Ingrid Goes West (2017)
Plaza ruined this.
This started off strong for me, the story was interesting and the topic was very relevant (gave me Black Mirror vibes) but I could not get past Aubrey Plaza's acting. It's almost impossible to empathize or be affected by her character when you're too busy cringing at her acting. It's upsetting that someone else wasn't cast because this could have been a great movie. I'm convinced the high reviews who praise her acting come from people who love Aubrey Plaza as a person because she can only play herself. I watched the whole movie but halfway through I debated whether or not I wanted to finish it. Made me chuckle a few times and overall was entertaining.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Love it.
I don't understand all the negative reviews, after reading multiple of them it seems pretty clear that those reviewers did not watch more than a couple of episodes. I fully believe that if this was a show with a male lead that was written similarly, had an equally talented cast, and the same amount of action and CGI quality, it would have much better reviews.
The audience for this one may be a bit different from past Marvel shows, but I appreciate that. As a woman in my thirties who grew up with 0 female-lead superhero shows, I appreciate the way this show was written, cast and directed. Tatiana Maslany is funny, adorable, and real. Ginger Gonzaga is also incredible and always makes me wish I had a hilarious, sassy best friend.
I will admit, there have been a couple of episodes that have felt a little slow and sometimes the CGI is lacking (as another reviewer pointed out, this may be due to budget constraints.) But in my opinion, She-Hulk is entertaining, relatable, heartfelt, and pretty darn funny. I hope it keeps getting renewed and that we see more of Jennifer Walters in the MCU.
Cherry (2021)
Trying very hard.
Tom Holland was great. The stylistic choices were flashy and distracting with no real purpose. The plot felt messy and it was hard to care about the characters' relationships. Emily looks like she's 12, weird.
Yearly Departed (2020)
Some funny bits.
I laughed a few times throughout but absolutely hated the "audience" reactions. Sometimes they didn't even make sense, it felt like they recorded a bunch of them at once and edited them in randomly after each sentence spoken. Annoying!
The Movies That Made Us (2019)
Hard to watch.
The editing is chaotic at best. The narrator is annoying and constantly interrupts the interviews. There's so much going on that it's hard to even understand what's being said. It's repetitive and nonsequential at the same time. I really wanted to like it but it was terrible :(
