The Ipcress File (2022)
Fingers on the Pulse of the Era
Only in the UK though, everywhere else were still stuck in the tedious 1950's. The USA never did have a rising up of the working class unless you count the BlackPower movement. Perhaps this explains the negative reviews - that and no silly Kungfu fights and shoot em ups.
Anyone who actually lived through this era would not say this lacked realism. The writers definitely capture the spirit of the times - witty dialogue and expressions benefitting from hindsight'
Why would anyone want a repeat of the Michael Caine film?! He and Nigel Green were the most memorable things but in other respects this series is better.
Are they meant to "Be cool, calm and collected, being spies and all." What else?
Star Trek: Picard: The Star Gazer (2022)
BACK TO THE PAST
In accordance with current zeitgeist completely allergic to innovation. Boring Whoopi Goldberg, tiresome Q, failsafe Borg. Add a cigar smoking Han Solo clone and a few 'Friends' style social interactions... tired phrases (time/space anomaly for gods sake!).
Old age Patrick? Or "must make money" executives at you shoulder?
T-34 (2018)
Classic Movie - but not in American
I rate this alongside films such as The magnificent Seven, Guns of Navarone...as entertainment not history. But must be watched with Subtitles!
Started watching the 'American version' and gave up after ten minutes in disgust at the banal dialogue (sadly reminiscent of so many Hollywood movies). I had a suspicion that maybe the original might be worth checking - and so it was - the dialogue even via subtitles was so refreshing.
Again the matrix style slow motion shell action put me off but I accept this sop to the trendy - disregard because this is great cinema
Excursion (2018)
Dear me
The Wizard of Oz, Jaws and the Exorcist.!!!
how could it possibly be not up to these 'standards'
I'll give it a try
Semnadtsat mgnoveniy vesny (1973)
It takes one to know one
This has three virtues:
1 the archive footage
2 the skillful implementation of the era and its environs (courtesy of 1!)
3 an illustration of self serving apparatchiks in any regime - regardless. Mueller has to be the paradigm, who shows what was wrong with 'soviet Russia'. Because of this one has to wonder if this series shows that there were still people aware of this. Bodhisattavas perhaps?
The Dinosaur Project (2012)
Good if you are unaware its so Derivative
Which is hard to believe of its director. However, if your familiar with Conan Doyles Lost World and Michael Crichtons Congo then you will have to be happy with the fact that its a very good enthusiastic rehash. Except that the unrestrained use of hand-held camera work is so annoying. Still this is the only credible Dinosaur movie since Jurassic Park 1 so if - like me - you feel the dearth it is definitely worth your time. In fact I hope they make a sequel (with normal camera work). Richard Dillane is a more credible Indian Jones than Harrison Ford and the location Scenery is excellent. Why IMDb discriminates against concise reviews is beyond me, there's surely enough waffle in the world already
Sherlock (2010)
Watch The Pilot First
First watch the unaired pilot and you'll see how good it could have been, better in fact than the Robert Downey blockbuster.
The revised first episode is inferior though and its the best of the rest. Bringing in Moriarty shows they are looking to ape American series: Buffy/Charmed/ad nauseum and avoid writing original scripts. This is one area where faithfulness to the original stories was needed.
Benedict Cumberbatch' 60s wardrobe is inspired and his contemptuous disregard for contemporary servility will hopefully inspire a fashion itself. 'British Corporate Broadcasting' would particularly benefit. One suspects the deadening hand of executives lies behind the faults in this brilliant concept.
