(A)sexual (2011)
interesting
I stumbled upon this by accident, but was instantly intrigued. Not being asexual myself, and not knowing anyone who identifies as such, I hardly knew anything about the subject beforehand, I was mainly looking to better understand what asexuality is about. Surprisingly, I found a lot of the discussion around how we think about non-sexual relationships not just interesting, but also relevant to me personally.
Overall, this documentary is everything it needs to be. It brings up several views on asexuality, and also talks about the general lack of knowledge about what is actually a fairly large group of people (I think the documentary said 1 %). I recommend this to anyone who has even the slightest interest.
Kyss mig (2011)
Uneven
I just saw this yesterday, and was left with mixed emotions. The film has some qualities, but it doesn't really follow through. As others have pointed out, the film follows a very simple love story, and there's nothing wrong with that as long as it's well-executed, but this wasn't. Throughout the film I never really cared about the relationship, mostly because it wasn't developed enough to be interesting, but it I also didn't find the characters to be likable. Most of the screen time with the two leads is them either staring at each other or having sex, most of which doesn't further the story what so ever.
It's all very Swedish-film-y, if you wanted to you could probably make a drinking game out of every time a character breaks a long tense silence with -Du..?, and you are constantly reminded of the upper-middle-class-ness of the characters. Another thing that bothered me is that EVERY SINGLE ONE the characters smoke. It's not that I think it's bad, there's just no point of it, it doesn't bring anything to the movie and it isn't really realistic either. The most memorable scene for me is when they see deer in the woods, but I actually think the film would be better without it. It doesn't fit, it just looks as if they've taken left-over footage from a LOKA commercial and put it in for effect.
Basically, it's OK, but not more. The acting is uneven and the entire movie becomes nauseatingly predictable and over-emotional towards the second half. If you're only going to see one Swedish film with lesbians 'fucking åmål' is far superior.
Cashback (2006)
I want my cash back.. Unfunny, unoriginal and just plain bad.
I'm sorry to say that this movie sucked. The characters motivations are either shallow or unconvincing and the unfunny jokes are made worse by horrible timing. The acting isn't great, and the dialouge is often just weird, but the worst thing about Cashback is the lack of originality. The whole movie relies far too heavily on alternating slow-motion sequences with fast-forwarding to illustrate the main characters insomnia, which, by the way, is thoroughly unconvincing. While that could've been OK if they at least were the first to do it, it sadly seems that all of the potentially interesting aspects of the plot and aesthetics of this movie are copied.
If someone made a movie with footage from Go!, Fight Club and Art School Confidential, and edited it into a love-story completely devoid of chemistry, with no redeeming features, this would be it.
And don't buy into the crap about "breathtaking beauty" either; some of the scenes look OK, but nothing spectacular. Do yourselves a favor and watch something worthwhile instead. Or if you're here for the nudity, watch porn.
