Paper Girls (2022)
nice surprise
Main problem of the series is the first episode which is the worst of the season and might discourage some but it gets a lot better after E1.
This show feels to me like a clone between Utopia and Stranger Things. Its not perfect but it was better than Stranger Things at least better than S2-4 maybe not S1.
Its not an action show its more character driven like Utopia but less weird.
I cannot compare it to the graphic novel maybe thats even better but i really enjoyed this season especially after a lame E1.
Song to Song (2017)
Masterpiece
Terence Malick is a genius.
I still think The Thin Red Line is his best movie but Knight of Cups and Song to Song are very close.
He is at best when he keeps the esotheric religious nonsense to a minimum and also lets loose of subtext and story. Whats left is an artistic description of human nature that is more accurate than any rational story could be.
For me it is like a dance it makes you understand by feeling it ...no rigid story or understanding necessary and also in the end not the same meaning for everyone.
Movies like this are not entertainment they are art and that is why Terence Malick will be still famous long after humanity doesn't care about Steven Spielberg etc...
Arrival (2016)
SF Masterpiece
I watched Arrival two times and the second time was even better than the first. With all the knowledge about the story line you can see how great Arrival really is. Everything fits perfect together and you realize how much you missed because you assumed some kind of linear time line. A truly non-linear (or circular) time line is what will also solve all your logic problems (especially the Chinese general).
That said every movie messing up with time is basically fiction. To our current knowledge the only existing time is present. Past is a shadow of a time once existed heavily processed and manipulated by the human brain and future is basically the same ... a prediction based on the past. Every time you remember an event in you past your brain will overwrite this event with the copy you just remembered so most of the time you remember a copy of a copy of a copy etc ... of your past. If you want to enjoy this movie you have to accept something that seems unreal to us but that's the definition of SF.
Everything about this movie is great ... acting, music, sound, editing, visuals, story. Imho it is the best Hollywood movie 2016 and it will become a SF classic. Watch it in cinema because directing, cinematography and sound are exceptional and build an unique atmosphere comparable to Fincher or Mann movies.
Toni Erdmann (2016)
brilliant hilarious drama
This movie is one if this rare occasions that gives you the sensation you saw something very special today. It has some kind of unique comedy status like Monty Python or Bill Murray. If you think about a serious Monty Python or a more hilarious Broken Flowers you might come close to this movie.
The main theme is loneliness. A father realizes that his daughter is not happy even though she has a great career and pretends to be fine. So he tries to bring joy back in her life.
The acting is brilliant both Toni and Ines are as authentic as possible. Some scenes were so funny that i basically cried tears of joy. Especially the nude party is so ridiculous ... its actually one of best scenes i ever saw in cinema.
This is a great and very unique movie and i want to thank Maren Ade for this piece of art. Imho the best German comedy ever made. 10/10
Warcraft (2016)
for fans great for anyone else maybe average
First of all don't believe the critics they are way to harsh with this movie. Most of them are from old men with art-house taste they will destroy every cgi movie they might even give -points for color movies.
For me the experience was comparable to LotR. I don't see much of a quality difference between this movie and the first LotR. If you're not in to fantasy you might hate it because there is a lot of magic, demons, teleporting etc ... but if you like the genre you will enjoy this movie. If you are an Warcraft fan you will love it. It's by far the best cinematic Blizzard ever made.
The story is not bad actually i like it more than SW or LotR which are IMHO simpler and more one sided. You don't have to chose between horde or alliance both are good and bad. Actually the character the audience will like most might be Durotan even if you are alliance. The CGI is mostly great but sometimes when there is a lot of fast movement it gets blurry. Acting is average while Lothar, Garona and the CGI-Orcs are quite good Medhiv and King Lane are not.
As a fan i enjoyed it 8/10.
X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
enjoyable but not great
I can understand both the haters and the fanboys because the movie is both good and bad depending on what's important to yourself. There are three aspects that are awful dialogues (sometimes quite cheesy and dull), story (main story of this film) and Apokalypse. There is some great stuff too entertainment, atmosphere and story (x-men universe related).
This makes Apokalypse pretty bad as a standalone movie but it can be a enjoyable movie if like the X-men. Its definitely not the best X-men movie i would rank the X-men movies like X-men2 > First Class > Days of Future Past > Apocalypse > Last Stand > X-Men1.
Watch this Movie if you know all the other X-men because it connects the old and new movies very nice together or if you just want some action, fun and entertainment. If you expect a complex, meaningful or original story save your money.
The Revenant (2015)
awful
I was utterly disappointed with this movie. I couldn't imagine Alejandro Inarritu making such a bad film. I had the impression he wanted to win another Oscar and tried way to hard to put everything in this movie what he thinks the academy wants. His movies seem to get more and more some kind of strange spiritual parts that i cant relate with.
All other movies he made are at least good (Birdman ...) and two are great (Babel and Amores Peros) but this one was plain bad in my opinion. Birdman wasn't the best film last year but it was cool in its strange way with some great dialogs and only few flaws. The Revenant is just one big flaw ... he tried so hard to make the movie look realistic but completely forgot to do the same with the screenplay. The story is very simple and artificial it reminded me of bad TV shows. I think the basis for the screenplay was "how do i get another Oscar" not "i have this great story to tell".
The overall acting is very good with Tom Hardy being great. However Leonardo DiCaprio had better performances (Revolutionary Road) but still plays at a high level like he always does. The movie is well made and well acted but the story is just a big fail IMHO ... so big i can't give any points for this one.
Umimachi Diary (2015)
loved it !
This movie is 128 minutes long and at the end i was hoping it could go on for two more hours. For me it is the essence of what cinema should be. Great story real characters and real life ! Just a few days before i was watching SW7 and thought it was an OK movie but while watching "our little sister" i was realizing how much better cinema can be and how bad most Hollywood blockbusters really are. I know its like comparing a Michelin star cook to Mc Donald's but when you tasted both you realize one is art and one is fast food. One you eat because you're hungry (bored) and one because it tastes great. This movie is art because it touches you in a special way ... not you ego but your humanity.
Compared to Hirokazu Koreeda previous movie "like father like son" the story is very loose sometime you even think there is none. You also get tricked by the expectations other movies force you to have by repeating the same motives over and over again. I'm not sure if this is intentional or the movie is just so different.
Like most Japanese or Asian movies there is some stuff that could be a little bit to slapstick and melodramatic for western viewers but that's a very small price to pay.
If you don't count anime "our little sister" makes it in my top 5 Asian movies of all time. I highly recommend it.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Entertaining
I'm not a big fan of the old E4-6 movies and i don't hate E1-3 as much as most do. Except of E1 all SW movies including E7 are on the same level for me.
After all the great reviews i was a little bit disappointed. Yeah its an OK or good movie but nothing mind-blowing or special or new. Even the recycled Avatar story is more complex and inventive than E7. The things you will get in cinema watching E7 are action (especially second half), entertainment, jokes (some witty some lame) and a lot of nostalgia. What you will miss is originality and any kind of risk taking on any level (writing, directing etc...). The biggest and and maybe only new thing is a female leading character and that would have been a shocker in the '90s but after Hunger Games and countless other new movies with adequate female contribution it's basically standard but still refreshing. There are some logic holes (errors) but they don't interfere much with your viewing experience or even destroy it (like Jurassic World did).
So after all i enjoyed E7 especially the first part before they arrive at the resistance base. The second part was very one dimensional and lost some drive even if action was at maximum the movie stopped catching me sometimes. I would have given the first Part 8 points but the second part is only 4 for me so i'll make it 6. E7 won't make my top20 this year but it was an entertaining experience that i would recommend especially if you are a fan of E4-6.
Yeah and BB-8 is so cute ....
Jurassic World (2015)
expected much more
First all the science and biochemistry in this movie is ridiculous but that's something you would expect. Now some things that are bad you wouldn't expect. The screenplay/writing is awful. Even for a Hollywood blockbuster it's uninspired and dull. There are also some very big logic holes. For example they use heat detection for the Indominus Rex even knowing he might be able to control his temperature. Also why should stealth be of any use for an IR ? Two kids repairing a 20 year old Jeep ... for real ? Also the music was very very bad. It was pushy and cheesy.
I still give 3 stars because there were some funny moments the main characters were good and for the cgi ...
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
way better than the original
David Fincher is one of my favorite directors and he thrilled me again with this one. In my opinion this movie is even better than the book (in some parts) and much better than the original movie.
some reasons why: - Lisbeth is in the focus of Fincher interpretation. She is this interesting character you know from the book while the original movie is more about Mikael.
- Rooney Mara is an unbelievable Lisbeth ... breathtaking
- the end makes more sense ... i hated this man vs man fight at the end of the original movie ... Finchers version is much better and more realistic
- plot change at the end (no farm in Australia etc ...) i liked this one better
I don't want to say the original movie was bad actually it was very good (because Stieg Larssons novel is very good) but Finchers version is even better ... i can't wait to see the next parts.
