After we watched this movie, my wife turned to me to say "it's sort of a Hallmark movie. Pleasant, no surprises". So I'm coining the word; Hall-Malarkey. Playful at times, serious at times, maybe a bit maudlin even. But I'm giving this movie 7 stars. Better than a run of the mill TV movie. Good acting all around, decent script, well filmed, beautiful locations.
Most of the action takes place during a week long group hike of part of the Appalachian Trail. Purists might complain about our hikers not noticing or being aware of the trail blazes. Certainly the leader would have mentioned those. And for seven days, they see no other hikers. Near impossible in Connecticut, where they are. But those points aren't important to the story. Our group of hikers are all adults trying to recharge, refresh or challenge themselves in some way. And largely, mission accomplished, as you can imagine in this sort of movie. The phrase "we all have baggage, we're just looking for matched luggage in a relationship" comes to mind. But without giving any spoilers, Ellie Kemper's character shows tremendous courage at the end of the film. I would give her last scene an 8/10 but the rest of the film is a solid 7/10, full of Hall-Marlarkey, but in a good way.
