Hogfather (2006)
The best fantasy mini-series I have seen so far.
I came to know about this title by chance, not being a fan of the Discworld.
I watched the two episodes back to back in a weekend, and was surprised by the 'completeness' of the story, which appeals to both children and adults on different levels of reading.
The characters are spot on and no un-necessary meddling has been done to render them more palatable to a larger audience.
The special effects are here to help the story, and do not substitute it.
I really enjoyed it, so much more than all big-budget productions without a soul.
Pride (2007)
An average sport flick.
In fact this movie isn't great. it isn't that bad either. certainly, it is not a 2.6 - 3.2 movie. more like a 6.5. I'd vote 10 just to bring up the average. But it would be silly. let's give it a 7.
Back to the movie, though, it's one of the few where swimming is featured, instead of the statutory American sports. A nice change. I didn't know of Jim Ellis, and don't know if its team really managed to win the city championship after just a few month's training. It looks unlikely to me.
Yet, the film is watchable, and it nicely shows that real people aren't (morally) black or white.
Batman Begins (2005)
I liked it
Batman Begins is a very good movie, which develop the character psychology remarkably well. it isn't shallow... it show how hard being batman actually is, not only the kick you get from beating up muggers, but also the renounces you have to make to protect your real identity. gadgetry is cool, and the Bat-Mobile is definitely uber-cool. Alfred is well interpreted and Freeman a nice addiction to the team, although it steal the scientific/investigative side of BatMan, who ends up like a rich guy expert in martial arts, and does not personally conduct his investigation... the villains are good, although when Liam Neeson is teaching Bruce, you expect in to use the FORCE sooner or later... the scarecrow is very well acted, as well... only gripe with the science of the movie, the microwave devices that boils only bulk water and not water in human beings... all in all, the movie deserves a 9. if only they had fixed those little things...
Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Not Bad
I'm just coming out of seeing the first series, and then that one, it isn't too bad, not at all. good graphics, very nice new storyline, I liked the characters although(SPOILER!!!)
- I find the humanoid cylons a faux pas. it's allrigth that they all look the same, but why in the hell they do not dress in a different way? however, I liked the idea of the humanoid in a limited number of models, as it reminded me of a PKDick novel. - I absolutely hate that to make things different, writers change small details which actually don't need to: why all doors have to be triangular/trapezoidal, and all piece of paper are octagonal. can't they see how impractical is all this (let alone to have printers in a 30th century century spaceship). that really let it down. (/SPOILER)
only minor gripes, though, it was good enough that I watched all of it at once and I'm really looking forward to see the new episodes in the next few days.
