They muddy the water to make it seem deep. - Friedrich Nietzsche
Yup that Nietzche quote pretty much sums it up. Endless sub plots, backstories, symbolism and pop-neurology to make the series seem high brow and complex. But there's no real emotional connection to any of the wafer thin characters or any meaningful emotional arc, so they simply muddy the waters and underestimate the audience's intelligence. It's easy to create a series of mysteries for the sake of confusion, as apposed to a mystery that culminates in something surprising and meaningful. Watching this series felt likeI was trying to complete a 3000 piece puzzle only to realize that by design (and pure laziness/hubris on the part of the makers) most of the pieces don't fit.

Ana de Armas exploited just like Marilyn
It saddens me to see that nothing has changed since the 1950s. Actresses are still being objectified and exploited for their sexuality. It pained me to watch Ana de Armas, a brilliant and beautiful actress, having to spend a huge portion of the film bare chested. How is this different from Marilyn's exploitation? Could the director honestly not tell the story of a woman's degradation by the film industry without degrading another woman? The director, Andre Dominik's unrelenting 'male gaze' made me cringe for Ana de Armas who had to be topless in front of a male director and cinematographer (and crew) while he portrays both Ana and Marilyn as nothing more than a beautiful piece of meat, neither actress having any agency. The irony is deeply troubling.
