Ma vie en rose (1997)
fantastic!
My Life in Pink is a french drama of a 7 year old boy named Ludovic who wishes to be a girl, henceforth decides to dress and act like one, but his actions begin to slowly anger the citizens of the conservative neighborhood they live in, and the problems begin.
A film that takes a rarely touched upon subject and treats it with care and gravity. Filming it in such a way that you are experiencing the events through the eyes of Ludovic, you grow a care for the child, because he is so innocent and sincere that you can't help but feel bad or angry at the people berating and punishing him all throughout the story.
Ludovic's parents had a difficult role as they try to control and take away something that is slowly but surely beginning to affect their normal lives as well. Their acting is just fantastic, and they were written very well, and while the film revolves around Ludovic, the stars of the film are his parents IMO. Props to Michèle Laroque and Jean- Philippe Écoffey.
With a well executed drama, the film also has very subtle symbolism on religion and social norms that i feel should be noted, as it gives an extra sense of value to the film, especially since the filmmakers didn't make the symbolism obvious and in your face.
The only thing i can say i didn't like was the ending, while the whole scene felt mostly metaphorical, and it's possible i missed something, i can't help but feel it was forced and poorly handled to have a happy ending. but that is only one small part of an otherwise good drama.
If you enjoy, heartfelt, social dramas i feel you may enjoy the film.
Man of Steel (2013)
AMAZING visual effects, action and situations. But with the shittiest drama I've seen in a modern superhero film.
Watch Superman find his purpose and battle the determined Zod from destroying the people of earth and take over the world!
Story: Follows every plot line well, everything is explained, and you never feel lost. But for a film that tries to tell the story of superman in a serious drama/action film, it FAILS in the drama department. Characters are not developed properly, Moral questions are answered and fixed with one sentence, or ignored completely, any point drama happens, action interrupts it, almost like the writer was afraid people would get bored. And the action (especially the climax) completely forgets everything Superman stands for in order to give a big visual spectacle. But what about the people he's trying to protect? millions are dying because of him, aren't you going to feel bad? aren't the people going to feel pain?
nop, all of that is ignored, but the fight was awesome wasn't it!!??
David S Goyer did a horrible job. with what he did here, i don't think he even touched the Dark Knight script.
Acting: The acting in the film is great, they all do a great job with the little that is given to them. I think everyone represented their characters to perfection, and they felt like a great embodiment of the characters we know form so long ago. With the little they gave them
Tecnical Aspects The Music is EPIC, but generic. So generic it is quite forgettable. The Visuals are GREAT everything looks big fantastic, epic! The cgi people did a great job. Zack Snyder did an amazing job with the visuals and carrying this whole film. When it comes to a good direction, i can count in Zack Snyder.
OVERALL OPINION: I had a lot of fun with this film. It was huge and exiting to see Superman battle something only superman can destroy. Not having any kryptonite was the best thing to happen to this film, because, it is what made this film AWESOME in terms of action. It was truly epic! but it is only epic if you turn off your brain, once you turn it on, the film is just a brainless action film that ignores superman and everyone around him as legitimate characters and sees them as just cardboard cutouts doing things.
It's pretty and exiting but where is the heart? Why do i feel like i'm watching a sequel instead of the first film? are you selling me a toy, or a film? Why do i have to turn off my brain to enjoy a modern superhero film, Iron Man, Spiderman, and Batman didn't make me do that, so why does Man of Steel have to do it?
Evil Dead (2013)
How all remakes should be done.
One of those great remakes that are just as good as the original but without copying it. Instead, It gives it's own flavor and color but always remembers it is still Evil Dead.
This is the movie where TASTES will decide whether the movie is better or worse than the original.
The FILM as a whole, is just fantastic. As a horror film it does everything it's supposed to have. Great dark scenery, great pacing, really cool violence (this includes death scenes and other moments where blood is shed)
And as a REMAKE it does everything right.
Why do you want to see a remake that does EVERYTHING scene by scene like the original???? To see better special effects??? the original effects where fine!! if you are going to make a film that was already made, then you BETTER bring something new to the table.
But you ALWAYS got to stay true to the original. You CANNOT bring something new without respecting the original, and i believe this film did that.
All the beats form the original where there, but they gave it their own twist. all the moments where there, but with their own flavor.
It was like Watching Evil Dead all over again, but as a COMPLETELY NEW EXPERIENCE.
Think of it like this. What if somebody else did Evil Dead instead of Sam Raimi?
That is this film, and THAT is why i think all remakes should be that way. It's a what if scenario, have all the familiar queues but have something new happen.
Totally recommend it
Maruja (1959)
Great film, worth a watch.
The Story of this town and the strong effect of Maruja, a woman who is so beautiful everybody wants to be with her. But this, which has been a reality of the town for a long time, is shaken when the Mayors son comes back from France. What occurs next is for you the viewer to find out.
I think this was a great film. The writing is fantastic, the acting is great, the music is very good, and the story flows very naturally and never becomes boring.
there's a few editing cuts and audio cues that feel strange, but that's because of the year it was made, and the place it was made also, in which this is their first film Basically.
But if you like film, this is a good one to see. not only cause it's well made. because it is a gem of puertorrican filmmaking that is slowly being forgotten, and it really does not deserve to be.
Give it a watch
The Dead Inside (2011)
An odd, indie musical that kept my attention from beginning to end with it's likable characters, catchy songs and interesting plot.
Wes (Dustin Fasching) and Fi (Sarah Lassez) are artist, One a photographer the other a writer. They have lost their muse and feel stuck, but they support each other in their troubles. But something strange is happening to Fi, something "otherworldly" that might destroy what they have.
This movie was pretty good, the story was completely told in Wes and Fi's apartment, and some extra stuff was in a fictional house where Fi's story takes place. Cinematography was pretty good, taking moments to experiment with it which have it's hit's and misses, but with every strange looking scene there is a fantastic looking one.
The acting of both Dustin Fasching and Sarah Lassez was very good as well as their singing, which is important because they are the only actors in the whole movie. They are both very likable and you want them to do well and solve their dilemma.
The story is interesting, mostly cause it takes different directions every time something occurs. It is a musical drama, with a supernatural flavor. The drama is touching and it develops very well. The dark moments are also pretty cool and can be suspenseful, maybe not all the time, but they work well to set the mood.
the only real issues are the dialog, and the placement of songs. The script works well, but there are moments in which the dialog sounds too cheesy, blatant or just sounds unnatural (some of those lines appear in the trailer). and the song placement can sometimes feel a little out of nowhere, this doesn't happen all the time, because sometimes they feel fine. But i feel the timing of them is a bit off.
And it needed like 1 or 2 more songs because nearing the end it kind of forgets it's a musical and does like a normal supernatural drama, and that was a mistake. If you're gonna be a musical, don't let there be no music for too long, it's got to be consistent the whole way through.
But aside from that i liked all the songs, they were catchy, and helped develop both the story and the characters almost perfectly. And while there are not a lot of BIG moments they did incredibly well with what they had and i'd recommend it if you like musicals or creative ideas put into a film regardless if it works perfectly or not.
It might be a little odd but you should give it a shot at least, i don't think you'll loose anything from doing so you might find more than you though.
The Hunger Games (2012)
So much Potential, so many possibilities, shrank down to an average film.
First of all, i never read the books, I wanted to let you know that before I continue.
The beginning was very good, it set up the situation of the characters and the status of society. Their struggles and their thoughts, it was all very well built. The big city was interesting and full of themes of Artificiality, commercialism, control, fascism etc. it was all very compelling.
But the more time passes the more the movie starts falling apart. You start to feel like this preparation is taking a little too long, And when we reach the Games themselves, it is, underwhelming. It comes a point where even the games themselves seem to drag. And by the time the movie ends, all those emotional queues and situations where, somewhat thrilling cause the characters are very likable, but it's not as strong as the movie intended it to be. Almost everything about this movie's theme or message is just not as strong as it would've been.
As i see this movie i see all the possibilities of strong emotional moments, and a deep message about society and it's current state, morality and the human condition. But the movie completely underplays all of these things. They exist, but they don't use them, they don't take advantage of this and use it to the betterment of the film as a whole. It feels like they took away many character and situations, moments that would've given much needed layers to the film. And i feel it was because they were afraid to challenge it's viewers, afraid to make the audience question themselves or the characters in the movie.
here are the main reasons i believe they ruined this movie.
1. How come nobody says their opinion on this society? there is obviously some disdain towards them but, why not say some criticism or something to give the viewer a thought, an idea on why it's bad. We can think it's bad, but i'm sure they can have something relatively compelling to say about it, even if it's only 1 or 10 words, anything to give the audience something more to think about.
2. Who are these competitors? what are their fears or their aspirations? Why is it so easy for them to kill each other? why are they working together? this movie never takes time to give the other competitors any humanity. I am sure they have families and a loved one or hell, maybe not, but why not show that to us?
I know showing them die might be too R rated, but at least give them some humanity, make these peoples death truly matter. By not giving them a personality, they just become normal villains to the protagonist, making us be happy they killed another human being forced into this just like they have. Don't you think that would give some much needed dramatic strength to the film?
3. WHO IS RUE (Amandla Stemblerg)!!!! there is a very important scene that comes from the death of this girl (not a spoiler cause you know only one survives), and it's very dramatically intense and does something very important for the rest of the film, and hell for the series itself. Yet WHY is she so important? The movie didn't give any time us to know this girl. Why did it create that issue on her home district? these games have been going on for 73 or so years, what makes THIS specific moment important!? This also applies to the lack of development for the competitors i mentioned before, but this is it's own special category because she was meant to be important and yet she was just a very nice girl...and that's it.
4. If you have nothing to show, move to the next person! This movie is concentrated on Katniss the whole time, but this is a big issue when the games start. because, i wouldn't have minded, if she DID anything. By the end of the film, it doesn't feel like she went through a big change in her life, she killed one or 2 people, but it was because of self defense, aside from that she just hides and runs and does some things, but because she doesn't have to go through big issues, why not concentrate on Peeta, or to anybody else competing?
Peeta had a more compelling time there because he had an alliance, he had to help hunt down these other people and he specifically said before it all started that he didn't want to be changed, he didn't want to kill anybody. There is a strong dilemma here and it was ignored to concentrate on Katniss getting hurt, why is this more important?
5. NO RISKS!! this movie ignores everything about the plot. it doesn't take advantage of the drama of the morality involved in murdering each other, it doesn't explore the emotions characters go through, the doubts, the stress. it doesn't pay attention to nobody, everything is taken so artificially, they took away everything that would've made this movie worth watching.
The only really good thing from this is that it made me want to read the book, because i feel like the book is gonna do a much better job at telling a story with a message and true drama better than this film ever will.
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
A Road trip dramedy that is funny, charming, sad and very, very well done.
A dysfunctional family (Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Paul Dano, Alan Arkin) take a ride from Albuquerque to California to take Olive (Abigail Breslin) to a beauty pageant she has been excited to participate in. In the trip they will go through some hardships, mostly personal to each person, and in the trip they learn a little something about themselves, family and life itself.
Little Miss Sunshine was a very well done movie. No time was wasted, and every scene was important in some way. It develops it's characters and story in a smooth pace without anything feeling too forceful or out of place. Sure there are strange moments, but it works well because the family itself is strange.
The characters are all interesting, and fun to be with. The acting is very good, everybody looking natural and feeling very real. My favorite character being The heroin using grandfather played by Alan Arkin mostly cause he made me laugh so much.
The only real issue that i think people might find is that by the end of the film, whatever problems they might have had or gotten into during the trip, whether they are personal or physical ones are still there. There is no resolution to many things and the end of the film might feel like it doesn't have a proper ending.
I mention this was the only thing stopping me from giving it a 10 out of 10, but as i thought about it i realized that the movie never meant to resolve these issues. that is not the goal of the film. This movie was more about the trip than the destination. It was about finding happiness or comfort in the small things, and pushing forward even when things seem bad. And that even if pushing forward doesn't fix or resolve the problem, it doesn't matter, because you learn by experiencing, enjoying the small things on the way and just moving on, not giving up.
