Inside No. 9: Sardines (2014)
Tales of the Unexpected rivived
I'd never heard of this series, untill someone told me: if you like Black Mirror, you'll love this series!
So I gave it a try and the very first episode was just brilliant. The great acting, really good camera work and the Roald Dahl-esk twist made it a true piece of art.
It made me think of Tales of the Unexpected, the series from the 70's, which is also really good.
It brings very high hopes for the other episodes, especially since a lot of people seem to rate this one lower than average.
If you've been living under a rock like I did and missed all seasons up till now, go ahead and watch it!
Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
When the best parts of the movie....
...Are the post credit scenes, it's a bad movie.
I'm not really into comics or superhero flicks (I know who spiderman, batman and superman are, but that's about it). Didn't like the whole Marvel universe, but decided to give DC a chance and watched Shazam! (Heard good things about it).
I liked it, so I had to watch this sequel and basicly it was all that makes me not like superhero movies: a story that doesn't make any sense, with way too much crammed in to make it believable or even fully understandable, with WAY too much CGI and unlikable characters. Especially the character of Freddy was so annoying I really didn't care if he would make the end of the movie.
Most of the humor didn't really land either. Some jokes worked, but most just fell flat or felt forced.
Like I said, the best parts of the movie are the post credit scenes.
I have seen only two other movies from the DCEU and basicly it's 2-2. Didn't like this and Black Adam, very much liked the first Shazam and The Suicide Squad. I'm on the fence if I should watch more of it.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
A fun 2 hours
Let me begin with saying I have never played D&D, so I don't know how true to the game it is. I do however read a lot of fantasy novels, so I have a basic understanding of races, places and (some) creatures. I feel that players do get a lot of nice Easter eggs, but it was enjoyable for a non-gamer too. I was happy that the flick doesn't explained everything to death, but gave the viewer just enough to understand what is happening without stretching it out and bore the audience to death.
The only criticism I have was that the Druid character felt a bit 1 dimensional. She didn't have any outstanding characteristics besides "I'm a shapeshifter". The other characters were a bit more well-rounded.
All in all I had a very fun time watching it and I would go see a sequel, may that ever come to be. I hope it does well and that sequel will become reality.
Wednesday (2022)
Fun, but predictable
To start with the good: Jenna Ortega was born for this role! She absolutely kills it as the dark, emotionless character amidst very colorful people. The lighting, music, decors and camerawork are also top notch. Gwendolyn Christie was great the principle too, as was the girl who played Enid.
Then the bad: it was so freaking predictable! Love-interest turns out to be the bad guy, who would have thought? (Eye roll) Oh, and the werewolf who can't werewolf, suddenly does werewolf when it's most convenient.
And Christina Riccie's character just had to be behind it all, as otherwise there was no reason for this character to exist. Speaking of characters that have no reason to exist: What was the deal with the whole Bianca-is-the-nemesis plot line? Or for Bianca's mother? Start a line that might be interesting, just to abandon it an episode later.
I wasn't too thrilled about some of the casting choices either. Catherine Zeta-Jones still is a beautiful woman, but a bit roo old to play Morticia imho. And the guy that played Uncle Fester? Playing him is already giving him too much credit. He didn't act, he just read his lines.
I realize I sound a bit negative, but all in all it's a fun watch, but nothing special. It had more similarities to The Order than to the Adams Family (although this is WAY better than the Order).
Oh, and is there any reason her parents didn't send Wednesday to Nevermore right away, seeing how much they loved the place?
D.B. Cooper: Where Are You?! (2022)
No insights whatsoever
What I knew about D. B. Cooper before watching this documentary: He was a guy who jumped out of a plane with a load of cash and has never been found.
What I know about D. B. Cooper after watching this documentary: He was a guy who jumped out of a plane with a load of cash and has never been found.
It gives no new insights whatsoever and was a complete waste of time. I love a good con man story, but this was just too bad.
American Crime Story (2016)
Season 3
I just stumbled upon season 3 of this series, so I can't say anything about the first 2 seasons (other than I will definitely go watch them). I'm also not American and knew just a little bit about the whole Clinton affair. I can't say if this is what really happened, or if the makers are too kind too either side. I just know I absolutely loved the series and binged it in 2 days.
Sarah Paulson absolutely NAILS the part of Linda Tripp, and I liked the other actors too. Almost everyone I recognized was playing some role very different than that where I knew them from, which gave it a fresh look. The production value is very high, and it just wanted to make me watch just 1 more episode.
Brand New Cherry Flavor: Tadpole Smoothie (2021)
4 episodes in....
... and I still don't have a clue what I'm watching, but I like it! The over all atmosphere is great and everything feels fresh and original.
The acting is great too!
Brand New Cherry Flavor: I Exist (2021)
Weird
So, this was one of the weirdest hours of television I ever watched. But as weird as it was, it was equally enticing. It certainly won't be for everyone, but it was interesting enough to want to see how the story will evolve.
The I-Land (2019)
Not thát bad
So, in spite of all the negative reviews, I decided to watch this show anyway. And I'm glad I did! Sure, the acting isn't that great (especially the actor who played Mason was really bad) and there are some plot-holes and things that don't make sense, but overall it's a decent show.
Don't overthink it and just enjoy the ride. It's a fun couple of hours and nowhere as bad as some of the other Netflix originals, like White Lines (talking about bad acting and unsympathetic characters, jeez).
I don't think there will be a second season, but if there is, I'll be watching it.
NOS4A2 (2019)
Soulless
I really wanted to like this, but I got to S1E3 and I just couldn't handle any more. Every scene just drags on and on, as there just isn't any soul in it. The acting is so-so and the story is non-existent. The pilot wasn't good at all, but at least it set up a nice premise. Too bad nothing at all is done with it in thefollowing episodes.
I want the wonder of young Vic discovering the Shorter Way;
I want the horror of teen Vic visiting Sleigh House;
I want the childlike wonder and admiration Bing has to Manx;
I want the downspiraling of Vic in her twenties/thirties;
I want a good Horror story with a likeable (but imperfect) protoganist and a scary antagonist.
I do NOT want another angsty teen drama with bad writing and even worse acting. I really wanted this to be good, as the source material is so great. But it's just bad in every way.
Nailed It! (2018)
Great idea, but the hostess ruins it
The idea of the show is great: make ordinary people try to recreate cakes made by professionals. It's not only fun to watch the contestants steuggle, but it does show how good the pro's are that make it look so easy in other programs.
But despite the great idea, I couldn't watch more than one episode. The hostess of the show completely ruins it. I guess they went for "sassy", but she's just an annoying, screaming blob that shouldn't be allowed on TV at all. She's just way too much over the top and she's too full of herself.
I will skip the other 4 seasons of episodes. Please remake this with a normal person as a host. Thanks.
I Am Not Okay with This (2020)
Life Is Strange
Okay, I'm only two episodes in, but I just had to come here to say I'm impressed. The acting is natural, Sidney and Stanley well cast and the whole thing has a kind of Life Is Strange-feel to it. It might be the music, or the similar plot of a highschool girl finding out she's more than you see on first glance. I did have plans for this evening, but I'll be watching the whole season instead. And I'll be checking out the comic when I'm done.
9 stars for now, it might go up or down, depending on the rest of the season
It Chapter Two (2019)
Meh
IT chapter 2 isn't a very good movie, but itisn't terrible either. I am a big fan of both the book and the mini-series, so I may have gone in a bit biased. But where I really liked chapter 1, I just didn't feel it for chapter 2.
The acting is great, but somehow I wasn't invested in any of the characters. They were just that: characters.
I was pleasantly surprised the movie opened with the Adrian Melon scene. This scene is one that makes the story of IT (and many other stories of mr. King) so great: besides the obvious evil of Pennywise, there are also "real" threats, like homophobic villagers.
I was very disappointed in the fact the storyline of Beverly's husband was completely cut, and the storyline of Henry Bowers was butchered. The fact that the Losers weren't only fighting Pennywise, but also had to dodge attacks from real people (so more rational fears if you will) was what made the book and the mini-series better than this flick.
All in all, it was an "okay" movie. Not great, not terrible, just "meh".
The Sinner (2017)
Season 2 was good, 1 amazing
For some reason Netflix decided to show me season 2 first. I thought I started a new series and only after 2 episodes I realized it wasn't the first season I was watching. The story of Julian was intriguing, but didn't exactly had me on the edge of my seat. Each episode trew up new questions, but it lacked some firm of urgency. Stil a very decent show, so I continued to watch season 1.
And DAMN, this has all the suspence and urgency season 2 was lacking. It's 3 A.M. now and I just finished ep. 4. If I didn't have to go to work at 8, I would finish it in one sitting. Can't wait to watch the rest.
Long story short, season 2 was a 7, season 1 is a solid 10 these first 4 episodes. I recommend watching it in this reverse order like Netflix does, as like many shows, the second season isn't quite up there (although it's still good) , so you'll get a taste of the goodness, and get season 1 as the main course after.
Love, Death & Robots (2019)
Well, that was unexpected
Normally I'm not into anim or animated stuff or over violent content, but I saw an episode was just 12 minutes or so, so I gave it a go when I was a bit bored. And what a pleasant surprise it was! Because the episodes are so short, there is no filler at all and they just leave you wanting more after each story. From science fiction to comedy to thriller, it just keeps hopping genres, which is also what keeps it so fresh. I just which there were more episodes, absolutely brilliant!
No Escape Room (2018)
Makes no sense at all
So the car of a father and daughter breaks down in a small eery village. Very cliché, but okay. They decide to spend some time in an escape room, which is recommended by a waitress at the local diner. Upon arrival they are immediately subverted in the story, together with 3 others, because that's absolutely normal and they don't have to pay or anything.
The story is that there once lived an inventor who was into necromancy or something and they have to help 5 people who went lost in the house escape. That would be okay, if there would be anything during the movie that points back at that story, other than one line "the Inventor is back!"
What follows is a string of horror movie clichés, all of which have no tie to the story.
Who was the Inventor?
How come people get lost in the house?
Why are there time loops?
What was growling at Karen in the basement?
What was the meaning of the painting scene whit the chains?
Who or what killed Tyler?
What was the role of Betsy in all this?
Did the tea play any role in what the participants saw?
How did the diner (including the parking lot) become part of the haunted house?
If only a few of these questions would be answered in the end, the movie would be okay. I was waiting for the moment that would make me go: "Aha, that's why this and that happened!" But there's absolutely nothing explained or tied up, so we just leave with a whole bunch of loose ends.
All in all a waste of time.
