Citadel (2023)
Poor writing mixed with wooden acting
Entirely forgettable show not worth your time.
Cringe writing and dialogue, which is then played out by two of the most unrelatable, unemotional and wooden leads I've seen in a long, long time. You could dress Madden in IKEA rugs and he'd be playing a stark as there's not a noticeable difference in character, and I don't know how Chopra Jonas got this role, but must know the right people. Both have as much emotional range as a.brick, and that's being kind to bricks.
You get a bonus star for getting Tucci to appear on screen in this trash. You must have some good dirt on him...
Avoid. Your time is best spent doing anything else.
Taylor Tomlinson: Look at You (2022)
Gave it 30 minutes, about 28 minutes too long...
This is obviously comedy for a generation of wokeness. Pretty bizarre to see. Nearly all first 30 minutes was spent on mental health issues and just came across as self absorbed and not particularly funny. Amazing to see her ask who had a therapist and 75% of the audience cheering like it's a great achievement, likewise when she asks about who's on antidepressants. Perhaps that's the target audience and why they find it funny. Personally, I think there's a ton of comics that are funnier and worth spending time watching...
Murder at the Cottage: The Search for Justice for Sophie (2021)
Save yourself the time and watch the Netflix doco
Watching both the Netflix documentary and this one, it's easy to see which is more focused on fact and letting people, and the story, speak for themselves.
Watching the first five minutes of this alone, you can see how much Jim Sheridan allows his ego and droll opinion to influence his efforts to tell HIS story, not THE story. Oh, and if you didn't know Jim was a 6 time Oscar nominated filmmaker, you will, after being informed very first thing in the film. And in every review. And every summary of the series. And he's almost the first thing on camera, before the story. It's bizzarely strange how it all seems like a self promotional film at times...
His narration and conclusions are mind numbing and baffling to the point of questioning his judgement and mental state. If he truly spent 12 years making this, one might conclude he allowed himself to get too close to the matter (and some individuals) and couldn't see the forest through the (Xmas) trees...
The Man in the High Castle (2015)
Brilliant show that crashes and burns in final 2 seasons
I've never been so disappointed in the ending of a series. First 2 seasons were done amazingly well and created a dystopian world based on great characters and interesting storyline.
Its almost like the PC Brigade took over from Season 3, and the story becomes disjointed, convoluted and focuses on inclusive lifestyles, which not only make no sense to the storyline, but leads nowhere too. It drives nothing further and just feels like the show treads water. It goes downhill so badly its hard to believe its the same show.
After that, season 4 was bordering on the ridiculous but was almost a welcome relief to put the show out of its misery...
Tenet (2020)
Highbrow buddy cop story done good... Genius.
Back to the future 2 meets edge of tomorrow, so basically time cop buddy flick made high brow.
Could have done with a laugh track.
Needed more Biff Tannen, less Doc Brown.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
My God, what a convoluted, steaming pile of crap
I wanted to like this movie. I had high hopes for it with JJ at the helm.
But my god, what a complete and utter failure of a way to end a franchise.
So much lazy writing,
Wooden acting,
poor editing & lack of cohesion,
A story that makes about as much sense as jamming ones head in a car door.
Felt absolutely nothing for any of the characters, they were so poorly written.
This could have been done so much better.
It's turned away from what could have been a great movie,
and replaced it with a big ball of cheese.
At times they have tried to be:
Game of Thrones (the speech),
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (you'll see it),
Marvel movies (hawkeye).
It's beyond ridiculous.
So much so, I did a haiku:
Rise did Skywalker
Though like a crappy souffle'
Fell with Fanboys' tears.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Utter Crap
Save yourself the time, this movie is entirely trash. Acting, sets, costumes, everything just seems B Grade. Easily the worst movie I've seen in 2020.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
I wanted to love this movie....
It had all the ingredients for a cult classic.
Great director,
Great actors,
Quirky script,
Oddball humour,
Zombies.
Other than a few chuckles, the rest of the time I was waiting for the film to take off, to do anything, really.
But it didn't.
First film in a long time where it made me question watching a film, and the myriad of other things I could have been doing with my life rather than wasting 2 hours of it on this disappointment.
I'm not sure how this gets funded, made and then distributed. Did no one check this along the way and have the decency to call it for what it was. A complete and utter waste of everyone's time...
I give it a second star only out of respect to Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton, they deserve better...
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
What a waste of 2 hours...
The worst movie in the X-Men lineup. Sat through near 2 hours waiting to be entertained. Didn't happen.
Sophie Turners lead character is dull and wooden. Possibly the most beige acting I've seen in a big budget movie. I mean, even her hand movements seemed forced. When she was portraying power and throwing people around the world with her cosmic force, it felt more like she was inspecting her nails wistfully.
It's almost like watching Sansa Stark in jeans. About the same range. You could fill the rest of the cast with Oscar winners, and this drab story and lead would make them seem devoid of talent as well.
If this is how the X-Men (or X-Women, sigh) go out, then its with a barely audible whimper...if anything this movie proves it's the right time.
The Great Hack (2019)
Interesting watch, but ultimately could have been much more...
Engrossing film, and reveals the extent of data scraping that is going on in today's world that is then being used for nefarious purposes.
Interesting to see how it all works, but my beef with the flick is the one-sided view of one of the main characters in Kaiser.
Plain to see that this is a person with little to no moral compass, that happily did what she did to hobnob and feel important/to make an impact. When it was apparent that the sky was falling, she happily turned "whistleblower" and spilled everything she could on operations. I failed to see her show any remorse for the work she did in setting up the whole infrastructure over 3.5+ years. Yet throughout the film she is portrayed as being free from blame and just a source of information, when she clearly sold her soul to make money and for other purposes known only to her. The film-makers almost portray her as a victim and instead of asking the hard questions, appear to be content to play best friend.
The doco could have been much more impactful and meaningful if they had retained independence and reported as such, but all in all a worthwhile watch.
Anthony Jeselnik: Fire in the Maternity Ward (2019)
Funny for first 30 seconds, then you realise there's 40 minutes left of the same...
I don't get it, perhaps the people in his audience are easily amused, dimwitted or have never listened to edgy comedy. Its like listening to a laugh track. People even laughing at points that aren't meant to be laughed at. "Listen to this", laughter...go figure...
This is 10 second jokes with an "edgy" twist, for 40 minutes.
It's grating after 3 minutes, I gave it 15 to see if it improves.
It doesn't. And it's not edgy, just offbeat.
How this guy gets specials is beyond me. His audience must be very special.
Kevin Hart: What Now? (2016)
Quite possibly the worst stand up DVD I have ever seen
Watched the first 20 minutes of this. Want those 20 minutes back. Mundane, boring and lacking in laughs to the point where I would feel embarrassed for the guy if it wasn't so bad...
How does someone lacking in talent get so far and put on such a big production...baffling. I think he spent more time on organising the props and setup of the show than actually writing material.
Avoid. Shizen.
Chappie (2015)
Wow...how this has rated a 7 I'll never know...
I'm having a lot of trouble understanding how this steaming pile of a movie has rated anywhere above a 5...and that's being generous.
I like Dev Patel and Hugh Jackman as actors, but this movie proves the importance of scriptwriting, or lack thereof. When given a worthless, heartless and useless script, even good actors can fail miserably in getting the audience to feel for them and connect with the movie. Name me a movie where Jackman was as wasted as this? The lead actors were one-dimensional and wasted in their roles, and the South African actors themselves felt like parodies, the acting was so over the top and laughable.
Don't even get me started on Shitelo Copley. This man has, in my view, ruined every movie he's been in after District 9, bar 'The A Team', which isn't saying much. He's taken it to new heights in this flick, ruining a movie without actually being seen in the thing! His over the top, manic, whining, thick as mud South African accent had me cringing throughout. In all honesty, I was thinking if I'd made Chappie the robot, I would have taken my flash drive and put Revo uninstaller on it for a one time hard-drive scrubbing mission.
Wow, so bad you'd probably have to be under 15 (either age or IQ, take your pick)to rate it higher than 5. Hopefully I can save someone from wasting over an hour of their life on this drivel...look elsewhere for entertainment and don't waste more of your time on this thing...
Road (2014)
Amazing and Inspirational...
I'm by no means a fan of bikes or road racing, but seeing the high reviews for this movie got me intrigued. I'm very glad I watched this doco, in one word, inspirational.
It's been a while since a piece of film has moved me, and it's just the basics of human emotion and the revelation of the amazing spirit of the people in this film that speak a real, undeniable truth.
Great story, great telling, amazing footage and wow, what an amazing family. They obviously live for this, and it shows through with raw emotion, honesty and moments that are genuine and heartfelt.
The footage is spectacular, with some passage just having me shaking my head in disbelief. It's amazing what some people can push themselves to do.
Do yourself a favour and watch this flick.
