American Playhouse: Into the Woods (1991)
One of Sondheim's best.
It was this show that first introduced me to the wonderful world of Sondheim, and, for that reason, it will always have a special place in my heart. In my opinion, Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George, and Sweeny Todd are Sondheim's greatest works, and three of the greatest musicals of our time. Bernadette Peters is the absolute queen of Sondheim shows, and this is one of her greatest roles. She is the definitive witch, and her performance sparkles with a huge spectrum of feelings and emotions. This is one of those shows that can make you laugh and cry almost instantaneously. Some of the standout songs include the hilarious 'Agony,' the heartfelt 'No One is Alone' and 'Children Will Listen,' and, my favourite, 'Your Fault/Last Midnight,' which, I think, is so easily applied, and makes such a huge statement about our materialistic society today. This is a must-have for any Sondheim or Bernadette fan. A brilliant show!
American Playhouse: Sunday in the Park with George (1986)
A musical theatre masterpiece.
Sondheim is a musical genius, and Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters are two of the most brilliant performers I have ever seen, so it is no surprise that this is such an excellent film. The music is gorgeous, and has the ability to touch your soul. The emotions conveyed by Patinkin and Peters are very real, and heartfelt. This makes me cry every time I see it. This show really captures the difficulties and detachment that can be applied to the lives of all artists, not just painters. This musical is well-written, well-cast, and well-acted, and I would highly recommend it, especially to anyone involved in the arts. One warning is that people who are not familliar with Sondheim should go into it with an open mind, because if you are expecting a typical Hollywood musical, it's not what you'll find. If you watch this on DVD, don't miss the commentary by Sondheim, Peters, and Patinkin (and possibly James Lapine), because it gives a lot of nice extra information.
