Phone Booth (2002)
Alot better than it looked
I was reluctant to see this film the first time i had the oppritiunity to watch it, mainly because of the trailers inability to grasp my attention. The concept of a man stuck in a phone booth seemed shallow to me.
however....
I did eventually watch it, and I have to say that I was tottaly impressed. In short, it was alot better than it looked. The film turned out to be a gripping suspense thriller, and in no way shallow. The caller turned out to be a beter antagonist than I could have imagined, and Collin Ferrel delivers a powerful performance as he is whittlled down by the all knowing Caller.
The only negative points are the over use of curse words, and the occational continuity problem (you'll notice it, trust me) But those points aside, this movie is without a doubt a must see.
9/10
Chaempieon (2002)
Pretty good movie
Although i do not speak Korean, I had an opportunity to view this movie while taking a class at my school. It concerns the life and trials of boxer Kim, Deuk-Gu, in and out of the ring. I thought this movie had a lot of passion behind it, the characters where well developed (especially the coach) and the story was very good. The end was my favorite part (as insulting as that sounds,) with his son seeing his ghost in the gym. I fell this was an overall success, with good writing, and few things to complain about, aside from the fact i had to read all the dialogue. I recommend this to anyone, Korean or not.
Oasiseu (2002)
Wonderful movie
I get to see a Korean Movie now and then, and, even though i didnt understand a word of dialogue in this film, it was easy to tell what was going on. Oasis is the tale of a mentally disabled man who has recently been released from prison. Shortly after leaving, he attempts to rape a young physically disabled woman in her apartment. He comes to his senses, and apologizes later, and forms a powerful bond of understanding. while to most americans, Gong- Ju's fantasies might seem a little...odd (the dancing woman and the elephant is a perfect example,) it just goes to show that our cinema has lost most (if not all) heart. I would strongly urge anyone who is into Korean cinema to watch this film, it is a truly touching experience.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)
Masterfully Done
A fantastic acomplishment in the world of gaming, i say that Metal
Gear solid 2, sons of liberty is a wonderful insight on counterterror and the pain that both sides feel. The story, although complex (and sometimes downright silly,) is gripping, and portrays a frightening image of how our lives could be, censored by an emotionless machine. In closing, i recomend this title, or the improved Substance version to anyone who is into excellent character development, storyline, graphics and cinematic quality.
