Mimi wo sumaseba (2022)
It's difficult to watch
I've watched the original Whisper of the Heart by Studio Ghibly more than five times and I love it!
This here... well, it is terrible. I'm not sure if it's just Japanese acting, inspired by Noh theater that I simply do not understand, or bad writing, forcing OK actors to act terribly or if the actors are just plainly bad, but it's hard to watch. This over the top emotionalism, that is very much welcome in Anime (not Studio Ghibli Anime, but rather weaker works in the Shonen genre) is lost in live action.
Also, Seiji went to Italy to learn to build violins, not to learn to play the cello. What is this? And where is the grandfather? Even in the memory-part, where he should have been very much alive, they talk about him as if he were dead which is not in line with the Anime.
A Disturbance in the Force (2023)
Boring and useless
I went into this documentary with an open mind, knowing that the Holiday Special was a disaster, being quite critical about the prequels and especially the Disney-Star-Wars-movies... well, this is a boring piece of... work. People were interviewed and were paid and for that? This is a boring piece about a true failure. Is this what we have come to in our era?
Also, interviewing Kevin Smith and Patton Oswalt for your documentary is perhaps as bad of a move as making a Holiday Special in itself.
The former is known for his extremely liberal remake of He-Man that flopped - which is great. The latter had every unvaxxed person banned from his comedy shows. How can you even trust the opinions of persons like this?
One Piece (2023)
Now I want to watch the Anime.
I've tried to watch One Piece, the anime, once or twice, but somehow it did not pick up. Maybe the characters were too weird, and it all seemed somehow silly so I never watched more than the first three episodes. And since most real life adaptations of anime are horrible, I was more than skeptical about this one. However, since I follow critics on YouTube like the Critical Drinker, Chris Gore, Nerdrotic etc. And they repeatedly said that this adaptation is everything it should be, I gave it a try and boy am I glad I did. This is, by far, one of the best productions I have seen in years! There is so much love and detail and so little w0ke politics in there. So what that the main character is now blackish/Hispanic? It really does not destroy the story in the slightest, as opposed to most of the recent race-swaps on Netflix. Plus he's supposed to be Brazilian.
I enjoyed this series so much that it almost pains me that the first season is over and I'm usually quite nonsensitive when it comes to movies and series, especially lately because there is literally nothing new to watch that is actually good. Well, One Piece is more than good, it is great and I hope that Eiichiro Oda stays the production's advisor and keeps his veto and the power to rewrite the script, because this man knows how to write.
Now I really want to know how the story continues and will probably watch the anime.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Best movie of 2022 or maybe even the decade
I rarely rate movies with 10 stars and I never write reviews, but this stunning masterpiece deserves the highest of praises. It combines a very good script with masterful directing, a perfect score as well as great actors and delivers an absolutely crazy, beautiful and emotional film that left me stunned and crying tears of joy at the end.
Also I loved the kung-fu parts. It has been so long since a movie with great martial arts came out. This one will forever be in my heart as a favorite.
