Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009)
Not half bad!
First off, I am a huge fan of the Shopaholic series. I remember picking it up at a Borders while I was still in high school and my friends making fun of me because the (original) cover was so frivolous. But before I knew it, a couple years later it was all the rage and it seemed like every girl in class had a copy.
I love the series, because it is a fun getaway and quick read with quirky, lovable characters. Because of that, I didn't expect the movie to be very good, especially judging from the trailer, the fact that they transplanted Becky Bloomwood to NYC as an American, and the casting of Luke Brandon (who, after watching the film, I still think is miscast). The Rotten Tomatoes reviews just confirmed my fears that Hollywood had yet again mangled a perfectly good story.
However, my sisters and mom also being fans of the series, we went to see the movie and surprise! It wasn't awful at all. The plot moved along quickly, and I really liked that the writer(s) took situations from each of the original 3 books instead of making their own absurd plot. Isla Fisher was a lovable Becky, which I wasn't expecting at all. I wish Suze and Tarquin had a bigger role, but they weren't completely useless in the movie as some have suggested.
Yes, the timing of the release is rather poor with the global economy in the state that it's in, but come on. People go to movies as a form of escapism and to enjoy themselves for two hours or so. People who really are suffering from the economic state probably aren't shelling out twelve bucks a person to go to the movies anyway.
All in all.. enjoyable way to spend your time. Just get lost in the crazy world of Becky Bloomwood!
Night Train (2009)
Surprisingly enjoyable..
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this movie because I'm generally not a fan of Leelee Sobieski's work, but I watched it anyway as a way to kill time.
I don't know if it's because I went into the movie with low expectations, but I actually enjoyed it. The acting was fine; I have definitely seen Danny Glover in better roles, but Sobieski actually wasn't terrible & I thought Steve Zahn did a great job. It was suspenseful and interesting with some nice plot twists. I didn't like the kind of supernatural twist the film took near the end, but it was a good fun movie to watch.
