Sororal (2014)
Weird Turn Near The Ending
I watched Sororal as part of the Horrorant "Fright nights" festival. I was pretty excited with the whole festival as a horror fan.
The lights went off and on the black screen we saw the images of the female lead's paintings. It was a start that gained and lost many people in the audience. And then the story begins.
We have a serial killer, murders, a traumatized female lead and a weird connection between her past and the killer. Acting was OK for most of the cast (the bride-to-be was not that good in my opinion). I don't even remember the soundtrack (neither amazing, nor annoying). Colours were deep and reminded me those of a "giallo" film (like many other elements in this film).
The story started really good. The plot was interesting with some creepy moments, the characters were introduced nicely. We saw blood but no actual gore, something that kept the viewers watching and didn't make them look away from the screen. The basic idea is quite original and fresh. What changed everything (even the movie's genre in a way), were the last few minutes the movie. It wasn't the ending, but the way it was delivered that I didn't expect. Maybe they wanted to use more effects, maybe they wanted to give a lighter final feeling. If so, they succeeded, maybe not in the way they intended to.
My last impression is that the film is a little better than simply OK. It's neither unpleasant nor jaw-dropping. It also has something different (at least I don't remember having seen anything similar) and interesting. Overall, it was a nice effort with a weird turn somewhere near the end.
I Liza kai oloi oi alloi (2003)
If girls were like that I would have changed country...
OK, so I really loved Eirini Merkouri's song for this movie and I decided to watch it. I read that it had to do with the problems of young girls in Greece, through the eyes of a 25 year old girl. That it's a movie that answers to what most girls want to know. Well, the movie wasn't what I expected at all. The main female character is a girl that likes a guy and tries to do everything so she can win and then keep him. Nothing unusual. But she is one of the worst role models a girl could have (that's what they intended to make her since she gives advices). Her problems aren't real problems, she cares way too much about her looks, makes fun about girls she finds fat or ugly and tries to be the perfect sex-toy for her guy. In a healthy relationship both sides have to put effort! But here, in this "perfect relationship" it is mostly about sex and I saw no chemistry or real quality time between the two of them. It is way too humiliating for females, not because girls like this don't exist (they do), but because most girls have nothing to do with the image this movie showed. Most girls of my age in Greece aren't like this! They have actual problems and most importantly self respect, something that the lead-girl had none. The whole movie was shallow and just ruined my day! P.S. In a few years I'm sure she will kill herself cause she wouldn't be able to handle aging.
Beastly (2011)
You might like it if you are a teenage girl...
The film has to do with the hot guy that cares only for the appearance of others, but after a curse, comes to realize that beauty is more than you see. The classic "Beauty and the Beast" concept, with two of the most "regular" actors of my generation. Of course it's "teenage-girls" targeted and I think that this category might like it, cause of the actors and the sometimes "fairytale atmosphere".
OK, here's my opinion though. So you shave the head of a kind of handsome guy, put on some tattoos and expect him to be -what!- ugly? And you think that it's "Beastly" too. I saw nothing beastly in this film.
Then there is the "why Hollywood teenage films have to promote the beautiful girls for average?". Especially in this film, where it's theme is that inner beauty is what counts. I read that they tried to make Vanessa Hudgens look normal (as they wanted to do with Twilight's Bella). They failed (both times) for me! We ended up with a leading actress who's attitude towards camera had nothing to do with an average-looking girl. She is actually a pretty girl, so I know it would be silly to make her look ugly, but why put so much effort to look breathtaking? It looked fake to me!
I also didn't find any chemistry between the two main actors. It didn't touch me not even a little. I wasn't sure if I wanted and expected them to end up together, though I knew that was the concept. And what kind of cold ending was that? It caught me of guard. I did't expect it to be "too much", as screaming and crying, but this was way too cold!
I didn't want to sound too harsh, it's not a horrible movie! Neil Patrick Harris was excellent for me and made me give a total of 5/10 to the film. His role and the general friendly scene made me not to feel like I wasted my time watching it, but I have no interest in doing so again. It's just the kind of movie you watch and the next second you have already forgotten that it exists.
