Man Vs. (2015)
Bored premise with decent execution. Ruined by ending.
I will admit, I somewhat enjoyed the first 3/4 of this movie. It has a slow build with a few creepy setups, in particular, a scene with a rabbit and a scene with a trap with a large rock meant to kill a human.
However, the final quarter of this movie completely ruins everything it had going for it. Once you see the monster, I PROMISE you will laugh out loud and instantly be taken out of the movie. Why not just go with practical effects?!
The best way I can compare this movie is a mix of Survivor Man, Predator, and The Blair Witch Project - mostly Predator but a much inferior version.
I feel bad for everyone who worked hard on this film (except the SFX department) because it really was 100% ruined by the CGI. If practical effects were used or they did a better job of keeping the "monster/attacker" a mystery, this could've easily been a 7/10.
Side note: I think it would've been interesting if they ditched the whole "alien/monster" direction and had one of his crew be the killer. Possibly his brother, as it was hinted at that he was fed up with the host's ego.
Cabin Fever (2016)
Nothing New. Very Average Horror Remake.
Let me start off by saying that I am a big fan of the original, Eli Roth directed Cabin Fever. A lot of people have already pointed out that this was a pointless remake, and I'm here to say... they're right. It's well known that this movie took the original movie's script and simply just changed the death scenes. With that said, most of the death scenes are still very similar to the original.
This remake has stripped all the campiness and goofiness that made the original so fun. It took likable characters (in my opinion), such as Winston and Bert, and changed their characteristics and/or cast worst actors to make them unlikeable and not nearly as memorable. Also, the characters in the remake are so much dumber than in the original, which again, adds to the viewer not having any sympathy for them. For example, when our main character is asked by his girlfriend to put her out of her misery, his gun is on safety (without him knowing it) so he decides to take a shovel and stab her in the jaw with it. She is still alive so he stares at her and decides "Ok. I'll take this gas tank, pour gas on her, and burn her alive." Yea, that's the best way to handle this situation with the girl you love. Shove a shovel in her face, and then burn her alive. How caring. What a guy. Rider Strong's character in the original was much more likable than this guy.
I decided to give this movie a 4/10 just because if someone goes into this movie somehow not knowing it was a remake, it would probably still come off as a half-decent but forgettable horror movie. However, to the majority of horror fans who do know this is a remake, stay away from it and watch a different movie because this adds nothing to the Cabin Fever franchise like the Evil Dead or Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes did.
