Upright (2019)
Brillant and honest journey of an odd-couple
I really liked Tim Minchin, and I follow him on Twitter, so I saw a lot of tweets praising Upright, but I didn't pay too much attention to it because the premise of the show didn't seduce me. One day I decided to give it a go, and, boy, those praises were so right. 8 episodes to go from low to high, finishing with a very touching and honest episode.
All the different troubles and issues the odd couple have along the way feels real, and not problems that are there to delay them to their destination. Every flows organically, and that includes the relationship between them. It doesn't feel rushed or pushed, it feels real and honest. The acting of both Tim and Milly is superv, and their chemistry is great. She is really good, Meg has sides to her personality that could be annoying, but Milly plays it in a way that you feel that she's like that because she has so much pain that humor and pushing Tim away are her tools to get through it.
I cannot recommend this show enough.
A Street Cat Named Bob (2016)
A nice and cute movie
"A street cat named Bob" is a nice movie. It delivers what you expect of it, that is, a story with some realism, good acting, a relative straightforward script, and a nice relationship between a guy and a cat.
The acting of Luke Treadaway is good and believable, it won't win an academy award, but you buy that he is a recovering drug addict and the relationship he develops with Bob the Cat.
Ruta Gedmintas plays an almost stereotypical hippie girl, but she comes off OK and Joanne Froggatt is OK as James' guardian angel.
So yes, this movie won't win any award, but it will make you spend a good time with a nice story.
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
It's good, but not that good
The movie is good, but is far from being a master peace. It is slow, but it never becomes dense, or tiresome. But I do feel, it could have been 30 minutes shorter without affecting the outcome. I like the photography, but didn't like the music score. I usually like Casey Affleck, and here he is good, but not Oscar good. Through out the movie he has the same "nothing face". I understand he has to transmit the emptiness in his soul, but it never got me. Even when they show you his flashbacks, it didn't strike me as 'oh, he was so happy and full of life, and now he is just void'. As to Lucas Hedges, I don't think he deserves the Oscar nomination, I've watch a lot of movies with better supporting performances (eg, Kevin Costner in Hidden Figures). On the other hand, I do think Michelle Williams deserves its nomination. I did see a change between his life prior to the faithful event, and after it.
Inception (2010)
Nolan, You've done it again!
I'm a huge Nolan fan. I've like all of his movies, in fact, I think most of them are over the top. Clearly Inception is no exception.
This movie is a great visual show. Its photography, in charge of Pfister, its magnificent, and the different scenarios where the action takes place are of a great visual impact.
The story is pretty crazy, and Nolan takes the first minutes to explain how this universe works. At first, I got uncomfortable with those rules, but a few more minutes more, I was totally into it.
The cast is totally awesome, and there's no one that seems to be out of place. The ,sadly unawarded, Di Caprio gives a great performance, and the young Gordon-Levitt show why he's want in every new movie.
Nolan's usual collaborator, Hans Zimmer, is in charge of the music, and fits perfectly the tension and suspense when the scene requires so.
The only thing left to say is: Thank you, Nolan!
