The 5th Quarter (2010)
an accident leads to a really bad movie
Terribly written and directed. Terrible musical interludes in nearly every sequence. Preachy commercials about organ donation and the perils of reckless driving. It's too bad because the film could have been really great. There's a great cast. Films can have a faith-based message without being so heavy-handed, without all the bible thumping and scripture quoting.
The idea of a good family coping with the senseless death of a teen-aged son is really a good idea--and one that already won the Oscar for best picture (Ordinary People directed by Robert Redford).
This movie may have a slight life on the Netflix circuit--but it looks like it will lose about $5 million dollars. I've had a better film on my teeth.
Glee (2009)
The gayness of Glee
Ryan Murphy may be trying to push the gay envelope with Glee, but how far will Fox let him go? First of all, in reality Glee clubs, drama clubs, etc. are at least half gay. Is Kurt the only gay guy at that high school? Sam should be his new boyfriend, but have they wimped out on that storyline?
They certainly wimped out with Sam's costume in the Rocky Horror episode. If you are going to do Rocky Horror than do it right, do it some justice!! Stamos in fishnets for Frank...is a start, but that got yanked too?? Come on.
They push some boundaries but it isn't as charmingly gay and witty as say, old Will & Grace episodes. Kurt comes off rather sad and bitchy, and not very self assured or funny or witty. In faith his character was terrible. He pushed his friends away. Many gay people want to believe in God, we just get frustrated because God doesn't want to believe in us.
So while Glee is fun, and the song choices are very gay--much of it misses the mark.
