Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)
Brilliant
I can't remember the last time a movie made me laugh this much. Anyone that's ever interacted with Indian Americans, East Asian Americans, or potheads will absolutely love this movie. The story is hilarious in and of itself, and it's coupled with great acting. Just about every character in this movie makes you crack up. The stereotypes are spot on.
There's really not much else that I can say about this movie as there is nothing I'd want to change. It was just about perfect. I've been reading through the comments on this movie and noticed that a lot of them have been negative. Well, I think those people missed the point of the movie entirely. See it for yourself and I'm sure you'll want to buy it. 10/10.
Aetbaar (2004)
Thrilling but unrealistic
This movie does keep you watching. Unlike the typical bollywood movie, the story moves along rapidly in this one. So even though you can predict exactly what's coming next, while the traditional Hindi movie takes its sweet old time in getting there, this one gets right to the point.
The story was quite unrealistic. I don't mean the premise, as that in fact was a pretty good one. However, the way the story unfolded was quite far-fetched and worthy of a cheap horror novel. Amitabh Bachchan gave a strong performance as always but the rest of the cast can't act at all. Moreover, the characters of Ria and her mother were unintelligent to an extreme. Especially the mother... I know they wanted to established that Amitabh as the father was the head of the household, but having the mother's character be this useless is well, quite useless.
The only positive thing I can say about this movie was the looming dark feel it had to it. I haven't seen this in a Hindi movie since Aks and Sangharsh. This gloomy, evil, dark, helpless, "feel something in your stomach" shade is rarely seen in bollywood, and perhaps writers and directors need to explore it a little more. It works wonders in Hollywood, so why not bring it home? They bring everything else home don't they?
Perhaps I'm being too critical. Perhaps the movie was only meant to be as good as it ended up being. All in all, not worth it. 4.5/10
Khakee (2004)
A tale of two halves
Oh, so close! They should have had it. Going into the intermission, this was the most gripping thriller to come out of Bollywood in years. In fact, I didn't want to leave my seat as I was afraid I'm miss something when the movie would commence.
But alas, I wish I did. The movie was a perfect mountain of sorts, straight up and then straight down. In short, it was ruined.
There were some brilliant performances by the actors in this movie. Most notably, Akshay Kumar's performance was highly entertaining and added a comic element to the movie. Ajay Devgan played a convincing and worthy antagonist, while AB, Aish, and Tushar Kapoor did quite well.
The blame for this movie not being an incredible one goes to the writers. It was directed with a lot of style and the actors gave it their all. But the script didn't live up to its end of the bargain. Nevertheless, it's still worth watching. If only for the first half. 7/10.
King Arthur (2004)
Worth a watch, but could and should have been better
It almost seems as though the character of Arthur was left unfinished. The movie never seemed to take us all the way into any particular aspect of the Arthur it was trying to present. It leaves the audience asking itself, "So what was he in the end? Arthur the Roman? Arthur the Briton? Arthur the warrior? Arthur the humanitarian? Arthur the knight? Arthur the Christian? Arthur the romantic? Arthur the king?" Instead of providing answers to these questions, all the film seemed to do is make Arthur seem as benevolent as possible.
I thought having Guinevere be a politician of sorts was a nice touch. The knights of the round table are really what made the movie enjoyable though. I liked the individual personalities they all had as it made the movie feel more real.
This movie is worth watching. It's entertaining, captivating, and even funny at times. But again, this movie should have been better. The makers had a wonderful legend and characters to work with. They should have gone all the way with it. I can't help but compare this movie to Braveheart, and I find it doesn't even compare. 7/10
Hum Tum (2004)
Entertained hum, now it's tum's turn
A well executed production. Funny and entertaining throughout. The movie had a light-hearted feel to it and was stylistically superb. Saif Ali Khan's performance was excellent. I don't quite understand what's happened to him. It's like one morning he wakes up and all of a sudden he's amongst the top actors in Bollywood.
I'm not a big fan of songs in movies, but the songs in this one were amusing and fitting.
The movie did have some cheesy, tear-jerking moments... but it can be forgiven as there were plenty of hilarious moments to keep you entertained.
Go watch this movie. 10/10.
Hulk (2003)
Big green storm cloud
Good and bad.
The Hulk sure delivered what it promised. So if you're ready for another big budget, badly written, comic book adaptation... you'll love it. However, as a true fan of the cartoon... I must say that the movie's story itself was a huge disappointment.
Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, and Nick Nolte all gave stunning performances, and the CGI was incredible.
A 6/10 I'd say. If this movie was compressed and made much shorter at its beginning and its end... it's probably deserve an 8/10. However, the tedious story and terrible dialogue make it a real pain to sit through however. The only thing that'll save this one is the action sequences.
