Chernobyl Diaries (2012)
Bored and let down
This review contains spoilers!! There was a choice between this film and the pact. On the recommendation of the cinema worker i chose this. I was sadly let down... The film was very slow to start off with, you spend the first hour thinking it may be about killer dogs, then when you realise its not it's over... There was no build up of suspense, no psychological stress to compensate for the lack of visual fear, no strong story line, no decent acting and no great ending to make it all worthwhile. Maybe because I was bought up in the era of the original Hills have eyes, I am quite biased to the genre and I feel that this film was a great disappointment and quite a crude entry to this side of cinema.
Ill Manors (2012)
Gentle but effective
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I originally had no interest at all in watching this and was quite peeved that I would have to join my friend, however, i sat in the cinema, glued to the screen and watching all the stories fall into place. It shows the good hearts of the bad and the ugly minds of the good looking. It is a film I would buy and keep, I probably would not watch it again as the suspense of the film is what made it so appealing, but I was eating a large amount of humble pie when I came out the movies that day. The acting was strong yet natural and the settings and scenes where identifiable. There was no strings left untied, there was no moments where I was bored. I think if you are expecting a reservoir dogs film with blood, gore, fast pace, flashy lines and catchy theme tune then you will be let down. This is a strong, independent film, that builds up slowly, has gritty violence and sex with a sad undertone... If this is what you like, i recommend it.
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)
I thought I was watching the borrowers
Well, I had massive hopes for this film, After watching pans labyrinth I was really expecting something visually stunning and with an exceptional soundtrack, however, I thought I was watching a teenage video of the borrowers... It was awful, with a week story line and ridiculous moments, The monsters , or mice were awful. Their design and their personality was bland and almost cartoon like. As for the plot it was empty, a house with demon mice... I came out the cinema feeling gutted. However, I didn't have to pay as I had a free pass, so not all was lost... On another note I would be interested to see the original and see whether it was any good.
Beyond Remedy (2009)
Not awful, but unfinished...
Well, after reading the reviews I was expecting some absolute god awful film, however, it was not entirely that bad... The storyline had the potential to be amazing however it was a little bland, the acting was not as bad as some films i have seen and the twist at the end had a little to be desired for but it was OK, SPOILER COMING... my one concern was what did the old man and the Chinese guy really have to do with it...? i'm not quite sure. maybe I missed something, anyway, if your having a rubbish day and you just want to sit on the sofa, eat rubbish, watch rubbish and drink rubbish, then maybe this is the film for you.
The Darkroom (2006)
very original
I really enjoyed this film, it kept me thinking and i thought the friendship between the man and boy was done really well, it could have been over played and misconstrued... but the innocence and genuine nature of the relationship was very clever. A lot of these films that involve flashbacks and dream scenes make no sense and try and show too much, however this film keep it interesting and help my interest till the end. SPOILER COMING: the beast and the dreams made the film quite edgy, and the twist i thought was going to be a sixth sense moment, but then it wasn't so I was pleasantly surprised. A good film and id quite happily buy it.
Lost Highway (1997)
are you ready?
How you feel about this film is based on the way you look at it... Its silent, steady and deep rooted start can be taken for a slow and boring start, if that's how you feel, you're not ready to watch and appreciate the beautiful cinematography of David Lynch. If you cannot get past the multi layered reality and the subconscious undertones of this film, you are not ready to get into the mind of David Lynch and if you are not ready to accept the end of a film as a simple, poetic - justification of a reign of events, as opposed to 'this is a film, its ended and its all laid out bare' then perhaps you should not watch another David Lynch film... BUT if you can sit, feel, wait patiently, understand and keep a little piece of the film you watch in your heart then embrace all of his work as you will not be let down.
Ghost Hunters (2004)
fantastic phantasm
I absolutely love TAPS, it's a house hold name in our home and we watch it all the time and appreciate their advice and 'debunking' as opposed to watching some of the rival shows that want to run around screaming and making something out of nothing, I am not particularly spiritual and more science minded, however they way this show produces its evidence makes me accept that there could be and probably things in life that we do not and cannot understand... The only negative side to their show is all the new fan dangled 3D commentaries and voice over's... Taps is what it is, real genuine and raw... now it feels more like little movies made in Hollywood studios, but I still watch it every day as because I enjoy it and I guess everything changes at some point.
Cradle of Fear (2001)
shockingly quite good!
I love low budget cheap horror, however it get tiresome when the storyline is the same... this was completely different. I had no idea what was going on from one moment to the next, it kept me guessing and was really really graphic, I loved it... SPOILER COMING: the scene in the sick rooms could have been more gruesome, could have chose to sever a genital or a head as opposed to what he did choose but this was saved by the fact that the rest of the film was that gory, that i am quite ashamed I wanted more. Never the less, the film was really fun to watch with the demonic faces, the crazy beast baby, and the ending.... I loved it loads! Even though I'm not particularly a cradle of filth music fan or a Goth, there is no reason why you would not enjoy it, especially if you like a little nonsensical violence and blood.
Penelope (2006)
Great film but a little rushed
I thought this film was lovely, light hearted yet with a strong message that i think should be drilled into children more. Love who you are... but, I think they could have spent a little more time developing the relationship between Penelope and johnny/max and Anni and the bar tender. There was a suggestion that the bar tender liked Annie but then at the end of the film it was just left. In both relationships They skimmed through a couple of meetings but the emotion and the connections could have been so powerful and intense.Other than that the film was a lot of fun, very relaxed, and easy to watch. And as always Christina Ricci delivers a charming performance.
