Off the Map: Smile. Don't Kill Anyone. (2011)
The 2nd Episode Flop
The first episode, to me, showed a lot of room for growth. It started strong but there was room for improvement that I felt the show would find with each new episode.
However... Episode 2 went for the ridiculous. The cast is the only saving grace, and while I so much wanted to like the episode, the plot lines, lack of inventiveness and subtly helped to highlight the truly sub par writing. The dialogue works but oh, the ideas... Watching, it felt like the writers were like, "we have this great premise... uh oh, where do we go with it... oh well, this will do..."
Hopefully this was just a kink... Although an episode kink this early, I find worrisome.
The Day the Music Died (2010)
Moving
I was not well acquainted with the tale of Buddy Holly until now though I have always had an appreciation for his music. Even though this story is more an interpretation of his life and struggles, I learned a lot about Holly's ethos. They portrayed a dreamer with a real naiveté who didn't approach his path with the vigilance I can assume the real Buddy Holly did. I found it interesting because it wasn't expected.
I was delighted at how well lensed this film was too and I really enjoyed the cast's performances. Guy Kent was just wonderfully moving. And that music was a treat! It was modern but managed to stay familiar and helped bridge the time between the 50's and the present day of the story.
I'm very intrigued to see what is next for the director and cast!
Simply wonderful!
