Masters of the Air (2024)
Apple has few shows to boast about and this is right up there
Kinda exhilarating experience watching this squad go through all those emotions and still go for it again and again. Scary to some extent.
Stunning visuals. I was in awe for most the time when the squadron is up in the air. It looks so realistic and gripping.
The squad is just starting to band together and the directors have made a great effort to show the process.
Casting is spot on. Austin Butler reminds me of young nick cage. Naturally charismatic and heck yea he is a great actor. No more elvis vibes. Callum turners voice is apt for the role and Boyle shines in his own way. Kudos to you guys and can't wait for the remaining episodes.
Apple has finally nailed it. They got what they were looking for. An almost Masterpiece. Can't judge the entire season based on 2 episodes so I give it anywhere between 8-9 rating.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
If throwing random taste less worlds at you then surely you are a visionary with short sight!
Think of your own personal project. You dream about it all the time, work hard and pave a path for that single goal and when the final presentation comes where you gotta go through your slides and everything is wrong right from the font size to the slide titles and all the fancy things you put into the slides don't work on the day. That is exactly what happened here.
I can list a few things.
1. The casting is totally off. The lead actress did not suit for the role nor she is charismatic to pull this off. Her dialogue delivery just made me less interested. She randomly goes to a new world and tells them directly that she wants to fight mother world(What if they are spies?). Hey, her dialogue gets rebels to leave everything behind and fight for her. So who am I to say her delivery is bad?
2. The CGI is not really great at many places.
3. The action sequences are boring and on screen looked "TRY HARD".
4. Predictable villains and their villainy. Nothing new here.
5. Most of the movie carries a shade of grey. He ruined Super Man and he did in this again. I swear I hate grey and grey shades from now on.
6. The primary cause of all this is "grain". You have technically far too advanced and those civilisations failed to work out a smart way to produce food? Snyder's creative mind alone can answer these questions.
7. Right from costumes, dialogues, hair, lighting, editing and direction are mediocre.
Snyder is one of the directors who thinks his imagination and vision is on another level. Watch his interviews. The thing is visionaries already did all these with less budget and more creative output. A man should know when to stop really. If you are going to design your main villain after Nazis for a sci-fi film in 2023, you should really hang up.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
Surprisingly Predictable!
Am I watching a live action Monster universe unfold or the stupidity of the lead cast unravel in this back and forth episodes.
The director tried too much to show the trauma from the past that the memories come back to haunt her even when she is walking, singing, searching and even trying to escape the security. Too much. We got it. She has gone through trauma that any human did not suffer in the world🙄 but isn't it deliberate to make the show interesting?
Apple show directors follows an annoying pattern in their shows. They try too much to look rich and sound intelligent usually ends up like a messed up soup.
Prepare to experience the mental trauma heroine goes through rather than some kick ass monster battles. May be they are saved for the last few episodes. But whatever that is leading to those battles, is definitely not well set up in the first few episodes.
Family Switch (2023)
Netflix, please stop making feature films.
I am not going to discuss the plot as there is not much to even mention about. But the way this holiday comedy was directed that made me write this review.
I do not know how Netflix always excels at putting up good cast and miserably fails in utilizing that talent. This one does not do any justice to Garner or Emma. The meeting in which she had to pitch and idea to the company, the director could have made it more situational comedy. He had many references from The Office, Parks and Recreation, Silicon Valley, Suits, Mythic Quest, The IT Crowd and many more funny shows and yet he came up with Garner munching on ice cream because now she is a football playing teenager and then she farts and makes a mess at the meeting. That was as predictable and silly as anyone can go.
The baby comedy slowly transcends from being cute to bizzare and not funny at times.
It does not feel like a Christmas movie or a Holiday special or even a comedy. Little efforts from the creators and this could have been funnier and little intelligent.
1 * for the efforts from entire Netflix team including the Director.
Dhootha (2023)
How can anyone write a protagonist as bad as this for a TV series?
The concept is intriguing. You will be engaged right from the beginning but you will be constantly irked with Naga Chaitanya's character in the show. He is grumpy like a 45 year old, talks like he is the owner of the most successful media empire in the telugu states, but acts like a petty criminal with no proper thought process. I understand that it is for making the plot interesting, to create a dark and tense environment around the plot, but it makes us wonder whom to root for in the entire story. The senseless use of cuss words just for the sake of it continues in this show and it gets on your nerve's after few episodes.
I finished six episodes and felt ok. Vikram's work could have been better in making the lead characters more relatable. Camera work is neat. BG score is ok but not so memorable.
Will edit this review if the last 2 episodes make any sense and give a good closure to this plot.
Nishabdham (2020)
Painful 2 hours or so hoping for something great to happen.
A painful feeling all along. A great cast under used with a half baked script. There is nothing thrilling about this movie or script or performances.
Penguin (2020)
A poorly directed movie.
The director tried something but it ended up half baked. At times keerthi suresh as a mother was annoying leaving the kid's hand everywhere she goes. A lame direction to arrange a meet between the father and mother at a crowded place. It looked like desperately placed scene to create an obvious tension. only finished the movie as I started watching.
Mindhunter: Episode #2.8 (2019)
Boring to the core.No wonder Netflix loosing subscribers
What a boring season. From intriguing intense conversations to stupid fillers, this is really a boring season. A documentary kind of a feel after 3-4 episodes and you finish the series only to finish what you started. Netflix better get their act together or Disney is gonna consume at one go.
Impulse: Pilot (2018)
Weak characterisation of the female lead is annoying in the pilot
In the pilot there are instances where the lead tries to sound smart. The scene in the class room and the argument she makes about his Masters etc. ooh teenagers.
In contrast, she lamely lie to the brother about not meeting the guy before the incident in the truck.and the way she tries to escape when his brother follows them in a car. I mean where was she really planning to go? Was she thinking that if they drive fast they could escape his brother ? The direction was lame.
Ok, she teleports or jumps from the truck to her home by accident. She brings with her a piece of the car too. The smart girl who knows to not call her professor a Doctor because he doesn't have a Ph.D, doesn't know to hide or throw of the junk ? Instead she hides it in her closet. Wow, I really felt like stopping the show then and there. I did ofcourse a couple of times.
This episode has nothing to boast about. Personally, i did not like the cast. I did not feel connected to many characters, except brother of the guy who tries to molest her.
I will try 2more episodes as I like the concept of teleportation and it's dimensions. If i feel the characters are projected weak like in the pilot, then I am done with this show.
Sense8: Amor Vincit Omnia (2018)
Fitting Finale
Things could have been different if only the makers had a chance to film one more season. 2h:30m is what they had and boy they make you emotional all the way.
Yes, it feels silly at few places. I felt rushed at few places.Everything falls in place for the cluster in this episode. But the flavour is all there. You will relate to each and every character in the plot.
Maybe that's the only way it could have ended, or maybe not. All I can say is "Amor Vincit Omnia", "Love Conquers All" in English. At the end of it you feel loved. I could have easily kissed my girl right after finishing it but she is out of town.
