Water (2005)
Love is reserved for the gorgeous?
The thing that bothered me about this movie was that the only two adults with a chance of breaking away from tradition and finding their own happiness were the only people in the movie who were gorgeous and very Western-looking. I mean, this pair makes Brangelina look like a couple of losers. The slightly older widow, no longer attractive, is apparently stuck with her life situation. The message seems to be that love only happens to supermodels.
I also didn't quite buy that this budding lawyer would want to marry an illiterate woman. Bad enough that she's a widow. Are we really supposed to accept that he's going to take a chance of cutting himself off from his upper-caste family because he fell in love at first sight with a pretty face? They've spent maybe an hour together?
Strike Me Pink (1936)
Great concluding chase
I haven't seen the whole movie, but just happened upon the last 15 or 20 minutes on TCM. Most of this time was filled by a chase scene that was actually kind of exciting (though it strained credulity that Our Hero wasn't killed about 8 times) and often funny. I was often thinking, "How did they do that?" I don't know about the rest of the film, but his part was definitely worth seeing.
An interesting aspect of changing technology was that the object of the chase was to get/keep possession of a phonograph record, presumably the only copy of an important recorded conversation. It wouldn't have happened in the digital age!
Drumline (2002)
No sex???
The person who said there is no sex in this movie must have been asleep when they showed the teams of dancing girls that front each of the bands. These young ladies wear skimpy two-piece outfits and heavy makeup, and they perform moves usually seen only in strip clubs. There's no way they could be more sexually explicit. I don't know why these colleges allow this to go on in groups that are representing their institutions. What kind of example does this set for the other students and the younger kids who idolize these bands? Are they supposed to be distracting the judges from the band's mistakes, or what? If these young women want to be part of the band, they should learn to play an instrument.
The movie was pretty enjoyable because of the music, but I do agree that the behavior of the lead character was poorly handled by the writers. Still, it was worth seeing.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Not a fan, but good action
I'm not a fantasy fan at all, so I just went to this because my husband wanted to see it. For about the first 45 minutes I was wishing for a book and flashlight so I wouldn't be completely wasting 3 hours of my life, but then I went out for popcorn and found that the last couple of hours went by quite quickly and enjoyably. My recommendation is to buy the popcorn first to keep occupied until things start to happen.
