Cinderella Man (2005)
Whaddamovie!!
9/10 hands down, and I feel that I am being far too harsh. What else can you say. In the movie, Paul Giamatti's character says, 'Sometimes you see something in a fighter. You don't even know if it real, you're looking for it so bad'. The same can be said of this movie. You look and look through a hundred films and then suddenly you stumble upon one that makes you sway, gives you goosebumps, and 'you don't know if it's real', it's so good. It changes who you are.
The eternal struggle of the middle class and the dogged, silent determination to fight against unearthly odds is the substrate on which this boxing movie is built, and it has been executed to perfection. The movie is Russell Crowe all the way and in my personal opinion this performance of his is better than The Maximus Decimus Meridius. When he stands amidst the club members begging for alms with tears of shame in his eyes you really get to see what metal he is made of.
Renee Zellweger's short role is articulated with such finesse that you do not even realise that it has relatively so little screen time. She and Crowe share such a chemistry, even in their zero-glamour looks in zero-glamour surroundings.
Another standout performer is Paul Giamatti. The man always delivers but this one is out-of-the-blue extraordinary. The ramble he goes on after the first comeback fight is what I can watch all day long and not get bored. An Oscar was what was truly deserved, but I guess the judges didn't see the things I saw.
The final fight has been picturised as if it were a battle for life, not the title. The commentary and Round 11 makes your hair stand on end. You get so involved that you do not even realise that lasts for almost the entire last half-hour of the movie. Craig Bierko delivers a little gem as Max Baer. An unexpected yet pleasant surprise.
And finally, Ron Howard. Always been a fan of the man, but this movie points a finger to your eye and shows what a great director can achieve with a good script. He has even outdone himself in Cinderella Man and he has set the bar so high that none of his subsequent films have quite been upto the mark, in spite of them all being pretty good movies on their own.
It's not a movie, it's a legacy. It's a way of life.
It's just a rags to riches story, but it is the greatest one ever told.
Prometheus (2012)
Ridley Scott's masterfarce
What a heartbreak for a die-hard Ridley Scott fan. One can only wonder how the same director who made Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, A Good Year, Black Hawk Down would pick up a script as childish as this. It's a thriller that doesn't thrill and is totally devoid of sensibility. It should suffice to say that the most thrilling moments of the movie came halfway through it when the first deaths occur. The rest just petered out like damp fireworks.
Charlize Theron must surely be running out of money to be shooting stuff like this. Noomi Rapace tries but the script doesn't let her. Fassbender will do well to avoid such movies in the future.
We have come to expect a lot from Mr Scott in recent years and with this movie he has picked those expectations up and absolutely ripped them to pieces. I consider Alien to be an OK movie, yet considering that it was made in 1979 it was quite an achievement. And elements such as Ash the cold-blooded android were pleasantly amazing. But the man has not made a sci-fi flick in years and it shows. This is 2012 and just VFX and the label 'science-fiction' do not work anymore.
I would give it a 4/10 but the visuals make it a 5.
And whoever can explain to me the connection between the end of the first scene and the rest of the movie shall get a 100 bucks wired to his account. Or how the Space Jockey from Alien dies inside the human spacecraft in this movie. Or how a woman who has just had a major surgery, hits the ground running the very next moment, literally.
The Interpreter (2005)
Bravo!
Cannot believe how underrated this movie is. There has got to be something wrong with the people who have rated it. It is extremely tough to add a touch of heart to thriller flicks and this movie had achieved it to the full. What's not to praise? Kidman's a treat, to look at, and when she more than holds her own against Sean Penn. Sean Penn is, as ever, imperious with his subdued, steely performance that turns so profound in the end. Add to that a brilliant script and you have got a humdinger of a movie. Layer upon layer of suspense unpeeling every now and then, yet so personal that at times it can move you to the core. The dialogues are crisp at the beginning, and as the story gathers speed everything else becomes redundant. I give it an 8 because I can't give it a 9, but I really wish there were an 8.5 button for this one.
Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (2009)
One word : Extraordinary
Brilliant. Exceptional. Incredible. I'll run out of superlatives. Just how good can a simple story get. Hats off to Disney. Each character is so beautifully built. But more than that, the attention given to every detail is something to take a lesson from....dewdrops for spectacles, crow feather for the rudder! Wow! And of course, everybody loves Blaze!! Friendship is the message of course, but that's not all. This certainly is animation at it's zenith, Disney have done it, and that too without Pixar. Just go and watch this movie. The child in you might rejoice after a long, long time. The one in me surely did. Sweet, sweet, sweet movie, cuteness factor 100.
Sweet November (2001)
What??!! This should be 9/10!!
This has to be the most underrated movie on this site. I mean, guys who voted, were you in the right state of mind? Or is it the fact that the movie does not have your quintessential happy ending killed your mood? Take my advice guys, if you really know what movies should be like, watch this flick. The storyline is magnificent, albeit a tad old-fashioned, which is OK when you consider that it's a remake of a 1968 movie. The one to watch in this movie is Charlize Theron. The movie is all about her character, Sarah Deever, and she really lives up to it with acting that blows away all else, even Keanu Reeves' efforts. And who expected Jason Isaac to fit in a his role so well? All in all, this is a must-watch. The soundtracks are added bonus, with 'wherever you are' and 'only time' requiring special mention. Enjoy this one guys, and put in your votes. This one needs rescuing!!
Jhankaar Beats (2003)
Brilliance from unexpected corners
First of all, I have to say I am appalled at the incredibly low number of votes this flick has got. People would throng the theatres to watch worthless movies and skip the ones that don't have the big-namers. People who really know which movies to watch, this movie is a must-see. Pure, unadulterated fun, great music, craze for R.D. Burman, the movie has it all. Witty, witty dialogues and a sweet, inspiring storyline, and of course, stellar performances from Rahul Bose, Juhi Chawla and unexpectedly, Sanjay Suri. If there's anything lamentable in the movie it is, as expected, Riya Sen's acting. But the movie more than makes up for it. Good entertainment value and a little touch-the-heart in the end. Great job. Bollywood needs more stuff like this.
