Crusoe (2008)
barely stays afloat
I really wanted to like this show, I really did. I willfully suspended disbelief that this show could be running aground during the shallow Pilot, but alas she didn't run hard on the wind, she kinda beached herself in order to prevent more damage to her crew and onlookers.
But no maties, I stuck with them, yes I did, I got myself on that island through episode 3 & 4.
What heck is this? McGyver meets Gilligans island? After all, the fancy gadgets and inventions are all made from shipwreck material mind you, coconut fibers and some moldy pieces from the Castaway set.
I expected to see a clam shell cell phone with all fancy gimmicky crap they had at their disposal, I mean this lad has limitless imagination and talent, but he can't get himself of the damn island nor manage invent a knack for a British accent?
This could have been a refreshingly gritty, somewhat desolate re-imagined RC story, one that brings the worlds of the native and the castaway together through struggles and painful lessons. Alas, Friday is very smart and wise guy, but here he has an Oxford degree in Literature and Philosophy too boot.
Here is hoping that the filming crew didn't eat the writers without an adequate ceremony.
The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
Entertaining Space Saga
IF you like this sort of space saga, TCOR has the potential to entertain. Characters, locations and some good villains make this a fairly complex story. If you liked the Riddick character in TCOR: Pitch Black, then chances are you will like him in this installment. For me the stage to be entertained was set with the Necromongers arrival on the planets they seek to overtake. It was such a huge, dark and out of this world approach, that it really set the background and powerfully introduced the evil in this story.
If you have never seen TCOR: PB or are not familiar with the story, you will undoubtedly be bit lost and confused. The movie is pure science FICTION, less science but big on the fiction part. It worked for me, as I was willing to let the movie entertain me. The movie knew what it wanted to be, and it pulled it off well.
The story is pretty solid, although it relies on some familiarity with the main character and presumes viewers to be in the mood for a dark and at times campy movie. Acting is on par with this type of movie, dialog is at times flippant, but well timed and adds some dimension, costumes and props are well conceived and round out the movie well. I wouldn't mind another big screen installment to follow this one.
This is a review of the *Uncut* version of the movie, which I recommend!
Æon Flux (2005)
Between the posing and the languid shots of beautiful people there is hint of a story.
This is not a bad movie; it is not a great one either.
Between the posing and the languid shots of beautiful people (that's what the future gets ya ;-), there is hint of a story. The action is choreographed, feels at times uninspired and sometimes leaves you wondering...now why did the heroine go this way? Also missing was the feline grace of the classic Aeon, especially when approaching an objective.
After seeing Charlize in Monster, I know for sure that she can pull off the amoral, defiant and independent spirit of the classic Aeon Flux. Somehow the directing and the posing softened the new Aeon character too much. Looks like Charlize was not given much range and appeared to be reigned in as to not overshadow her fellow actors.
Casting is good enough, costume design and effects are very acceptable while not outstanding. Dialog on par with the range this movie allows. The fight scenes are entertaining but sometimes a bit predictable.
Die hard fans of Aeon: don't expect much, die hard fans of Charlize: don't expect a great performance.
If you seek to be entertained and do not mind a bit fluff in your action, go see it. It is good enough for a matinée. Really * * * * * 1/2
