X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
I Give Up!!!
What can I say? Another disappointing Hollywood movie; this has only reinforced the fact that Hollywood is all about the big bucks & exploiting anything & everything that already has an established fan base; dumbing it down because they believe it makes the film more appealing to wider audience (In their mind this means more $). Whats next? 'The Crow' vs 'Watchmen', 'The Matrix' vs 'Star Wars' vs 'Star Trek' ? ? ?
I was looking forward to seeing 'Wolverine'. I'll admit I was pumped; I wanted to learn more about the character (what makes him tick?) & where he came from. What happened? I get a 2hour CGI/FX smörgåsbord, a predictable plot that goes nowhere, weaker than weak acting, a Deadpool fiasco & I learn't nothing that I didn't already know about Wolverine. What a disaster. The visuals are meant to be the icing on the cake; there is nothing holding this cake together.
Why couldn't I get a proper dark serious R rated 'Wolverine', low budget, gritty, sex & violence, real drama, real characters. True to the source material; Wolverine is a complex character & his origin isn't exactly 'Butterflies & Faires'.
Is Hollywood morbidly afraid to release a film that actually makes people think? A film that lets the audience use a bit of imagination to fill in the gaps & let them have their own interpretation, something that engages & stimulates them. Is it too much to ask for an interesting story & character development? All I know for sure is that I wont be seeing any new Marvel related films; I can make a better movie in my film class.
Haunted (2002)
Please Sir, I Want some More!?
Fantastic show; Why would anyone in their right mind cancel it after only 5 or 6 episodes? This show had a real character & feel to it; a unique dirty 'Se7en'-ish mysterious spooky vibe that was all its own. Franks journey & struggle to find out what happened to his son is something that everyone can relate to, in some form or another; thats what made the series so compelling.
The soundtrack by Mark Snow (X-Files) is awsum. The acting, direction, visuals, music, story are all top notch, I don't get it. Lets be honest Haunted is 1000 times better than all the #%*@! thats on TV: ten different versions of CSI and Law & Order, New Inventors, Lost (I was Lost), Dancing With the Stars, Stars on Ice (cough ahem), Better Homes & Gardens, Home & Away, Ghost Whisperer, Ugly Betty, Smallville, etc, etc. People want a good alternative to whats already on TV - not another watered-down X-Files clone.
- - - If any TV or Movie executives are reading this - - - Please understand you have to give a show a chance; 5 episodes isn't enough to reach a wide audience. (Even Seinfeld & The X-Files weren't hugely popular until their 3rd or 4th Season) Judging from what I've read on blogs, forums, etc this show had a small audience but very very loyal & enthusiastic. Please Please Please release the 11 episodes on DVD & you'll see what I'm talking about. Its not too late to make a 2nd Season.
Please, Please, Please consider this: Release the 11 episodes on DVD, bring back the original creators & cast (the guy who played Simon is perfect, sooo creepy); maybe do a film and/or a novel/graphic novel to kick-start more interest and create another Season (or three :)
This show has already shown more than enough potential, please don't leave it as another missed opportunity. - Chino White
The X Files: I Want to Believe (2008)
No X Factor
I'm a big X-Files fan but in all honesty this movie was a disappointment. Early on I knew this would be a 'stand-alone' film & there is nothing wrong with that (some of the best episodes are stand alone's). Chris Carter is a genius; he has created probably the best TV series ever but this movie has been left too long in development. Its been six years since the series & the way it was worked into the story is ridiculous.
The first film is fantastic but a lot of people who weren't familiar with series complained that it focused too much on the mythology. Its very unfair that they slammed Chris Carter because they didn't get it. The show had been around for 5 years when the first movie came out; people should have at least watched an episode or two before seeing the movie, if they didn't get it then too bad! Its no fault on the creators part.
So unfortunately Chris has gone for a very simple film, I feel its been dumbed down for the masses & its an insult to the X-Files fans. The intensity, excitement & humor of the series just isn't there any more. Its not even an X-Files Case! There is no chemistry between Mulder & Scully (the heart & soul of the series). The issue with Mulder's sister was semi-resolved in the series; it was Mulder's motivation but now it just doesn't have the same weight behind it (its been six years since the series ended) The whole film just felt dull & empty. There is very little that resembles the series apart from its title.
I always thought Scully was very sexy in the series but in this film she looked very tired & 'Plain Jane' (no offense to Gillian Anderson) but what happened? & where is her signature red hair? That just ruined it for me...
- - - I also found the animal cruelty/experimentation sickening & unnecessary. There really should be some sort of warning of this kind of content in a film. What does that have to do with telling a story? Its just sick! Some people make a huge fuss about sex and violence but what about animal cruelty? I don't get it - - -
Billy Conolly was the only good thing in this movie; he played a character you should hate yet he was interesting, slightly amusing and you feel sorry for him. A very hard role to pull off. Xzibit wasn't bad either, but his role was very one dimensional. (& yes he did audition for the part) He should consider a career as an actor.
If you haven't seen this movie stick to the series (its delicious) & stay away from this movie...
