Survival of the Dead (2009)
Fans of the original trilogy beware
I did not like this movie.....at all. I did not like Diary and Land was...well okay. I think the thing that disappoints me the most is that the original trilogy is so good. Now as I already said, I did not like Diary. So considering that this was a technically constituted as a continuation ruined it for me from the start. I think the biggest problem with this film is it lacks (just like the other two) the one thing that made George's original 3 so creepy....an impending sense of doom. To sum it up, you always knew that the characters (in the original trio) were f#@ked some way or another. Forget the social commentaries and forget the plot. That is what made his original trio scary. Okay I know this film has some bad CGI, bad acting, plot holes, crappy music, etc. etc. But when you think about it, his original 3 kind of did too. It was the atmosphere that made it creepy and unsettling. This film has no atmosphere.
This is the type of movie I would have on just to have on. Everything felt forced and thrown together. I think George is just making movies to make movies now. I think he is experimenting with new techniques and loosing some good fans (the most hardcore ones) along the way. Sorry George but I've lost all respect for you as a film maker.
Diary of the Dead (2007)
George please stop this nonsense
I was 7 years old the first time watched Night of The Living Dead. I watched it at my neighbor's house and for some reason I was hooked. I remember begging my dad to buy it for me. Finally he gave in and searched our attic only to find an old copy on VHS. About a year later I watched the 1990 remake (courtesy of West Coast Video). From there I watched "Dawn" and "Day" some where around the age of 10-11. Needless to say I was absolutely hooked.
I could hardly believe my eyes and ears when I heard George was making Land. It seemed to good to be true that I going to watch an official George Romero Living Dead film at the movies. I felt like I was witnessing movie history. However, Come July 2005, I was crushed with the final result. I won't even go into detail. That is truly how bad it is. Upon hearing about, Diary I was still in high hopes that George would redeem himself. I remember renting it from block buster and watching it with my girl friend at the time. Even from the very start of the film (when the paramedic kicks the zombie), I thought to myself "Oh please no not again". Sure enough by the end I was crushed.
George Romero if you are reading this...please just stop! Stop deliberately trying to put hidden meanings in your films. Okay we get it! It worked with Night and Dawn...but come on man, people just want to see a good living dead flick. When I think of Dawn, I don't think of consumerism. I think living dead, shopping mall, guns, bikers, and gore...cool. People aren't interested in your messages anymore. Oh and please tell me what the message was for Diary. Was it...hey there is a massive epidemic and national crisis...let's put videos on the internet..so people can know the truth!!??? COME ON MAN...SERIOUSLY??!!! I am telling the truth when I say I don't even want to see Survival.
