Stupor Duck (1956)
Underrated Cartoon
Daffy Duck had many great cartoons, but some of the best ones were ones in which he played ridiculous parts like in "Robin Hood Daffy" or "Drip-Along Daffy", etc. However, almost all of those cartoons were directed by the late great Chuck Jones. This one, "Stupor Duck", was an exception as Bob McKimson directed it. Yet, it follows the same pattern as Daffy, despite his great power, is hopelessly overmatched as a super hero, especially against a non-existent villain that he overhears on a TV set. The animation on this cartoon is great for 1956 compared to other late WB cartoons. All in all, a Daffy cartoon that is must-see if you are a fan of the little black duck.
The Green Mile (1999)
An Outstanding Movie
I had rented this movie along with "The Shawshank Redemption" to watch over the Christmas holidays since I had never seen either one before. I watched "The Green Mile" first, and although I feel that "The Shawshank Redemption" is the greater movie, "The Green Mile" is an outstanding movie in its own right.
Frank Darabont shows why he is one of the best screenplay writers/directors with this movie. Despite being over 3 hours long, this was a movie that constantly kept your attention. Tom Hanks, as always, gives an outstanding performance, but the real star is Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey ("same name as the drink but spelt not the same"). David Morse, James Cromwell, Bonnie Hunt, Michael Jeter, Barry Pepper, Patricia Clarkson, and even Gary Sinise and William Sadler (who also with Jeffrey DeMunn appeared in Darabont's other classic film, "The Shawshank Redemption") in bit roles give memorable performances as does Doug Hutchison who plays the weasel, Percy.
Yes, it has more "fantasy" elements to it than "The Shawshank Redemption", but it is based on a Stephen King work. And as much as I loved Shawshank, "The Green Mile" is DEFINITELY the sadder movie. Tears came to my eyes several times in this movie, especially near the end.
If you love Darabont movies or Tom Hanks or just want to see an unbelievable performance by a great unknown actor in Michael Clarke Duncan, then you have to see "The Green Mile".
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The Greatest Movie That I Have Ever Seen
**SOME MINOR SPOILERS**
I was like some other people in that I have had never seen "The Shawshank Redemption" until 2 nights ago. Now, I just got done watching it for the 2nd straight night in a row. How anyone can say that this movie is overrated is beyond me; it is almost like they want to say that to be different!
The acting is outstanding by everyone involved including Robbins, Freeman, Sadler, Gunton, Brown, etc. Maybe the most chilling scene is when Tommy reveals to Red and Andy about how he had a cellmate at another prison reveal to him about that time "he killed that golf pro and that b*tch he was knocking up". There was something about that scene in how Darabont filmed it with the lighting and the laugh of that guy. It left an impression on me. It also was the turning point of the movie, although you could tell from the very beginning that Andy was not like any other convict.
One thing that sorta bothered me was near the end when it was revealed to the press about all the stuff going on at Shawshank, how it was so quick for Norton, Hadley, etc. to get theirs. I mean how did Andy really accomplish this without giving himself away and how did they not trace his whereabouts or question him? Oh well, I guess wondering about one thing like that is not too bad. Normally, there are like 5 things or more that I wonder about in every movie, but that is why it is a movie, I guess.
At any rate, don't let the above paragraph ruin it for you...I'm just a weirdo after all...:) The music, camera angles, lighting, acting, etc. are all outstanding.
This is a movie that needs to be watched over and over again and should be treasured. There is a reason for it being ranked #2 all-time, people. It's that good. If you wind up enjoying this movie, I recommend another Darabond movie based on a Stephen King work in "The Green Mile". It is a little-bit more fantasy than Shawshank but it is an outstanding movie.
