This Is Jinsy (2010)
Gold star Absurdist comedy!
This show sits within that specific genre where people either love it or hate it. I'm not a fan of all absurdest comedy, but once I started watching this I just couldn't stop! It has a hypnotic quality that I just can't describe and it sucks you in. It's just so fabulously fresh and out there, but in a way where it has such momentum going from one crazy and entertaining thing to the next, that there is no time to ponder on one thing too long and get bored with the format at all.
Adding further to this; the show has (for me at least) that rare quality where despite the "nuttiness", it still has enough coherence to make sense without totally losing me. I also love the inspirational story behind the incredibly talented duo who star in and write the show, so I'm crossing all my fingers that we get the third season they so deserve.
If you enjoy something completely on the flip side, with a lot of (very well done and thought out) absurdity thrown in, then do yourself a favour and watch this gem. Hopefully the more positive reviews they receive, the more likely it will be that we'll get another season. Although I understand that this show isn't for everybody, I'm pretty confident that for fans of such niche genres, this show will become an instant cult classic!
WARNING: Be prepared to have the songs and ditties from this show stick in your head for days on end...aaarrgggh!!!!
Nightly Bye all ;-)
A Little Chaos (2014)
A Whimsical and lovely period film that leaves you feeling warm and uplifted
Obviously I have to agree with some previous reviews, that this film is a totally idealised fantasy rather than a true or accurate representation of the people and times it portrays. However, it was great to see a new period film that wasn't laden too heavily with depressing themes and outcomes (which generally tends to be more the norm) A sweet, unpretentious, feel good film executed beautifully by all. Although the film is more whimsical than it is deep, I think it achieved what it set out to do and I don't think it tries to be more than that. It left me feeling uplifted and good inside and I'd definitely watch it again sometime and recommend it to others. If you like period films and want something that makes you feel good and not have to think too hard about it all, then just go with it and enjoy this film for what it is. Don't over analyse it's historical "accuracy" too much, it's entertainment not a documentary;-)
Housebound (2014)
A Wonderful, Refreshing Surprise!
After the endless, mind numbing, clichéd, regurgitated rubbish one has to sift through these days, just hoping to find something truly enjoyable and a bit original; stumbling across this great little gem returns my faith a bit. It's great to be reminded that fresh and inspired ways of telling a story ARE still out there! It may be harder to find them now, but when you do, it's like a breath of fresh air to a movie lover like myself.
There are only two movies to have done this for me very recently, "NO ONE LIVES" and now, HOUSEBOUND. Although two very different movies, it's the fresh and entertaining take on the genre that really stands out. It proves once more that you don't need famous actors, big directors or massive budgets;just talented vision and good story telling.
For what it was trying to achieve within the genre, HOUSEBOUND was a perfect film for me. I laughed, I cringed, I was intrigued,I cared about what happened to all the relevant characters and the production quality was good. The Kiwi's don't do it often, but when when they do, they do it well. I won't say anything more about it, just watch it and see for yourself.
I hope to see more from this film maker in the future!
The Neighbors (2012)
Kind of like My Family meets Third Rock from the Sun
I agree with a previous review I read. This show probably isn't as popular as it should be, which is a shame. The show is quirky, funny and is just getting it's momentum, if given the chance. If I was to give a quick analogy of this show, it's kind of like, "My Family" meets "Third Rock from the Sun".
Although not quite at the level of the afore mentioned shows, I think it has plenty of potential to become one of the more interesting little cult comedy shows out there. Unfortunately, we now exposed to such a mass of unoriginal rubbish, which sadly seems to thrive. So let's hope this potential little gem is given the chance it deserves to prove itself.
The show is still getting it's legs, so I hope it continues to gain confidence and originality. If it does that, it may make it beyond a second season and start to gain more of an audience.
Worth a watch if you're looking for something new and off the cuff.
The Last Exorcism (2010)
A very dismal and disappointing piece of work from a great up and coming director of this genre : - (
Well first I would like to say that I am a genuine Eli Roth fan. I have found his original and fresh additions to the horror/thriller film genre so far, really enjoyable and entertaining. I also still expect to see a lot of good things to come from him in the future, especially with mentors and influences in his life like Q Tanrantino for example.
HOWEVER, This movie was quite frankly a boring, awfully slow and unoriginal one. It was also produced in a style that has been so overdone to death! Maybe I am a bit biased, because I personally can't stand the (quite literally) nauseating documentary style of fiction film making. I find it just way too contrived, and the novelty of it started by the Blair Witch project wore off on me long ago.
I was very surprised and disappointed in regards to just how boring and nothing this movie was. I fast forwarded pretty much through the whole thing just to see any "highlights" appear somewhere. Although I commend him for trying something out of his comfort zone, I think this film may have been scarier if Roth had stuck to the style that has worked for him best in this particular case. The creepiest and best bits of the film were in the promo ads. The movie didn't live up to what I believed the promo ad was promising to deliver.
In conclusion, although I found this movie disappointing, I still have faith and look forward to see what Eli Roth has in store for me next time around. Even the best director or artist has a mediocre piece of work appear somewhere along the line. You can't please everyone all of the time after all. But I know he has a lot more to offer this genre of film making in the future, of which I am such a fan :-)
