The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Surprisingly Very Good
Seeing Ashton Kutcher, in role we are not used to seeing him in, I went in thinking that it may be very mainstream and very boring. Yet Kutcher puts on a performance worth watching. The special effects were great, and it's short running time had the movie end on a time where the audience wasn't left bored or anticipating.
I heard the script was up for option for almost 5 years, and was told it was too dark to make into a movie. This is what swayed my opinion before walking in.
I would say, one of the better films to come out in the past couple of months. If you haven't seen it, please check it out. You'll find this film surprisingly good, I promise it.
Hold Me While I'm Naked (1966)
Kuchar hits big
I would have to disagree, I don't believe it is like Stan Brakhage what so ever. The Kuchar Brothers had a great impact on cinema in the 1960's, and "HOLD ME WHILE I'M NAKED" was a great success in the avant-garde film department. The film is magnicicent in it's own sense. It has all of the elements which make a perfect movie. Cinematography is terrific, and the dialouge is great. What makes this film extra special is the fact that George Kuchar, went back over and recorded his voice, as everyone's. One of the greatest avant-garde filmmakers of our time, i would have to say, but the line between Brakhage is big enough to jump over. In my opinion, if yuo are an aspiring filmmaker, see this film. Don't just watch it once, but several times. It holds more than what is in the frame.
Dog Star Man: Part I (1962)
Brakhage is more than a filmmaker.
If anyone tells you that this movie is boring, you won't enjoy it, you don't get it, then this person doesn't know the first thing about film. For a film to be put in the National Congress Library, and claimed as "The most important film ever made", hands down, you must be missing something.
Dog Star Man, as a whole, is the most amazing experience you could ever sit through. If sitting through "Tears of the Sun" with Bruce Willis was "the best movie ever", then you have never traveled to the avant-garde world of cinema. I would have to say that you should look at "Dog Star Man" and then "Mothlight" if you need to see a good movie. The film itself holds a story in each frame. Seriously, all would love this film. If you have something negative againest this film, please take into consideration what it takes to put something like this together.
Light, picture, sounds. Brakhage is more than a filmmaker.

Irréversible (2002)
Perfection in Cinema
Irreversible is so far one of the best movies of the new century.
A Clockwork Orange type film, but something else. It runs backwards like Memento, but instead of running into the next scene, it stops.
The reason I drove more than 3-hours to see this movie, was because Newsweek called it "...the most walked out movie..." How could you not see it?
I wanted to see what the fuss was about, and if you have seen anything about this movie, they would most likely include telling you about the 9-minute long rape scene, or the gruesome beating with a fire extingusher (which honestly, I found to be worse than anything found in "Saving Private Ryan"). At the end of the film, when everything ties together in a nice little bow, and you forget about the rape scene, and the ending of the film spins, you sit in the theater in awe, and think to yourself, "this was worth the drive."
Not for children, but if you are a movie buff, and you are looking for an unforgettable movie, see this. It's a must.
Mothlight (1963)
...wow...
Finding Brakhage was an accident, but when I did stumble upon his world, I shut the door to the "Hollywood" world, and I sat down in the dark, to watch Brakhage. MOTHLIGHT was the first one I saw, and MOTHLIGHT was all I needed to see in the beginning before I wanted to get into experimental film. It traps you and doesn't let you go. Those who have seen it, know what I'm talking about. It's something amazing, and something everyone needs to experience at least once. **** four stars.
