Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)
Greenwich village odyssey
This is an amazing funny slice of life story of a struggling artist navigating the music scene of 1961 New York.
Llewelyn appears to have fallen into an existential funk following the suicide of his singing partner who jumped off the George Washington bridge. A new found pal points out who jumps off the George Washington bridge? Because of course if you want to commit suicide properly, you have to jump off the Brooklyn bridge! This dry humour was a real feature of this movie- it just fit with the quirky movement of the film. The priceless look of realization when Llewelyn gazes at a movie poster for the 1960s flick "The incredible Journey" (about a group of pets that journey across the Canadian Wilderness to go back home). Was funny on so many levels!
The movie unfolds like a folk music song, with Llewelyn's disappointments, search for some kind of meaning in life and a somewhat transient / bohemian existence couch surfing with a variety of people.
The subtle humour of the props of that 1960s era, the staple corduroy jacket, the smoky music agents office with the secretary pounding out on smith corona typewriters, the corn cob characters performing folksy music at the Gaslight bar provides the backdrop for this slice of New York 1960s Greenwich Village music scene. It's great when a young Bob Dylan gets on stage at the end of the movie!
The soundtrack of the movie is beautiful and unique and I can't get the "Queen Jane" song out of my head! It's sung so beautifully!
If you want a great movie experience that is a great look at this amazing chapter in American folk music scene, see this movie!
My Soul to Take (2010)
soul - less Wes Craven flick
I was surprised how horribly bad this movie was, the only good thing about this was the core idea of it all..7 people get killed 16 years ago and their souls go into the bodies of 7 babies being born that day.
The dialogue was so god awful cheesy, and I have never cringed so much...the jock kid getting killed and the murder asks if he asks if he has anybody to say goodbye to and the kid says "my unborn child" this was so vile I cant see how anybody would find this funny.
It appears like they tried to make a feeble kind of freddie kruger but it doesn't even come close..more like a parody or hyperbole.
on the plus side, the character of bug, and fang put in a fairly good and believable performance. but I don't get their nick names though....? was i snoozing through that part?
Its really a shame that this fell apart so badly as the concept was quite good, but just ran out of juice. like they figured just because the name wes craven was attached to it, that would be good enough. it wasn't.
Vertigo (1958)
Hitchcock Blonde
First saw this film during a film course I took in college. It was with this movie that I really developed an appreciation for film noir, and the Hitchcock Blonde. The special effects were done very well, considering the time period. I loved the psychedelic , sprilling effects to show the main characters descent into madness. This effect was reflected in the camera angle going up the spirally church stairway as well.. Not very complicated as far as special effects go, yet had a lot of punch. The story line was amazing and believable , with the history of Madeline's grandmother, and the old fashioned oil painting of Carlotta with the antique necklace, that proves to be Madeline undoing was genius.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Had a Great Knight with this one..
Christian Bale's performance was excellent in this, it was strong and not a watered down version of the last few Batman movies. The viewer went deeper into the Bat's psyche to fully understand the character. Anne Hathaways Catwoman was a perfect foil to Bales' Batman. Hathaways characterization was also a strong deviation from Pfeifer's raw version of Catwoman. However I would have liked a little more history about the background of Catwoman's character..was she a ticked off sorority girl? an abused woman? more depth would have been appreciated to get the character more.. The character of the "rich socialite" was very interesting too, with the cool twist as to who she really was I found to be very film noir. Overall was happy with this movie and it kept my attention
Alter Egos (2012)
a great hero sandwich
I saw this quirky and fun film at Fantasia Film Festival, which played to a sold out audience.
I loved this fresh yet retro take on the heroe genre. It is a hero movie for this generation of Dr. Phil type of pop psychology/reality TV. The costumes and special effects had a retro feel to them, the sort of thing you saw on the Batman series that I see on retro stations.
The scene with the hero kvetching about his love life in the Hampton's café was hilarious. The way the plot dealt with the heros love life dilemma.. was such a fitting movie for our times..the costumes and dialogue were so unique and you never knew what would happen...unlike most hero films that rely so heavily on special effects, and shallow dialogue..this dialogue was so witty and funny..The funny special effects were made to obviously add to the campy feel of the movie, which the audience found hilarious.
highly recommend this as an alternative to the cookie cutter hero movies out there. I also really enjoyed the perky and Danny Elfman like soundtrack by Sean Lennon..would love to see this movie parlayed into a TV series.
If you are looking for a movie that is a fresh take on the whole super hero genre with a lot of original dialogue then this film is for you. i actually hope jordan galland makes a sequel to this!
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead (2009)
I was GRATEFUL to see The UNDEAD!
I saw this funny flick when director/singer Jordan Galland came to my province of Ontario, to partake in "Canada Music Week" as a movie premier and also as a panel speaker (because of his contributions to movie/sitcom soundtracks) I had seen the preview of this movie back in summer and had been happy it came to a city a few hours drive away.
I can say that this was unlike any movie I have seen! Lately I have found that a lot of movies lose my interest 30 minutes into the film, because they are so formulaic, but this movie kept my attention because I could not predict what would happen next, the special effects were pretty fresh and funny! and had a Monty Python (its a British comedy and not a snake like I first thought!) flavor to it. It was also reminiscent of "Young Frankenstein" The plot line had many twists to it as well, and ending was definitely not your typical "happy ending" formula, but sinister and funny! I enjoyed the chemistry between the actors, especially Devon Aoki and Jake Hoffman. I had been somewhat curious to see her since I saw the movie "Sin City", and "Frindly Fire", and was pretty impressed by her ability to do comedy! her timing was perfect.
I hope this turns into a sitcom spin-off, to fill the void left by "Angel" , " Buffy", and "Charmed"
I give this movie a 10 out of 10
