Somos lo que hay (2010)
Didn't Live Up To Expectations
I am a huge fan of European films and of horrors and with this film being compared to Let The Right One In in many reviews I read, my expectations were high. This apparently does for cannibals what Let The Right One In did for vampires.. Unfortunately the film didn't live up to my expectations. An enjoyable film needs to have at least one of the following: strong dialogue, interesting storyline, intreging characters, excitement, terrific direction; We Are What We Are, I felt, had little or none of any. I didn't know enough about the characters to care about them getting food and saw no reason why they should kill the innocent (or whores as they muchly discussed) so that they could eat? Nor did I like the mother, or the youngest brother. I felt no attachment to the incestuous relationship. I felt that the mockery of the police was pointless and frustrating. I stayed in the cinema to watch the film and I wasn't bored just highly disappointed. Would I recommend this movie? No... Do I feel like I wasted 90minutes of my life watching it? No... It was just an OK portrayal of a family coping with their issues. Don't rush to the cinema to see it (unless like me you have unlimited membership) just wait until its shown on Channel 4 if ever it is.
Let Me In (2010)
Hidden Gem
I went to see this film two weeks ago with my Mum (who loves horror films just as much as me) and although we went expecting to be frightened, we were entertained much more than with a few scares. We were however, shocked that we were the only ones in the cinema and for this reason did not expect the film to be as good as it turned out to be! Having seen the original (Let The Right One In) 18 months ago, I was more impressed with the 2010 remake (which doesn't happen often!) The two main characters Owen and Abbey draw you into the story and into their lives. Owen, a 12 year old boy who has no friends, an alcoholic mother and is being bullied at school and Abbey, a young vampire girl who relies on her keeper to feed her. Also a loner, Abbey befriends Owen and later in the film we learn that he will replace her current keeper (Richard Jenkins). Unlike usual horror films, Let Me In shows the reasoning behind the villains motives and similarly to We Are What We Are, the audience is intrigue by the killer and are let encouraging their behaviour. Unlike We Are What We Are, Let Me In is much more than a horror film, its a story of friendship, teenage anxieties and family break ups and for this reason I give the film 10/10. A highly recommendable, enjoyable, believable portrait of Vampire life (if there were such thing) which is acted and directed faultlessly.
Unstoppable (2010)
Fun, Well-Paced Action Movie
I didn't know what to expect when I went to see Unstoppable last week. I love thrillers, like action so I wasn't sure of my take on this but I absolutely loved it. A good looking cast and superb acting add to this highly entertaining movie. I found the storyline to be interesting enough that I felt emotion for the characters and the action to be enough for me to be fidgeting in my seat! If you liked Speed then this comes close, go see this film whilst its at the cinema for maximum enjoyment! I give 9/10 because it has everything a good, fun action film should. I liked the actors but as with a lot of films small things could be changed to make room for improvement but for what it is, this flick is almost perfect!
