The Truth About Average Guys (2009)
great little indie comedy
A friend of mine saw this film at the 2009 Trail Dance Film Festival (where the film won "Best Comedy" and "Best of Festival"). He bought a copy of the film after the screening, and got it signed by filmmakers and stars of the film Jason Schaver and Ken Gayton. He said "you have to watch this!!!". So I did, and I must say I was really impressed. After the film he told me that the budget was only $5000. I could not believe it. I was thinking more along the lines of $50,000 or something.
This film had me in stitches. As "Troy", Schaver was reminiscent of a young Jack Black. And Gayton brings to mind someone like Justin Long, but with a little more range and humor (long seems to play the same character in every film). And I thought all the guy friends were hilarious. The music in the film was also quite good. Most low budget indies have horrible music, but the music in this film really added to it.
I am so glad to see that they got a distribution deal for this film. I definitely recommend that everyone go out and pick up a copy. The bonus features alone are worth the money. It's already on netflix and blockbuster.com I cannot wait to see what these two talented guys do next. They did a lot with a little and it shows.
Taking Chances (2009)
eh
I rented this movie because it had Justin Long in it. I'm normally a fan of his. But no matter how much of a fan I am of his, this story was incredibly unfunny. I did enjoy Rob Corddry's performance, but that was not enough to save this from being a long boring film.
As usual, Emmanuelle Chriqui was stunning to look at. I think she has solid acting chops as well, but her character just wasn't likable at all once you find out she's cheating with the mayor. And it was a bit unbelievable that the mayor's wife still wanted to help her after finding out.
I need to stop renting movies I've never heard of just b/c Justin Long is in them (he was in "Just Add Water" as well, and that was another awful movie). I don't know why he does films like those. Wanting "indie cred" is fine, but he needs to pick scripts that are actually interesting or entertaining. This film was neither.
Rockabilly Baby (2009)
A couple of things...
First off, I want to let everyone know that "Starwish" is actually Ken Farmer, so you can pretty much ignore that review. Just click on "starwish" and then click on "message board profile" and it will take you to his message board history. From here you can see his post in "contributor help" with a thread called "name corrections" which is clearly signed KEN FARMER. *** Now Mr. Farmer says that review was sent to him. Apparently TV/FILM Actor Alex Cord couldn't post his own review of the film. Pretty fishy to me.
So keep that in mind while reading "starwish's" review of the film. Especially the part where he is "riveted" and "on the edge of his seat"(like someone who had never seen the film before), or the part where he says "if the director had the world to choose from...." I suppose I should write a review of the film. How about a review from someone that isn't THE DIRECTOR OF THE FILM? There's a reason this film has a rating of 2.6 and it's because it's a horrible film.
It's just two to three people in a dressing room reminiscing about the past and arguing about the future. I think indiefan77 hit the nail pretty much on the head with his review. I too kept wondering "wow, is the whole movie going to take place in that dressing room?". And I didn't really see the point why his sister wanted him to come home just before he's about to make it big.
And the whole thing at the end where "he" might be gay was completely unnecessary. Just came out of nowhere and would have ruined this film if it had not already ruined itself.
bad movie (good acting though) but no amount of "good acting" could have saved this turdfest. There is a reason why Mr. Farmer is the only one writing a good review for this film.
