Tiptoes (2002)
great potential gone wrong
Great cast with some fine moments and an interesting concept but somewhere near the middle of the movie, it all starts to unwind. Little things started to bug me, like the obviously fake baby. The dialogue was also extremely trite in some scenes. I guess mostly, Kate Beckinsale's character was the hardest one to believe. Wasn't she just TOO perfect? Her boyfriend won't tell her where he's going...she is very understanding. He gets annoyed with her for getting pregnant...oh well. Then she finds out he has hidden the fact that his whole family is comprised of dwarfs...she is a bit upset, but she gets over it pretty quickly. He can't seem accept the fact that they might have a "little person" for a baby...she is "bewildered" by his behavior.
*****SPOILER********* The funny thing is, I guessed that the plot was going to lead her to a romance with her boyfriend's dwarf brother. I just couldn't believe they'd actually go through with it. Very contrived. By the way, Gary Oldman played his part very well. The special effects were pretty embarrassing though.
I agree with some of the other reviewers here that the actor with the french accent was very charismatic. I would enjoy watching him perform again.
Watch this one only if you are up for something completely different and aren't too picky about plot, dialogue and special effects, not to mention directing, editing and logic!
Down with Love (2003)
This soufflé falls flat
I couldn't wait to rent this movie after having heard so many great things about it. It started out very well with great actors and a fabulous set design. I was swallowing the whole delightful concoction until somewhere near the end when it lost all flavour for me. My teenage daughter and I had the exact same reaction and looked at each other in disbelief.
***(This might be a SPOILER!)**** It was the part where Rene Zellweger (as Barbara Novak) starts to explain the whole plot that you thought you were watching was actually a huge set up. The explanation is supposed to be funny but it is just dumb! I'm sorry, but I was expecting better than that.
The first part of the movie I would rate very highly, but because of the painfully silly plot complications, it ultimately ends up being slightly less than mediocre.
Green Card (1990)
Very worthwhile romantic comedy
Not sure why, but Andie MacDowell is in two of my all-time favourite romantic comedies--this one and "Groundhog Day". That being said, the big scene stealer here is, of course the magnificent Gerard Depardieu. At first glance, this oafish character does not inspire female hearts to beat faster, but his soft-spoken charm and smoldering glances finally melt the heart of the fair maiden (and mine too!) Lots of genuinely funny scenes, mostly about misunderstandings between the sexes. I have watched this movie several times and I enjoy as much every time. I gave this a 7/10, but that was being very conservative.
Two Weeks Notice (2002)
Wonderful light romantic comedy
This is a great romantic comedy; so if you don't like that genre than don't bother with this one. It's two stars Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock are perfectly matched, and I breathlessly await another team effort from them. The plot is a no-brainer but the one-liners and pratfalls are truly top-notch. The characters are certainly not typical and these actors make them come to life. I kept thinking about this movie for days afterward, and I even may have to purchase it because I loved it so much! I was getting pretty tired of Hugh Grant after Two Weddings, etc. and a few others where he kept playing the same guy over and over. I did enjoy him in About a Boy, which was a much more realistic movie. But in this movie, he truly shines. His facial expressions and seemingly off-hand comments are so perfect!!! Sandra Bullock keeps getting better and better, especially her physical comedy. She was hysterical! So, its not Oscar material maybe but its as good as a warm bath and a box of chocolates! Mmmmm!
The Hours (2002)
This movie made me angry!
I have read quite a few of the user comments and realize we probably Don't need one more but... I was so upset by this movie that I was talking back at my TV as I watched it. (Not a common occurence, by the way!) I felt manipulated by the obvious symbolism and annoying scene changes. I felt insulted by the blatant references to this wonderful literary masterpiece (sarcasm here) which I have had the misfortune not to have read before. Therefore I must not be able to give an opinion of this movie as I would not know what I was talking about! Well I know a good movie when I watch one, and this was not it! I don't call it entertainment to be purposefully depressed for no real reason. I've noticed that most of the people who didn't like this movie happen to be men. I would like it known, that I am not, nor ever have been a man or even at all masculine by nature. I do have a lot of common sense, however and can not really relate to this repressed womanhood issue. I can't even begin to tell you how unenjoyable this experience was for me and just wish I could erase it from my memory bank.
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Best movie in ages
I give this movie top rating! It's a MUST SEE. If you didn't know that it was a true story you might think it was too far-fetched. That's what makes it so intriguing. Very good acting from Leonardo and Tom Hanks. My only complaint would be that the mother's character was a bit difficult for me to figure out. The look of the film is also just right. It stayed in my mind for days after and led me to do a bit of research on the real-life character. Apparently the movie stayed very close to the autobiography except for the father's character. His role was enlarged for the movie, perhaps to help explain Leonardo's character's motivations. Don't miss this one!
Man About the House (1973)
British humour at its best
I have such fond memories of watching this show. I would love to see it again. Yes, it was copied by Three's Company but the two shows diverged quite a bit after awhile. What I liked best about it was the sexual chemistry between Robin Tripp and Chrissy (the smart one). They were always bantering and teasing and arguing but you knew underneath there was something there. I was always waiting for the dumb blonde (Jo) to get out of the way so they could get more romantic. I wish I could remember how the series ended. I think they got together but maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part. I do remember the series Robin's Nest and it was kinda cute but there was no chemistry without Chrissy. In the American series, Chrissy was the dumb blonde, Janet the smart one but neither one had any real romantic relationship with John Ritter's character. I think people here have been too harsh about Ritter. He was all slapstick its true, but that was an art in itself! Different kind of humour. I prefer the British series as it was more subtle and clever, but I also enjoyed the American version. Although it really lasted at least two years too long!!
