Kaminey (2009)
Awefome!
Q: What goes through your mind when you go to the theater to watch a highly anticipated movie like 'Kaminey'? A: You want a crisp story, good direction, brilliant performances, nice songs... In other words you want a total paisa vasool show. And Kaminey delivers just that. In these times of utter crappy movies (like Kambakht Ishq) or total bore ones (like New York) or somewhat OK ones (like Love Aaj Kal), this movie comes like a breath of fresh air. And a lot of the credit goes to the director - Vishal Bharadwaj. So lets start with the story. This is probably Shahid's first movie where he has a double role. One as Charlie - a gangster who wants to be a bookie, lisps (pronounces S as F). The other brother, Guddu - an NGO worker who has big dreams, stammers and loves Sweety (played by the gorgeous Priyanka Chopra). Both got separated when their father committed suicide and went separate ways. Then during one of inter-gang-crossfires Charlie hits jackpot when he gets cocaine worth ten crores in the 'guitar' . Guddu gets Sweety pregnant and so has to marry her. But then he realizes that she is the sister of a top goon - Bhope bhau, who in turn wants to become a politician. What follows is a pacey story of how they get out of the mess and claim their lives. Not once will you yawn during the 2 hour show that the story is getting boring. Next about the direction. Typical Vishal Bhardwaj stuff but then you want the same style. Anyone who has seen Omkara would agree that his dark handling does wonders to the movie and never does it get dragged into the typical Ram Gopal Verma style of gangster movies. Now about the performances, Shahid does an commendable job. The biggest difficulty when playing double roles is to keep the two characters separate and Shahid does that part brilliantly. One person's stammering and the other's lisping are executed well. Priyanka does well in whatever small role she gets of Sweety. She has her typical bubbly and sometimes crying persona. Among the other actors, Amol Gupte as Bhope bhau was good too. But its mostly Shahid who dominates. The songs all get overshadowed by one top notch number - Dhan Te Nan and its melody gets repeated throughout the movie. Among the others Pehli Baar Mohabbat is melodious. But rest all just merge well with the movie. In all, a movie definitely worth watching once maybe twice (mostly twice). I bet you would feel satisfied and come out of the theater feeling good that you had a paisa vasool time.
Love Aaj Kal (2009)
A story which will touch your heart
There are very few Bollywood movies nowadays which have a story let alone a good one. So its a welcome break when you see a movie which has a well-defined and unique storyline. And a story close to my heart.
Let's start with the characters. Saif as Jai in his Hum-Tum-type character is good although at times you may feel he is blabbering too much. But then his character is supposed to be very talkative. I felt that in the break-up-in-café scene he went over the top but in the break-up-in-India scene where Meera(Deepika) comes after her marriage to meet him, he was outstanding. The way while blabbering her transforms from happy-to-sad and still at the end says 'I am fine' is a real good act.
Saif as Veer Singh in the 'Kal' part of the movie acts out the Sardar part pretty OK. That role wasn't too big but mostly to establish the co-relation but I felt that justice was done to it.
Deepika as Meera does well. I sincerely feel Deepika has shown more emotions with her face this time than in any previous movie she has done. Her role is well-sketched and has its moments. The scene after marriage when she realizes she needs to talk to Jai and get everything cleared and then she rushes out to meet up with him, she does really well.
The other important character is that of Rishi Kapoor as the old Veer Singh. Rishi Kapoor is a veteran and it is sure established in here. The way he narrates his story is typical Rishi Kapoor types but brings the essence of the difference of times very well.
Now about the story. Its essentially a comparison between love of today (Aaj) and yesterday (Kal). The story first establishes the difference between the times but then slowly it moves on to the similarity and how exactly the same thing happens with love of both the times, how the guy realizes that he has to win his love after she actually leaves him. It is well sketched but I felt that the climax could have been better. There could have been a twist at the end. Something that Imtiaz Ali had done very well in Jab We Met. And its because of this that I feel that it won't go on to be as big a winner as 'Jab We Met'.
The songs are beautiful. All of them. They go with the storyline and blend well, something which is amiss in many of the movies nowadays. I specially liked 'Dooriyan'.
All in all a movie truly worth watching and I am sure many of us from this generation will identify with.
How I Met Your Mother (2005)
Amazing show, great characters...
There have been very few shows which have got me hooked on totally and boy, does this one deserve it. A total laugh riot but it has its sentimental moments. And its this that makes it a great show.
Ted, Marshall, Barney, Lily and Robin all act out their roles with total justice. Ted's character as the guy looking for his The One has been sketched well and Josh Radnor does full justice to it.
Jason Segel as Marshall is amazing. He acts the doting husband's role perfectly. Alyson Hannigan as his loving wife is good too.
Cobie Smulders as Robin is seriously sexy. You just can't help but fall in love with her.
But the character that is loved by all is Barney. Neil Patrick Harris does total justice to his AWESOME character and of all the things that you would remember of this show, you would definitely remember his fundas like bro code and stuff. No wonder he has got so much acclaim for this role.
In all, a spectacular show. It will keep you riveted to the end of each episode and wanting to see the next one.
