Toni Erdmann (2016)
Over entitled baby boomer ruins daughter's life
28 March 2017
I really don't know why this film is so highly reviewed, it left me enraged.

Granted, the actors, in particular Ingrid Bisu and Sandra Hüller performances were wonderful...but the story....

Basically a typical baby boomer: monied enough to do as he pleases with a seemingly endlessly supply of time can't handle his daughter's work ethic so he sets out to ruin her life. He's old, he knows better and she should live in the manner he dictates. Such an old person's view. Hey, I got free housing, great working conditions and a big fat pension, why can't everyone? He can't handle the fact she works hard or long, or that modern life is unpleasant and work is dominating (at the same time he seems happy enough to reap the benefits of this type of life for himself). I was surprised all the way through that he didn't suggest she settle down and become a mother, but then hey at the end he did, albeit obliquely.

So you have this guy acting so try hard wacky showing up his daughter...and what does his daughter do? Nothing. There's no way his daughter would put up with his behaviour. "Oh I've just handcuffed myself to you before you have an important meeting and ROFL I have lost the keys LOL" and his daughter just goes along with it and brings him to the meeting? I don't think so. If she loved her dad enough to do that, then the first bit of the film when she was so awkward around him wouldn't make any sense. I was waiting for her to boot him out the car, to act like she has acted in the rest of the film, but no he goes to the oil field and simpers around uselessly going on about not forgetting the humour. It left me so enraged that he could just wilfully impose his world view on her but because it was out of love and, hey, he cared about the little guy, the script let him get away with it all.

Watching this was a worse decision than IMDb binning off the forums.
