as if these angry, miserable people can't stand seeing other people have fun.
Dil Bole Hadippa is one of my favorite Bollywood films precisely because it doesn't take itself seriously. While Rohan, played by Shahid Kapoor, was a bit melodramatic as the hunky cricket captain, I think it was a perfect "straightman" act for a zany comedy.
Meanwhile, Rani Mukherjee (Veera/Veer) was hilarious and brilliant as the tiny yet talented all-rounder bats(wo)man with big dreams. She did a wonderful job dancing and singing both as a man in the "Lions of Punjab" number, and as a beautiful woman in the other songs.
One of the other reviewers compared this film to She's The Man, and although the theme is similar, the Indian version has its own unique charms. So what if it's been done before? How many times do we keep seeing new versions of Pride and Prejudice or some other "classic" story?
This film tackled some important themes such as giving women a chance to fulfill their dreams even when it hasn't previously been a traditional role. Another significant theme is how your dedication to, and faith in the Divine can manifest in realizing your dreams. And lastly, the most important theme of love - for family, for one's heritage, and for your true love makes Dil Bole Hadippa a film worth watching again and again. Hadippa!
