Black Snake Moan (2006)
Samuel L is awesome
I just got back watching Black Snake Moan at The Studio on the Square in Memphis which was pretty cool knowing that its kind of Craig Brewer's Graceland. I think everything he's ever made has played there. Music is great in the movie which is what everyone will talk about, though most people may not mention how authentic the southern feel is to this film. Other movies seem to just insult the south like Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown, but with Brewer from Memphis there's just a real 'you're there' feel to the whole movie. It does what every great movie should do. It makes you think, forces you to react, and actually has a great message of forgiveness and being judgemental in probably the most unconventional way possible without having a bit of preachiness to it. See this one in theatres.
Elizabethtown (2005)
Total Fiasco
I'm a huge Crowe fan, and had high expectations going in, but wow....its awful. I think Orlando Bloom is in the running for 'least funny' actor of all time. I just didn't understand what's supposed to be funny about an attempted suicide, a father dying, and taking care of funeral arrangements. This is typical Hollywood: Southern people are idiots, we love skynard, and there's a poor fake southern accent by Spiderman's girlfriend. This could be Bloom's Gigli. I'm sure they'll cut out 30 minutes cause it moves very slow. I just couldn't buy the plot. No town exists like this one. No one seems to care the father died at all. The irony is the theme is about a person being creative but sometimes creative people create more that just failures, just creating disasters, and this movie is a disaster. The music is good, but seems forced. The ending almost redeems itself but the acting is god-awful. It's like watching a high school play where the lines being said sound like memorized lines instead of real dialogue. I hate that I hate this movie. This is the only movie that I've seen that was a comedy that needed comic relief from the comedy. The guy who plays Chuck is great in the movie, but he's only in it 5 minutes or less. My advice is that they do not release this movie, edit it to ten minutes, change the name to "Chuck" and put chuck in every scene and let Alec Baldwin have a cameo. Chuck should do the voice-over. Unless Lord of the Rings part 4 comes out, I can't imagine Bloom having much of a worthy career. He's terrible. This movie proves comedy is an art, and not everyone can do it. One last thing...how is having Bloom hook up with Kirsten Dunst an unlikely romance? This movie couldn't be more predictable, and it truly is a fiasco.
EuroTrip (2004)
Loved the Theme Song
This movie is very funny. It wasn't quite Old School or Road Trip, although it uses a similar plot to Road Trip. I still loved it though and laughed a lot. I'm a total sucker for cameos, and Matt Damon and David Hasslehoff were hilarious. Props to the theme song, "Scotty Doesnt Know". Props to the AOL 'you've got mail' message.' The only thing this movie was missing was a Steve Stifler, a Will Ferrell, or a Belushi from Animal House. All the lead characters were nice, but you need a likeable mean-spirited person in a movie like this. Its definitely one of the better teen comedies. Oh, yeah, the British soccer guys are hillarious, and the sequence they are introduced in, where everyone is singing is one of the funniest sequences in a movie i've ever seen. This may be slightly offensive to catholics. Near the end, the whole crowd virtually gasped in the theatre from shock, but in the end this movie totally rocks.
Comic Book: The Movie (2004)
Unwatchable: Stay away from this one!
I heard a promo for this movie on the howard stern show and figured I'd give it a try. I hated it. Watching movies like this make me value the Guest movies (Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind, and Best and Show) and the grand master of them all, Spinal Tap, but this movie is a poser, and unwatchable. Not one character is believable. In these documentary style films the characters have to be believable, and none of the characters are close to feeling real. If you want to watch a movie you may not have seen in this genre but want to see a funny one with good characters, check out Fubar. That's a good one, funny, memorable, and believable.
American Wedding (2003)
a must see
This is one of those movies I had to see and it didn't disappoint. Its really funny. I'm glad they based the movie around Stifler because he's the funniest character. I thought Scott tried a little hard to be Stifler at the beginning of the movie though. He was overacting a little bit, and at the beginning I thought, "man this movie is gonna suck." But its great, maybe the best. I kind of thought there was gonna be a serious moment like they have on sitcom shows where Jim is talking to stifler and stifler lets out that he doesn't haven't any friends and Jim, Finch, and that dork...oh yeah Kevin, are his only friends. They don't though. But like the previous movies this one has a heart just like the previous ones. I think they should keep this franchise going. I think they should stop at part 5 or 6. Michelle's dad is awesome. The whole cast did good, and kudos to the writers for putting in the script what every fan in the theatre was thinking the last two movies when Kevin starts to lift up his glass for a toast and they tell him to shut up. As long as the script is good I think they should keep making these movies.
Bad Boys II (2003)
Fun time. Don't bring your brain though.
This is a real fun movie if you can remember to forget to bring your brain to the theatre which i can do. Most movies have boring spots at some point, but Bad Boys is always action packed. I thought it was better than the first, maybe not as hip because the leads are now old fogies, but Lawrence is very funny. He should be funny since this is the 50th straight movie he's played a cop. Anyways. It's good, but (spoilers) I just want to see the deleted scenes on the dvd when the military questions why Miami PD is fighting the Cuban Army, why Mike Lowry never asks for backup, and why special op guys from wars past are willing to risk their lives to save one girl. Not very realistic, but a lot of fun, and very funny. Peace out yalls.
Hollywood Homicide (2003)
another bad buddy movie
Someone needs to kill this genre of buddy movies. The only reason I went to this movie is b/c I'm friends with a firemen who gets in the movies for a dollar. Virtually every song in the sountrack was rap music which was apparently to make the movie hip. Ford and Hartnett are allright (although Ford is not believable as a running around action hero). Hans Solo gave a good effort, but the script is bad, horrible supporting actors, (did i mention the script is bad?), and it's extrememly predictable. The movie wasn't the least original and seemed liked it was written for Jackie Chan or Martin Lawrence. That's the ultimate crappy buddy movie. Maybe Chris Tucker can be in it too. Sorry, I'm just burnt out on buddy movies. Harrison Ford does have one funny scene in the movie where he steals a little girl's bike. This was still better than dumb and dumberer. peace out homes.
Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003)
Olsen twins couldn't have saved it
This was quite possibly the worst sequel ever made. Hmmm. I'm trying to remember a worse sequel. Most sequels aren't as good, but they're not usually horrible. (exception, the 'Scream' franchise and 'I still know what you did 400 summers ago' franchise sucked pretty bad) Contrary to popular theory, casting was not the problem. The writing was terrible. I loved the original. It was the Farrelly's bros at their best. The orig. had a clever story. The joke of this movie is, "whoa these guys are so stupid..ha ha." I almost walked out of the theatre. Bob Sagat does make the movie enjoyable for the 20 seconds he's in it. The talented Olsen twins couldn't have even saved this movie. Why can't people make good comedies? Good comedy, meaning a movie that's clever that you'll laugh at. Anyways. I'm out.
