O Homem do Futuro (2011)
One of Brazil's finest films!
When I say that this is one of Brazil's finest films, that is not to say that Hollywood makes great movies, because I think that Hollywood makes about 1/15 films that are worth watching.
That being said, this film is fantastic. It is a perfect balance of comedy and drama. A little heavier on the drama I would say.
The acting in it is amazing. Obviously who stands out in the film is the main actor Wagner Moura. He is amazing in just about everything he does. This character was great for him because it is very different than what I am used to seeing him in. Excellent acting!
The film takes you on a journey of many emotions. You will laugh and would have to be near heartless not to cry. The character is someone who a lot of people can relate to.
The story is fantastic. If you are like me, who has seen as lot of movies, than you will be skeptical to see another "time-travel" movie. I can tell you that this one is very different. It has a great moral to the story.
On another note, this film also has some pretty good special effects.
Go watch this movie!
Billi Pig (2012)
A couple laughs, but overall pretty terrible
I currently live in Brazil and always try to support the Brazilian cinema industry whenever I can. I always go to see Brazilian movies in the theater and I am happy to see the great increase in production quality of films in the past few years. There have been many movies that I have really enjoyed. This one, on the other hand, was a major deception.
The actors were all pretty decent for what they had to work with. What failed the most in the movies was the story. I think they were making the movie up as they went along. Very terrible story that made no sense.
None of the characters were very likable. They were all dishonest in their own way.
A lot of the story went unsolved. There were so many questions I still had about the story at the end of the movie.
Again, like I said, there were a couple funny scenes, thanks to the actors themselves. But overall, very terribly written.
If you are looking to give Brazilian cinema a chance, look elsewhere, because this film is definitely a step back in the progress they have made over the years.
50/50 (2011)
What Funny People Should Have Been.
I am giving this movie 8 out of 10 just because I am super picky. I loved this movie!! I was lucky to catch a pre screening of the movie and have been waiting for the final version of the movie for a while.
This movie is exactly what Funny People should have been. I found most of the situations in Funny People unrealistic and over the top and therefore had trouble relating to the story or the characters. As someone who has last several loved-ones to cancer, I know that seeing cancer in a "comedy" can be difficult for some. This movie was a perfect balance of comedy and drama. It brings a certain amount of peace with the idea of death (much like Darren Aronovsky's The Fountain).
The comedy is very "Seth Rogan", and not for all, but I thought it fit the film perfectly!!
