Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
MCU is becoming better and better
It was a cool cinematic experience. Mysterio was the right character with a very convincing story after Endgame. It brought up some missing pieces, real issues and also faults in the Avengers and this made MCU even better.
I really liked how this film connected some dots from all the phases so far and for sure it made me wonder what will happen in phase 4. Pretty excited about upcoming films!
It didn't feel like a sequel to Spider-Man, but more like an Endgame epilogue, which is not necessarily something bad given the fact all the films are interconnected. I really liked that the human side of Spider-Man made half of this film, unlike the rest of MCU, where the focus was on the powers within and the moral v immoral issues rather than the social interactions and it was a delight to see the characters evolve on screen in a natural and almost believable way.
All in all, it was way better than I expected and I will definitely watch it again. It is worth it.
Men in Black: International (2019)
I don't hate it, but I don't love it either
Cool cast, OK plot, nice effects. Some subplots could have been developed a bit more...
It was quite enjoyable to watch, I don't think it was a waste of time or money. I recommend watching it, but it lacked its soul and sometimes even the humour. It shows that it is a spin-off.
Yet, if you consider it a stand-alone film, it is really OK to watch. So.... give it a try.
Aladdin (2019)
A timeless story
I didn't have any particular expectations regarding this film, but I was surprised of how good it was. It was so colorful and joyful and it felt like I was a 9 year old watching a tale as old as time.
The cast was marvelous: I liked the fact that they didn't choose overly famous actors - except Will Smith (who was perfect the role). The music was great as well, I believe a series of awards for the soundtrack will soon appear.
What I enjoyed the most the story - besides bringing more modern concepts in mentality and politics, it was great that they filled the empty spots and made the story a bit more convincing and appealing to all kinds of fans and audience. The mix between tradition and progress and first version and the 2019 times only concerning the soundtrack and the ending were very well handled
Although I liked how Jafar was interpreted, they could have made him a tiny bit older.
All in all, a great film and I really am looking forward to watching it again.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
The change that was needed
For sure this finale is what Westeros and the world needed. It is bittersweet, indeed, and it leaves behind a sour feeling of emptiness. Yet, it reminds us of one of the most important things in life: the power of free will and freedom. It is the end of an era, yet the story of Westeros is just beginning. The old ways are left behind and step by step they move forward to a better world.
It is no wonder how Game of Thrones ended, it is supposed to end like this. It didn't make sense at the beginning for sure and I was also a bit disappointed of some of the conclusions, yet, after watching again certain scenes, it does make sense. The story of GoT is about transition - from the old ways to a new era of spring and a step towards democracy. They are not there yet, but at least the idea has been implanted and will grow.
Nothing was really pointless and no character was misused. Each of them had a role that was delivered very well. You could feel the stubbornness to continue a misunderstood role in the world, the fear of loss and change, the lack of courage to take responsibility for the new world, the acceptance of the truth in front of the eyes and real justice. There are lessons to learn here.
Yet, the final episode was rushed. It could have been done better in a two part finale: the new world introduced at the beginning of the episode should have been explored better and more in depth in order to justify the outcome.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Loved it!
I loved it! It was funny and witty and had all the ingredients to make this one of the best Marvel films so far.
It was not a perfect film, as some parts were a bit clichéic and a few lines were there just to fill the time and did nothing good for the film. Yet, the characters are better shaped than in the previous film, their inner side is shown to the public so well it is really impossible not to like them even more and overall, the directing and editing were right on spot.
I enjoyed the carousel of feelings I had during this film. And the background music/soundtrack was perfectly in sync with them.
It is worth watching the Guardians of the Galaxy 2! I will probably watch it again pretty soon. :)
The Great Wall (2016)
Not a masterpiece for sure, yet enjoyable
If you don't have any expectations, this film might surprise you a bit. I really liked the special effects, even if I started laughing when I first saw the antagonists.
Most scenes between battles were quite awkward, full of clichés. Yet, once the battle begins, any cliché this film might have is really fun to watch and not at all annoying.
What I hated the most was the unfortunate English accent... used during the Song dynasty (960-1279).
Overall, the plot is quite linear and simple and is centered around one important moment. Character development was welcoming, but not impressive and definitely not unexpected. The best part was not fulfilling the love sub-plot, even though I half expected this and I would have been really disappointed if it had happened.
Anyway, it was an enjoyable film with better 3D effects than I expected and many other films, so give it a try. But be open minded and admire what is to be admired.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
It could have been a masterpiece!
I have just watched it and I still can't shake off the feeling that something isn't right with the film. It wasn't quite a disappointment. This film actually had the potential to be a masterpiece. Yet, the directing and the editing weren't the best. I think Snyder got a bit too enthusiastic with the plot and made it quite confusing. I felt like I was watching several different films into one with no essence. He should have stuck to one idea and built the entire film around it without offering too many Easter eggs. Yet, I do appreciate the cameos and all the parts which offer a slight idea about what the future films will be like.
I really enjoyed the performances of Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot and I believe they are definitely the right choice to play Batman and Wonder Woman. To be frank, I expected the worst, yet I was proved wrong. I really cannot imagine a better Wonder Woman and this Batman is one of my top 3 now.
Another aspect worth praising is Jesse Eisenberg's performance as Lex Luthor. It was unexpected and exciting to watch him.
Overall, the film is not a perfect 10, yet, it is one worth watching. It can surprise you.
I am really looking forward to the next ones. :D
