I cant believe some of the comments I have been reading here on Soderbergh's "Solaris". And I'm sure that those people who have called it an excellent cure for insomnia are the same people who make all the Arnold movies box-office blockbusters. But there is no accounting for taste; and one must be kind to the blind. For my money, however, the movie is one of the most "mesmeric" to have come out of Hollywood in recent years; and extremely uplifting in its message of redemption through love....a rare message indeed in today's dog-eat-dog world. Visually stunning, with a highly-appropriate sound-track and passionate performances from the taut cast of six, this is a fine example of the art of movie-making. While it wont make my list of the ten best films I have ever seen, it is certainly something I wont forget in a hurry....and will want to see again and again.

I couldnt agree more with those who describe SB&G as the greatest classic in Indian cinema, followed by "Sholay". While the latter is the quintessential Bollywood blockbuster, SB&G is a mainstream film of another kind --- expertly-crafted, aesthetically breathtaking and profoundly disturbing. Its also a film WAY ahead of its time (was a `flop' at the box-office!) and caused much controversy when it was premiered. It is based on a great Bengali novel, one that exposed the hypocrisy and decadence prevalent in the Zamindari (landed gentry). The film ran into terrible problems with our puritanical censors, because of its sometimes unabashed references to alcoholism and sex. Nominally directed by Abrar Alvi (they say Guru Dutt shadow-directed it....and it shows!) and luminously photographed in B/W, the film has immaculate attention to detail in EVERY respect, starting from the trenchant plot-line and script. Of course there are compromises made to accomodate market-needs, such as a couple of superfluous songs; and some farcical comedy. But if ever there was a case for releasing a "director's cut", lovingly restored, its here. God knows what the censor's scissors threw away. Meena Kumari's performance is the finest given by an actress in Indian cinema....and I will go on to say that its the finest performance given by an actress that I have EVER seen (a close second is Meryl Streep in "Sophie's Choice"). Meena Kumari acts with her FEET --- thats the first we see of her, with her dialogue spoken as a voice-over; then a cut to her incredible face, the eyes betraying a glitter of obsessive-compulsion that is the character's core. Its a performance that stirs you like few will, courageous and uninhibited, honest and intense. Its centre-piece is of course the drunken tirade against her husband, accusing him of impotence. In this, as indeed in every scene, she goes beyond acting into a realm that exists only in the gut. Another great Indian film that is not available on DVD, at least not in our own country. When will we learn to honour our best?

Realism....from Bollywood!!!

"Chandni Bar" is the BEST movie to come out of Bollywood in 4 decades. Its a brave film, speaking unabashedly about the seemy underbelly of Bombay (and YES it is and always will be Bombay to many), about the nexus between crime and the corrupt police in this city, about sin and the hope of redemption dashed by a vicious system. No wonder this was NOT India's entry to the Oscars....our politicians would be loathe to export something that could "create a bad impression" (they sent the ghastly jingoistic "Lagaan" instead). Pity, because, as an example of cinema verite at its grittiest, it would have probably won. Tabu would have definitely been in the running for Best Actress --- her performance is a study in truth and control. I happened to meet her on a plane and asked whether the film was shot more-or-less in sequence; and she answered in the affirmative --- no doubt this helped her create a slowly-intensifying graph of emotion, peaking at her gut-wrenching howls in the final scene. Her subtlety and sensitivity in the role of the dance-hall girl have had few equals seen by this writer in the cinema. Also the film's design, capturing the slums, back-alleys, police-stations and of course the seedy, sexual, smoky, boozy atmosphere of the dance-bar (changing its decor and its music with the passage of time in the plot) has an attention to detail and a REALISM that anyone who has ever been to these places will marvel at. Bravo to all concerned....and now may we PLEASE have this available on DVD?
The Ascent

A Christian parable from Soviet Russia!

I saw "Ascent" in Bombay (dubbed in English) when I was 18, soon after the film was made. I have tried to see it subsequently EVERY TIME it was screened at the local Russian cultural centre. One of the first images in the movie is of a series of telegraph poles in a snowscape, one of which is out of alignment....and you realise that they look rather like the sign of the cross in the Russian Orthodox Church. This is a Judas-Christ parable, with several scenes "composed" like famous paintings of scenes from the Passion. The references and symbolism are endless....in the plot-line, the characters, the mise-en-scene --- the final hanging of the protagonist among "thieves" on a hill (which he has to climb) is a clear reference to Golgotha. The black and white photography is among the most beautiful I have seen; the acting is superb, especially the man playing the protagonist -- though making him a "special agent of the Red Army" is obviously a nod in the direction of Big Brother! I cannot begin to tell you how important this film probably is in world cinema....I use the word "probably" because I am only a film-lover, NOT a film-historian. However, if its available on DVD, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!
