A Certain Kind of Death (2003)
Good but not captivating.
The film follows the events that happen following three people's deaths in LA county. None of them have next of kins and are in the hand of the government.
Overall, it was good but not captivating enough. Only one of the three I felt that I really gotten to know his life or who he is. The other two people followed in the film felt "incomplete." The people they interviewed also did not seem passionate enough about their jobs, and as a result, I did not feel the emotions I expected from a film with its goal.
A Wedding in Ramallah (2002)
One of the best documentary films!
Bassam, a telephone repairman in Cleveland and a palestinian in exile, returned to Palestine to find a wife. He already had one failed marriage in the US where he looked for "love." Since that did not work out, he is not averse to having an arranged marriage this time around. He later met his future wife, Mariam, and after knowing each other for a couple weeks, they got married. From then on, he had to go back to the U.S. while Mariam moved in with Bassam's family in their town. There, we are introduced to Bassam's sister-in-law who is also in a long wait for her husband to come back from the U.S. just to visit her. Eventually after a long long wait, Mariam gets to go to the U.S. while her in-law is still waiting for her immigration paper (and she has waited for more than 7 years already but her husband continues to refuse to allow her to join him in New York City). There onward, only a short segment of the film focuses on Mariam's life in Cleveland. Is it a happy ending? Like everything in life, it depends on your point of view.
I absolutely loved this movie because even though it is documentaries and allotted ample time for everyone to tell his or her story in front of the camera, it was never boring! It was always captivating and truly heart-breaking. The film also showed some real footage of the fightings on the street of Palestine. Over all, I feel that Sherine did a good job allowing the audience to decide who is right or wrong because everyone has his or her own reasons and it is never easy to cast blame on one person alone. I was held at the end of my seat throughout the movie. 9 out of 10.
Yi yi (2000)
Beautiful movie....
A beautifully shot movie.
Multiple relationships were carefully interwined. And the consequences of every choice made by each character were laid on for the audience to see and judge. The most fascinating relationship was the one between N.J. and his ex-lover from highschool. Don't we all wonder at times if our more simple past is better than the complex present.? but was it truly simple? could clock really be turned back? don't we all have to live with the consequences?
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Poor reflection of reality
I don't understand why the film is getting such high rating on this website. The theme has been dealt with in other movies and better done else where. I simply could not get into the movie. The scenes were not shot particularly well. Lastly, many errors and exaggerations in the film, especially about the health care professionals who take care of the mentally illed. I don't know. I just don't think that is very responsible of the film makers.
Fight Club (1999)
Entertaining but not very deep.
It is a very entertaining film, with all the violence and actions. The plot is somewhat intriguing as well. However, I just felt that the film tries too hard to deal with the topic of "the Unconscious," and the other half of self. Yet, it falls very short of developing it as a themem. In the end, other than chewing on some popcorns, I got nothing out of that movie.
Se7en (1995)
An excuse to be violent...
The only good part of the movie is trying to find out the identity of the killer. However, the rest of the film is just all about finding an excuse to put more blood and violence onto the screen. They never explained why the killer is obsessed with the Seven sins. And the way they found the killer was 100% laughable (going through a city's public library system and find who borrows a book. first of all, wouldn't you buy the book instead of borrowing it from the stupid library? secondly, do they realize how many people use that library and borrow books of the same title?"). A pretty empty film, if you ask me.
