Gerald's Game (2017)
Among the Best
One doesn't have to be a hard core King fan to appreciate this movie. But it helps. There are references almost within references to so much of the King universe ('all things serve the Beam'; DC of the same named novel). However, this is a stand-alone story of a woman coming to terms with... well, just so much, and this tale is well served by the screenwriters and the director.
The performances, especially those of Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood are, to put it mildly, stunning.
See this movie. Just plonk down, call it up on Netflix, and watch it. You will be doing yourself a favor.
Stay Close (2021)
The REVEAL at the end was GREAT!
I feel sorry for the poor dear who didn't stick this series out to the end. What a whipper of a twist!! Most excellent.
The story was well thought out, and, as Mr. Chandler used to say, once revealed the ending will have had many clues sprinkled throughout the tale. This will cause the reader to smack herself in the forehead and say, "Yes! That was a clue! A big honkin' clue! Why didn't I see that? And look, there's another one!!"
I did think perhaps that the one enormous plot hole would have left a bitter taste, but no: they came back and filled that plot hole perfectly.
I liked it. Yessir.
Southland (2009)
This Show!!
I actually loved this show, and was SPOILER ALERT!!! 8 YEAR OLD SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
extremely disappointed at it's demise. I recognized Cudlitz from a BTVS ep called "The Zeppo" and was thrilled to see him on TWD but that didn't assuage my sadness over the show being cancelled/self cancelled, whatever.
I miss those people.
The Walking Dead (2010)
SPOILER ALERT: The First Show of Season 7
Remember: SPOILERS AHEAD.
HORRIFICALLY disappointed. Nay, FURIOUS. How DARE they kill Glenn that way?? For Goddess's sake! The man saved HOW many people? Maggie? Nicholas (who he should have shot in the leg, like Otis and Shane, and left for the dead as a midday snack)? Rick? Lori? Sasha? The list goes on. If they HAD to kill him, he should at the very least died a hero's death- saving someone. Negan goes to Eugene or Sasha or Rosita or, the best would have been Maggie and threatens to bash and smash a la Abe, and Glenn stands up for that person. THAT I would have accepted. A heroic death. Giving his life for someone else. Lord, just from a story telling point of view! It's right there! Instead we get poor Glenn, rising for the last time, with his left eye ludicrously bulging out like some lame make-up job from a C- horror movie from 1952. Ya screwed the pooch, Kirkman and Gimple and Huth and every other producer/writer on this show. You've lost two very obsessed viewers in this house.
The Walking Dead: The Day Will Come When You Won't Be (2016)
Season 7 First Show: SPOILER ALERT!!!
SPOILER ALERT OF EPIC PROPORTIONS!!!
The reason I (and my hubs) felt that the rug was snapped from under our feet was Glenn. He was given a fool's death. Glenn, shaped and guided by the miraculous acting of Steven Yeun, was amazing. Glenn was brave. Glenn was strong. Glenn was chivalrous, to female or male. Glenn was a hero. So Glenn deserved a hero's death. Instead? They decide to bash him in the head. They decide to have him sit up, with his eye bulging ludicrously out from it's socket. It looked as bad as some of the hideously bad make-up jobs from the original "Time Machine". It was embarrassing. It was unnecessary. But if it's what they wanted, to kill Glenn, Glenn should have died a hero's death. Standing in front of another of the group, Carl or Michonne, or Sasha or Eugene, getting in between them and Negan. He should have died in the act of protecting someone else. Especially Maggie. This death was an assault on the deep feelings that we have developed for the character Steven Yeun brought to life. I am so sorry, Steven. It should never have ended this way, and the show-runners, producers, writers, directors should all be ashamed of themselves.
Saving Mr. Banks (2013)
possible Spoiler
I am stunned that no one has mentioned Colin Farrell. I have never seen him so... wonderful. Alas, as soon as I saw the character, I told the hubs, "Alky". That would explain why she was the way she was. I was then prepared to dismiss the movie and watch something else. However, ET and Tom Hanks brought me in a bit more. Then, the flashbacks brought me even closer. Then, Colin Farrell suckered me in completely. I was so caught up in the sure and certain knowledge that Mrs. Travers daddy was going to die that I had to keep watching. And "Feed the Birds": knowing that Mr. Disney went the the Motion Picture Home in Woodland Hills, where Ms. Darwell was housed in her dotage,in order to give her her last hurrah in the biz was wondrous. And I even exed out the fact that Disney was an anti-semitic, anti-union boor. My father was his CPA, and when the park opened, our family was invited to DL and given a fantastic "behind the scenes" tour. We met Mr. Disney in his office, and he got on his knees to say hello to me and my brother, give us a hug and kissed my cheek. Everything was going along really well, until we went "behind" the scene at the jungle ride, and my bro and I were standing on one of the high banks of the "river". The photog told us to step back a little, and next thing I knew, I was tumbling into the killer hippo-filled stinky water, and a guide from one of the boats had jumped in to rescue me. No, really. But Colin Farrell: bravo times a whole bunch. And the Aunt (actress from "6 Feet Under" AND Australian) came to help, with her carpet bag and pots of plants and pineapple and "Spit spot!". Just a great movie. I NEVER thought I'd sit there and cry, for Jane Darwell and Pamela (Helen Goff) Travers, and Colin Farrell's performance. It was like a fantastic, no-calorie meal. See it!
Chrisley Knows Best (2014)
Ucccchhhhh
SOILER ALERT. No, really. Soiler. Because you'll want to take a shower seconds after watching this drivel. But, SPOILER alert, as well.
Does no one else realize that this pompous, "holier than thou" despot is gay? In fact, he is a shame to the gay populace. His strictures are ludicrous. They are hypocritical. They are hilarious, once you realize, these people are REAL. They are no different from Jim Baker. Baker and his make-up caked monstrosity of a wife stole money from their "congregation" by simply asking for it. How they got tripped up? By putting some of this "money for Jay-Zuss!" toward an air conditioner for their dog house! No kidding! Then along comes this blob, Chrisley, telling us that "Homo's will burn!" and then holding up his hands, shrieking like... well, a woman, when his child frightens him with a fake snake. His accent could be passed off as Southern, but believe me, I know Southern, and his accent is GAY Southern. The fact that he reproaches others for being what they were born to be is sickening. He will rot in hell because of his love of condemning others on the lives they live, because THEY WERE BORN THAT WAY.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Last Episode Season 4, 6/15/2014
Wow. Just... wow. The ONLY thing I knew for sure (SPOILER ALERT!!) was that Tyrion would not die, and Jamie would be the one who saved him. And, when Tyrion killed Shea in the 'Hand's bedroom, I said to the hubs, "Where's Tywinn? Taking a sh*t?" Ha ha!! I am oh so pleased with this final episode of this season, and I cannot wait to find out precisely how Cirsei will react in the morning to find Daddy dead, and precisely what the little man taking care of Mountain (damned SOB didn't die??? That ticked me off) means by, if he survives, "He might not be the same." What, he'll don a tutu and do "Swan Lake"?? And that Lord Varys...
Alas, the thing that did break my heart was Dany having to put her babies in chains. She will probably have to kill the remaining free baby. Such is life when one wants to be Queen, yet have no slaves. Doesn't work.
I loved it, all, regardless.
The Walking Dead: After (2014)
Love it!
After the first episode (the real first episode), I was so stunned that they killed the horsie? I quit watching. But, something drew me back. I don't remember. What it was? Nope. Don't remember. But this show has me utterly gob-smacked, at times. When Carol answered Rick's question, "Did you kill Karen and David?" and she, matter of factly, holding that empty water container, "Yes" and then went on her way? I fell off the sofa. The hubs and I were shocked. First, that she did it. Second, the forthrightness with which she admitted it. The hubs was perplexed as to how Rick sussed it out. I had to remind him that this was Rick's first actual crime he could investigate, since Z- Day. He looked at the print on the door, saw it was small, knew the kids couldn't have had the power to drag dead bodies. Voila, my dear Watson. When all other information is excluded, the remaining one, however implausible, must be the answer. Or something like that. God, I LOVE this show!!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Shadow (2000)
Shadow Actress "Sandy"
Did anyone else notice that the she-vamp character, who comes on to Riley in Willy's Bar, is the same actress from "Dopplegangland"? That was when Willow's vamp double appears. Anya talks Willow into helping her with a spell. The spell is to get Anya's vengeance necklace back. Instead, they bring Willow's alternate dimension self. And she's a vamp. She collects a couple of uber-vamps to be her "gang". They go into the Bronze, and the first person VampWillow approaches a young woman, sitting alone at a table. She asks her name, and the girl says "Sandy".
The girl in the "Shadow" episode coming on to Riley IS the same actress and says her name is Sandy, so was it just me who noticed that? Anyone?
Burn Notice (2007)
Is It Over? Possible SPOILER Alert
I got sucked into this because of Campbell. I've had a fan-crush on him. For years back. Since "Brisco County". And the "Evil Dead" movies. Then the hubs and I watched regularly for two years. After that, it became "Oh, crap, it's the same story as last week, just different actors!"
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
If it's over, good. It was time to tip their hats and move on. I have no idea what Donovan does now. He's a good actor and a funny guy. (But what the hell happened to Fiona? She changed her hair colour. The make-up people must have hated her. In that last season, she looked like 2 miles of very skinny pot-hole-filled road. But I did learn something from those incessant "Musings from Michael" voiceovers. "The areas between houses and hotel corridors are also called 'fatal funnels': they'll get you killed almost every time.'" I will remember that, for when I am on the run from the Mossad or KGB.
It could happen.
Doc Martin (2004)
The Cloughs
Things were going swimmingly. This show had humour. It had heart. It had more than eccentric characters. It had a fantastic view of the sea. It had marvellous plot lines. It had Auntie Joan. And, of course, the dog. Well, the dogs.
And then came the episode with the crazy guy who tags along with Louisa's father Terry. Part two of that episode, I should say. The nutty "colonel" is defending his beloved "cloughs", part raven, part puffin (in my opinion). Large, black birds with bright orange bills. Bert Large has, once again, seen the cloughs as a chance to make money. Louisa's dad arrives, with nutty guy. Terry wants to rent a boat for the next day. No one will give him one.
Making two long episodes much shorter, the cloughs are made the object of "Ha ha!" ain't it funny that Al Large has picked up (for Terry and crazy guy) a bag of explosives which Doc Martin disposes of by chucking the bag off the cliff... where it lands on the cloughs and blows them up.
Despicable. I was livid. And sad. I really had liked this show, until this abominable moment. Sickening.
I hope everyone associated with this show gets explosive abdominal gushing and never hears the end of it.
Hatfields & McCoys (2012)
Ages of the Old Men
I was most confused about the age of Randall at his death. His tombstone clearly reads that he was born in 1825. Then, they say he died in 1914. At age 79. Huh??? How does 75 plus 14 equal 79?? 89, yes. Even 88, if his birthday was later in that year.
This kind of stuff is what makes me crazy about "historic" pieces. Inevitably someone gets sloppy in the math.
Also, at least 23 years passes, yes? First thing McCoy's wife says to him when he gets back? "Don't spill the seed in me". She's done with the child-bearing. Yet, when the Hatfield's come with Uncle John to burn them out or down or shoot them dead at the site? (Or smack her in the head and she's carted off to a loony bin...) There are YOUNG GIRLS running all over the place!! I mean, little girls, like 8 and 5. McCoy, like the coward he was, ran out the back door. He meets the girls, calls them "Children, where's your ma? Where's (the girl who got shot)?" Obviously these are his children. So.... how'd the seed sneak in there, and how many kids did these people have?? They mowed themselves down in droves. Yet, there always seemed to be 10 more to off. Wow.
That being said, I LOVED this thing!! I know, I'm nuts. (It's just those fairly small things that bug me.)
Costner has never been better. Perhaps because he's best when he's saying as little as possible. Bill Paxton broke my heart. Mare Winningham was dazzling. Miss Pulshiver (sp?)as Rosanna was a delicate gem. The guy who played Johnsey was just enough of a punk and a coward and a drunk to get by without totally loathing him.
You go, Cotton-Top!!!
