Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Pretty good movie with some unnecessary flaws. Just don't watch the ending
To be honest, i only expected a mediocre action movie going in, but i had to change my mind on that. Even with its flaws, it's still a very entertaining movie that i quite enjoyed.
I certainly did not expect the movie to subvert some action movie tropes in the way it did, which is one of the main reasons i enjoyed this movie so much. In particular, how merciless war was being portrayed, that is something you don't see very often to this extent. The time loop mechanic certainly helped making that possible and was used well in that regard.
However, towards the end the movie takes just about everything it did well, and simply throws it out of the window. The movie was perfectly fine without the female character (who, thanks to the time shenanigans, only knows the protagonist like less than a day) throwing herself at the protagonist. It was perfectly fine without forcing a happy ending, i thought the moment where the heroes were just dead was perfect and is was extremely disappointed to see they didn't just stop there.
And the movie also just had to stop being sensible about how dangerous war is for some reason towards the end, and forget that surviving took the protagonist countless attempts and lots of training. Suddenly they can just handle ridiculously bad odds without second chances. It nullifies what the rest of the movie stood for and what made it interesting, and i honestly recommend simply skipping the ending. I wish i could forget it.
Up until that point, it was thoroughly enjoyable though and i definitely recommend it, it's an action movie that stands out.
Angel Beats! (2010)
Expect nothing, get nearly everything!
I can't quite agree with the other review, which is why i'm writing this one.
"Angel Beats!" takes place in the world after death. The protagonist, Otonashi, lost his memories after his death. Nevertheless he joins a mysterious group, which is fighting "Tenshi" (Angel).
The characters are all really likable and you can remember them easily.
What really stands out are the songs played by the band "Girls Dead Monster". For me, the songs were just awesome, but that obviously depends on the music you like.
I have to admit that the story develops a bit slow at the beginning. The first 4 or 5 five episodes i only watched 1 episode at a time, but then i couldn't stop. The end was one of the most touching i ever saw. During the last episode i cried more than once.
Some scenes, also one in the final episode, feel forced and killed the atmosphere, but otherwise it was a pretty touching anime. Due to the fact, that all of the characters already died, it makes you think about your life and what YOU want to achieve in your life.
It is not perfect, rather slow paced at the beginning and i watched it with no expectations at all. But it also is very touching (at least for me), has an interesting topic and likable characters. I give it 8 out of 10 and can easily recommend this anime. If you can forgive some minor flaws and a slow paced beginning, you will probably enjoy "Angel Beats!". Of course there are better animes out there, but there are also tons of worse ones.
Aoi hana (2009)
Aoi Hana: A wonderful lesbian romance anime
Normally, i'm not the kind of girl who likes romance movies / animes. But this series showed me just how much potential in this genre lies.
"Aoi Hana" is about a lesbian romantic relationship in an all-girl high school. I don't want to spoiler anything, so i'll just say that the story is quite good and it could surprise me more than one time.
Just a note: there are no erotic scenes.
The visuals are quite appealing and contribute to the overall experience. I watched it in HD 720p and can only recommend to watch it in 720p, if possible.
I watched it with the original Japanese sound and the voices are really good. Since the voices affect the atmosphere of the anime i heavily recommend to watch with the Japanese audio and subtitles of your choice.
When i searched for negative aspects i found only one: The series is rather short with 11 episodes.
All in all "Aoi Hana" left me with a nice, warm feeling. It is a beautiful composition of visuals, story and characters and i can recommend it to EVERYONE.
