Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves! (1997)
Okay for kids
I loved Rick Moranis' films when I was little. Still love him. My 5 year old has now watched Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and its sequel - HIBUTK. He loved both, as I did when I was younger. He then asked to watch the third film and I was reluctant, as I'd never seen it myself. We watched it together and it's nowhere near as good as the first two. Rick tries his best, but it's clear that his heart just wasn't in it by this point. Took a while to explain why the mum was a different actor and where Nick had gone. I also didn't like the new dynamic where Diane seemed quite bitter, resentful, and almost hateful towards Wayne (total personality change) and I don't think some comments about marriage are necessary in a quirky kids' movie. Though, the supporting actors did the best with the material they were given I guess. Anyway, my kid quite liked it, but I don't think we'll be watching it again any time soon.
Wellmania (2023)
Enjoyed it
I've been following Celeste Barber on Instagram for a few years and I find her hilarious. She didn't disappoint in this programme. Her character does seem quite rude and annoying to begin with, but that's just because of the stage of life she is in. She doesn't want to be in Australia and she really doesn't want to have to deal with unfinished business, both emotionally and in her relationships. Her character is on a journey and you have to stick with it.
I found Celeste funny, but she also showed a range of emotions throughout the series. Great supporting cast and well written. The episode with the death doula was very poignant, especially when they were singing.
I truly hope to see Celeste in more shows in the future.
The Lovely Bones (2009)
Boring, but pretty...
After reading The Lovely Bones, I was looking forward to seeing the film (although almost always it never lives up to the book). My boyfriend had not read the book, but found the film as dull as I did.
The visual effects when Susie is in "limbo" are stunning, however the original story is unfortunately completely lost.
It was meant to be Susie getting murdered and the after-effects of her going missing and her family falling apart. All whilst Susie is watching and telling the story.
Her family seem to cope okay in the film. Her mother's decline is so fast you almost miss it and her dad going slightly insane is also done within a blink of the eye. There were some complex characters in the book, who only had bit parts in the film (such as Ray Simgh and Ruth)and who were mentioned at the beginning then appeared near the end. It seemed like everything happened in a week, rather than over some years, as in the book.
The film was cast well, although I find Mark Wahlberg very cheesy at times.
Some of the music chosen was extremely cheesy, which made me laugh and feel slightly embarrassed to be watching it! This film could have been made so much better by just exploring the characters more, but unfortunately most of the time was obviously spent on creating stunning visual effects, which, although were amazing, still did not necessarily look like as described in the book.
This might be a good film to see if you haven't read the book (although my boyf. didn't enjoy it), but for me it was a complete wash-out.
Inception (2010)
Amazing Film!
If you like Leo's acting, sci-fi, the Matrix and just generally good films, then go and see Inception.
A really clever concept, which kept me glued to the screen. I even cried at one point, but I am a big emotional wreck, haha!
It's a cracking film with extremely clever special effects. The casting is good and the acting is second to none. I thought it would be more mindbending, as the Matrix was, but it was an easy concept to get my head around, which in turn made it more enjoyable to watch as you could possibly see something along these lines taking place in the future in some form or another...
Definitely worth a watch!
