Sensitive Parts (2017)
A refreshing and splendid slice of life movie
I saw this movie at the Van City Theatre a couple weeks ago and it really struck a chord with me. There are so many big epic movies with tons of explosions but the characters are bland and one-dimensional even a super nova explosion can't help those types of movies.
But yeah, this movie was super refreshing that way. It's a small scale setting that examines the relationships between a close group of friends in a truthful and honest way.
The acting is really spot on and the scenes come across as very natural, which I friggin' love. Nothing is super in your face or annoying, the filmmaker is chill and lets the story and characters breathe.
It's funny, heart-warming, dramatic...it's got all the flavors you want for this type of flick. I found the characters relatable and I was rooting for them to work their problems out.
Also, everyone is pretty damn attractive too, but not annoyingly attractive, which is a bonus. This one actor Dayleigh Nelson, he just has one scene, but he's so hot in it. Yummy. You'll know him when you see him, you'll be like, damn that handsome hunk. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some crazy rock and roll Hollywood stuff happening on that set with that handsome devil.
Anyway, I digress. Check it out, it's up on iTunes and Amazon now I think.
Blood Father (2016)
Unexpected take on a familiar genre which means awesome!
Mel Gibson rules...
The man is a damn fine actor and when he's given a script perfect for him it's just a magical result.
Going into the film I thought I was going to see another clichéd action flick but I was pleasantly surprised.
The characters have time to breathe and develop and the casting is impeccable. All the characters are super likable and the actors really did a great job.
Mel Gibson's character is a bad ass. A true bad ass. Not some dumb wannabe bad ass, but a true bad ass and you're rooting for him the whole time. It's very refreshing to see a well-written bad ass in this age of wussy heroes.
It reminded me of the best of Clint Eastwood and Arnold Schwarzenegger, but it's Mel Gibson, so it's even better.
Action scenes are really well choreographed and there are lots of comedic moments sprinkled throughout.
Throw out your preconceived notions of this film...it's a pleasant surprise.
Also William H. Macy is in it! Schwing!
War on Everyone (2016)
Sublime Masterpiece
I can't believe this movie never had a wide theatrical release in the USA. It's so friggin' awesome.
It's like a blend of Quentin Tarantino and Shane Black but with its own distinct flavor and it is really entertaining. The characters, the dialogue, everything about it is top notch.
It feels like one distinct artistic voice is being heard, and not being interfered by a bunch of dumb producers. I think that's the benefit of it being a British film.
If you liked the Director's previous film "the Guard" or his brother's films "In Bruges" and "Seven Psychopaths" you'll definitely like this.
Soundtrack is dope. DOPE. There's a funny musical leitmotif throughout too which is very enjoyable. It's just a damn good movie.
It has balls too for a modern movie, there are a lot of "Un-PC Culture" moments that felt really good to chuckle at.
I highly recommend it. A refreshing unique film in this day of recycled cinema.
Rogue One (2016)
Uh...calm down folks, it's just OK.
I waited a while to watch this movie because the trailer looked like generic characters doing generic plotty things in a star wars universe.
And that's pretty much what it is.
It LOOKS awesome though. Cinematography is astounding. But after a while, the pretty images don't make up for some hollow characters and a tired old story line.
There is also some nice use of real props and prosthetic costumes which blend well with the CGI.
Again, the craftsmanship is great, they just needed some more of it in the script. But it's Disney right? They know just the right amount to get away with.
However, there is some god awful CGI as well, when they digitally recreate dead actors. It's very unsettling. I'll have nightmares from it now.
The characters have no chemistry. They're just plot devices. No character bonding, no quiet moments between action scenes. All the lovable qualities of the original characters are not apparent.
I guess it's a serious Star Wars movie, but does that make it Star Wars? It didn't really feel like a Star Wars movie.
It is enjoyable though, but it adds nothing new and exciting to the franchise.
Star Trek rules!
Masterminds (2015)
Very funny flick, deserves more credit!
I was a little hesitant watching this film because of all the negative reviews. But Jared Hess, the director of Napoleon Dynamite, along with the comedic talent, made a damn good comedy.
There are a lot of fun gags and ridiculous costumes and it definitely falls in the zany category of comedy films. Zak G carries this film and the supporting cast were all excellent.
There's also a few gross-out moments that give the film a well-balanced comedic palate.
I'm surprised it's rated so lowly. This film might not be for everyone, but it's very funny and deserves much more love.
Maybe if you're a struggling Marxist it might not be your cup of tea, but if you just want some good ol' laughs I highly recommend it. Actually, you must watch it, it's based on a true story and provides a nice history lesson too.
Go watch it now!
